Computational neural modeling of speech motor control in childhood apraxia of speech (CAS).

PURPOSE: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) has been associated with a wide variety of diagnostic descriptions and has been shown to involve different symptoms during successive stages of development. In the present study, the authors attempted to associate the symptoms of CAS in a particular developmental stage with particular information-processing deficits by using computational modeling with the Directions Into Velocities of Articulators (DIVA) model. The hypothesis was that the speech production system in CAS suffers from poor feed-forward control and, consequently, an increased reliance o

Reading speech from still and moving faces: the neural substrates of visible speech.

Speech is perceived both by ear and by eye. Unlike heard speech, some seen speech gestures can be captured in stilled image sequences. Previous studies have shown that in hearing people, natural time-varying silent seen speech can access the auditory cortex (left superior temporal regions). Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the present study explored the extent to which this circuitry was activated when seen speech was deprived of its time-varying characteristics. In the scanner, hearing participants were instructed to look for a prespecified visible speech target sequence ("

'Team Speech Sounds'-How Speech and Language Therapists Work With Parents of Young Children With Speech Sound Disorder: A Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is common amongst children on speech and language therapy caseloads, with most of these children being between 2 and 6 years old. SSD that persists into a child's school years can have a lasting impact on literacy development, socio-emotional outcomes and well-being. Effective intervention in the preschool years is therefore vital. Evidence shows speech and language therapists (SLT) believe working with parents is essential for a child's progress, and positive relationships between SLTs and parents facilitate engagement with home practice. However, littl

Speech feature profiles in Swedish 5-year-olds with speech sound disorder related to suspected childhood apraxia of speech or cleft palate.

Purpose: To study the occurrence of speech features commonly associated with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) in Swedish children with suspected CAS (sCAS) or Speech Sound Disorder (SSD) related to Cleft Palate and/or Lip (CP ± L).Method: Thirty-four children (4.10-5.11) with SSD related to sCAS (n = 15) or repaired CP ± L (n = 19) participated. Consensus judgement of presence/absence of CAS features in single words were based on a checklist with operationalised definitions. Speech sound production measures were based on semi-narrow phonetic transcription. Intra- and inter-transcriber agreeme

Systematic studies of modified vocalization: the effect of speech rate on speech production measures during metronome-paced speech in persons who stutter.

BACKGROUND: Metronome-paced speech results in the elimination, or substantial reduction, of stuttering moments. The cause of fluency during this fluency-inducing condition is unknown. Several investigations have reported changes in speech pattern characteristics from a control condition to a metronome-paced speech condition, but failure to control speech rate between conditions limits our ability to determine if the changes were necessary for fluency. AIMS: This study examined the effect of speech rate on several speech production variables during one-syllable-per-beat metronomic speech in or

Semantic Interference From First- and Second-Language Maskers During Speech-on-Speech Listening.

PURPOSE: Broad linguistic properties of masker speech (e.g., phonological and prosodic familiarity) have been shown to affect target speech transcription during speech-on-speech listening. However, it is unclear whether the semantic content of the masker impacts listening accuracy as well. If it does, it would suggest that the semantic content of the masker is co-activated with that of the target rather than being suppressed by a semantic filter mechanism. Also unclear is whether semantic interference from the masker, if found, is attenuated when the masker is in a second language (L2). These

Low-burden speech-based screening of depressive symptoms using ultra-short speech samples.

BACKGROUND: Speech holds promise for depressive symptom screening, but practical applications require clearer guidance on effective segmentation, optimal speech tasks, minimum duration, and feature-model matching. OBJECTIVE: To enable low-burden screening for depressive symptoms, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of short speech samples and systematically investigate how to identify the optimal practical combination of different speech tasks, time-window lengths, and the matching between features and models. METHODS: Using the HMU-DDAC-24 dataset of 143 participants aged 18-22 ye

Dancing towards speech improvement: Repurposing dance for motor speech deficits in neurodegenerative diseases.

Dance or rhythmic movement-based training has demonstrated significant efficacy in addressing a range of motor and cognitive deficits associated with neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Leveraging both human and non-human animal behavioral and neurobiological evidence, I hypothesize a possible untapped role of dance training in mitigating impairments in the motor control of speech, a complex sensorimotor behavior affected in these conditions. Here, this hypothesis is supported by an in-depth examination of motor speech deficits in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's d

Neural Speech Tracking Highlights the Importance of Visual Speech in Multi-speaker Situations.

Visual speech plays a powerful role in facilitating auditory speech processing and has been a publicly noticed topic with the wide usage of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a previous magnetoencephalography study, we showed that occluding the mouth area significantly impairs neural speech tracking. To rule out the possibility that this deterioration is because of degraded sound quality, in the present follow-up study, we presented participants with audiovisual (AV) and audio-only (A) speech. We further independently manipulated the trials by adding a face mask and a distractor speak

Implementing Speech Perception and Phonological Awareness Intervention for Children With Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: Children with speech sound disorders have more difficulties producing speech sounds accurately than same-age peers. In addition, they often have difficulties with speech perception, and weaker phonological awareness skills than their peers and are at risk for negative long-term academic and socio-emotional outcomes. In this tutorial, we describe ways in which clinicians can target speech perception and/or phonological awareness within the context of speech production practice. METHOD: First, we briefly describe the speech perception and phonological awareness skills of children with

Conversational speech of school-age children after syllable-timed speech treatment for stuttering.

Purpose: The purpose of this laboratory study was to investigate whether rhythmic speech was primarily responsible for stuttering reductions in four school-aged children after the instatement stage of the Westmead Program of syllable-timed speech (STS) intervention. The study was designed to inform further development of the program. Reduction in variability of vowel duration is a marker of STS, and it was predicted that this would be present in the children's conversational speech after Stage 1 of the program if they were using STS. To strengthen such a finding, it was also predicted that the

Contributions of local speech encoding and functional connectivity to audio-visual speech perception.

Seeing a speaker's face enhances speech intelligibility in adverse environments. We investigated the underlying network mechanisms by quantifying local speech representations and directed connectivity in MEG data obtained while human participants listened to speech of varying acoustic SNR and visual context. During high acoustic SNR speech encoding by temporally entrained brain activity was strong in temporal and inferior frontal cortex, while during low SNR strong entrainment emerged in premotor and superior frontal cortex. These changes in local encoding were accompanied by changes in direct

[Non-speech oral motor treatment efficacy for children with developmental speech sound disorders].

INTRODUCTION: In the treatment of speech disorders by means of speech therapy two antagonistic methodological approaches are applied: non-verbal ones, based on oral motor exercises (OME), and verbal ones, which are based on speech processing tasks with syllables, phonemes and words. In Spain, OME programmes are called 'programas de praxias', and are widely used and valued by speech therapists. AIM: To review the studies conducted on the effectiveness of OME-based treatments applied to children with speech disorders and the theoretical arguments that could justify, or not, their usefulness. Outcome measurements after oral cancer treatment: speech and speech-related aspects--an overview.

INTRODUCTION: Oral cancer and its surgical treatment impair speech quality by an alteration of the vocal tract. Local size and stage of the tumour as well as surgical and adjuvant treatment modalities have an impact on the functional outcome of patients' speech rehabilitation. It was the aim of this overview to specifiy speech and speech-related aspects as well as to delineate measurement methods of speech outcome in patients with oral cancer by a review of the literature. METHODS: The review is based on a Medline Search on "speech", "cancer", "oral cancer", "malignoma mouth", "intelligibilit

Speech motor correlates of treatment-related changes in stuttering severity and speech naturalness.

Participants of stuttering treatment programs provide an opportunity to evaluate persons who stutter as they demonstrate varying levels of fluency. Identifying physiologic correlates of altered fluency levels may lead to insights about mechanisms of speech disfluency. This study examined respiratory, orofacial kinematic and acoustic measures in 35 persons who stutter prior to and as they were completing a 1-month intensive stuttering treatment program. Participants showed a marked reduction in stuttering severity as they completed the treatment program. Coincident with reduced stuttering sever

Diagnostic Assessment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech Using Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) Methods.

We report findings from two feasibility studies using automatic speech recognition (ASR) methods in childhood speech sound disorders. The studies evaluated and implemented the automation of two recently proposed diagnostic markers for suspected Apraxia of Speech (AOS) termed the Lexical Stress Ratio (LSR) and the Coefficient of Variation Ratio (CVR). The LSR is a weighted composite of amplitude area, frequency area , and duration in the stressed compared to the unstressed vowel as obtained from a speaker's productions of eight trochaic word forms. Composite weightings for the three stress para

[Speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders from the psycholinguistic paradigm of speech processing].

The aim of this study is to present a survey of speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders (PD). We will examine the concepts of normal phonological development and those involved in PD in order to understand how they have been dealt with, historically, in speech therapy intervention. Lastly, we will describe how evaluation and intervention are carried out from the speech processing paradigm. Phonetic phonological skills allow people to decode the phonic strings they hear so as to be able to gain access to their phonological form and meaning. These abilities also enable them to enco
