[Cytogenetic investigations of mice marrow cells after isolated chronic exposure to radiation and chemical factors, and combined sequential exposure to these factors].

The article presents data on chromosomal aberrations in bone marrow cells of mice following isolated exposure to gamma-radiation and chemical factor within the existing MPCs for piloted spacecraft, and also combined sequential exposure in the ranges predicted for interplanetary missions. In the event of chronic exposure the relative number of chromosomal aberrations goes up till reaching plateau and is governed strictly by the mathematical dependence on effective residual gamma-dose and effective damage of organism from inhaled chemical factor. Sequential exposure to the radiation and chemical

Autonomous Exploration of Small Bodies Toward Greater Autonomy for Deep Space Missions.

Autonomy is becoming increasingly important for the robotic exploration of unpredictable environments. One such example is the approach, proximity operation, and surface exploration of small bodies. In this article, we present an overview of an estimation framework to approach and land on small bodies as a key functional capability for an autonomous small-body explorer. We use a multi-phase perception/estimation pipeline with interconnected and overlapping measurements and algorithms to characterize and reach the body, from millions of kilometers down to its surface. We consider a notional spa

Resonant capture of Saturn's arcs.

Obtained images from the Cassini spacecraft have unveiled several small satellites in the vicinity of Mimas' orbit: Aegaeon, Methone and Anthe. Methone and Anthe are situated within arcs of material, while Aegaeon orbits within an arc near the inner edge of Saturn's G ring. The presence of these arcs and moons is consistent with their confinement by corotation eccentric resonance (CER) with Mimas. Aegaeon is captured in an inner 7 : 6 mean motion resonance with Mimas, while Methone and Anthe are, respectively, captured in outer 14 : 15 and 10 : 11 resonances with Mimas. Here, we estimate the p

[Doctor, may I travel in space? Aeromedical considerations regarding commercial suborbital space flights].

Within a few years, the first commercial operators will start flying passengers on suborbital flights to the verge of space. Medical data on the effects of space journeys on humans have mainly been provided by professional astronauts. There is very little research into the aeromedical consequences of suborbital flights for the health of untrained passengers. Low air pressure and oxygen tension can be compensated for by pressurising the spacecraft or pressure suit. Rapid changes in gravitational (G-)force pose ultimate challenges to cardiovascular adaptation mechanisms. Zero-gravity and G-force

[The Jupiter-2 slow-rotation system].

The experience of space missions shows that functional disorders in crewmembers on the type of space motion sickness (SMS) may develop on the initial stage of flight. Longer exposure in micro-g causes a wide range of debilitative changes in the vital body systems. Artificial gravity produced by spacecraft rotation might be a universal tool to counteract the impacts of prolonged microgravity on the human body. However, the significance of SMS does not become less high because of a new factor, i.e. the rotating environment. Research system Jupiter 2 is a stand-alone slow-rotating ground facility

A hydroponic system for microgravity plant experiments.

The construction of a permanently manned space station will provide the opportunity to grow plants for weeks or months in orbit for experiments or food production. With this opportunity comes the need for a method to provide plants with a continuous supply of water and nutrients in microgravity. The Capillary Effect Root Environment System (CERES) uses capillary forces to maintain control of circulating plant nutrient solution in the weightless environment of an orbiting spacecraft. The nutrient solution is maintained at a pressure slightly less than the ambient air pressure while it flows on

Dose simulation for the MATROSHKA-R experiment onboard the international space station using a high-fidelity model of the Zvezda module.

The MATROSHKA-R experiment conducted onboard the International Space Station provided invaluable data on depth-dose distributions for critical human organs exposed to the low Earth orbit (LEO) radiation environment. In this study, a high-fidelity computational model of a tissue-equivalent spherical phantom and a refined geometric representation of the Zvezda module were developed using the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit. In contrast to previous studies that relied on simplified cylindrical crew module models, our approach successfully and simultaneously reproduced the measured dose distributions i

Mapping infectious disease landscapes: unmanned aerial vehicles and epidemiology.

The potential applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or drones, have generated intense interest across many fields. UAVs offer the potential to collect detailed spatial information in real time at relatively low cost and are being used increasingly in conservation and ecological research. Within infectious disease epidemiology and public health research, UAVs can provide spatially and temporally accurate data critical to understanding the linkages between disease transmission and environmental factors. Using UAVs avoids many of the limitations associated with satellite data (e.g., lo

Prediction of LDEF exposure to the ionizing radiation environment.

Predictions of the LDEF mission's trapped proton and electron and galactic cosmic ray proton exposures have been made using the currently accepted models with improved resolution near mission end and better modeling of solar cycle effects. An extension of previous calculations, to provide a more definitive description of the LDEF exposure to ionizing radiation, is represented by trapped proton and electron flux as a function of mission time, presented considering altitude and solar activity variation during the mission and the change in galactic cosmic ray proton flux over the mission. Reentry and disintegration dynamics of space debris tracked using seismic data.

The risks posed by reentering space debris continue to grow as Earth's orbit becomes more crowded. Currently, responses to uncontrolled reentries are hampered by an inability to reliably track spacecraft once they are burning up within the atmosphere, meaning that debris fallout locations are poorly predicted. We have demonstrated a minimum-gradient fit seismic inversion methodology that allows in-atmosphere debris trajectory, speed, altitude, descent angle, size, and fragmentation pattern to be discerned relatively quickly. We tested this methodology on open-source data from the 2024 reentry

A comprehensive survey of space robotic manipulators for on-orbit servicing.

On-Orbit Servicing (OOS) robots are transforming space exploration by enabling vital maintenance and repair of spacecraft directly in space. However, achieving precise and safe manipulation in microgravity necessitates overcoming significant challenges. This survey delves into four crucial areas essential for successful OOS manipulation: object state estimation, motion planning, and feedback control. Techniques from traditional vision to advanced X-ray and neural network methods are explored for object state estimation. Strategies for fuel-optimized trajectories, docking maneuvers, and collisi

Localized aliphatic organic material on the surface of Ceres.

Organic compounds occur in some chondritic meteorites, and their signatures on solar system bodies have been sought for decades. Spectral signatures of organics have not been unambiguously identified on the surfaces of asteroids, whereas they have been detected on cometary nuclei. Data returned by the Visible and InfraRed Mapping Spectrometer on board the Dawn spacecraft show a clear detection of an organic absorption feature at 3.4 micrometers on dwarf planet Ceres. This signature is characteristic of aliphatic organic matter and is mainly localized on a broad region of ~1000 square kilometer

As one of the payloads on board the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) spacecraft, the ultraviolet imager (UVI) aims to capture N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) aurora continuously on a high-eccentricity orbit. The UVI instrument includes an intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) for far ultraviolet (FUV) wavelength. It comprises a sealed image intensifier, a relay lens system, a CCD, and a mechanical housing. ICCD's performance characteristics are evaluated before integrating with the optical system of the UVI, including the quantum efficiency, radiant gain, background c

Surface changes on comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko suggest a more active past.

The Rosetta spacecraft spent ~2 years orbiting comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, most of it at distances that allowed surface characterization and monitoring at submeter scales. From December 2014 to June 2016, numerous localized changes were observed, which we attribute to cometary-specific weathering, erosion, and transient events driven by exposure to sunlight and other processes. While the localized changes suggest compositional or physical heterogeneity, their scale has not resulted in substantial alterations to the comet's landscape. This suggests that most of the major landforms were cre

Effects of Low-Temperature Plasma-Sterilization on Mars Analog Soil Samples Mixed with Deinococcus radiodurans.

We used Ar plasma-sterilization at a temperature below 80 °C to examine its effects on the viability of microorganisms when intermixed with tested soil. Due to a relatively low temperature, this method is not thought to affect the properties of a soil, particularly its organic component, to a significant degree. The method has previously been shown to work well on spacecraft parts. The selected microorganism for this test was Deinococcus radiodurans R1, which is known for its remarkable resistance to radiation effects. Our results showed a reduction in microbial counts after applying a low tem

Perception of spatial orientation in microgravity.

Experiments during space and parabolic flights have shown that human spatial orientation in microgravity differs to a significant extent from its performance on earth. Due to the missing reference of gravitational force, unusual perceptual phenomena are observed, from inversion illusions to errors of perceived motion and position with respect to the spacecraft. This article gives an overview of results collected from space missions and parabolic flight campaigns, and proposes new lines of research about the perceptual phenomena of spatial orientation in microgravity. It is shown that most of t

ICESat-2 river surface slope (IRIS): A global reach-scale water surface slope dataset.

The global reach-scale "ICESat-2 River Surface Slope" (IRIS) dataset comprises average and extreme water surface slopes (WSS) derived from ICESat-2 observations between October 2018 and August 2022 as a supplement to 121,583 reaches from the "SWOT Mission River Database" (SWORD). To gain full advantage of ICESat-2's unique measurement geometry with six parallel lidar beams, the WSS is determined across pairs of beams or along individual beams, depending on the intersection angle of spacecraft orbit and river centerline. Combining both approaches maximizes spatial and temporal coverage. IRIS ca

Human-like acceleration and deceleration control of a robot astronaut floating in a space station.

The acceleration and deceleration (AD) motions are the basic motion modes of robot astronauts moving in a space station. Controlling the locomotion of the robot astronaut is very challenging due to the strong nonlinearity of its complex multi-body dynamics in a gravity-free environment. However, after training, humans can move well in space stations by pushing the bulkhead, and the motion mechanism of humans is a good reference for robot astronauts. The contribution of this study is modeling the human AD motion in a microgravity environment and proposing a human-like control method for robot a

The dark side of the black caiman: Shedding light on species dietary ecology and movement in Agami Pond, French Guiana.

The black caiman is one of the largest neotropical top predators, which means that it could play a structuring role within swamp ecosystems. However, because of the difficulties inherent to studying black caimans, data are sorely lacking on many aspects of their general biology, natural history, and ecology, especially in French Guiana. We conducted a detailed study of the Agami Pond black caiman population using a multidisciplinary approach. The aim was to better understand the species' dietary ecology and movements in the pond, and thus its functional role in pond system. We gathered natural

Estuarine crocodiles ride surface currents to facilitate long-distance travel.

1. The estuarine crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) is the world's largest living reptile. It predominately inhabits freshwater and estuarine habitats, but widespread geographic distribution throughout oceanic islands of the South-east Pacific suggests that individuals undertake sizeable ocean voyages. 2. Here we show that adult C. porosus adopt behavioural strategies to utilise surface water currents during long-distance travel, enabling them to move quickly and efficiently over considerable distances. 3. We used acoustic telemetry to monitor crocodile movement throughout 63 km of river, and foun
