Rating scales as predictors of speech perception in paediatric cochlear implant users.

PURPOSE: The relationship between parent and clinical supervisor ratings on the Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) and Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (MAIS) with directly measured speech perception abilities in children at six months and one year after cochlear implantation is not yet established. METHOD: Fifty-two children with cochlear implants aged 3-6 years were evaluated, with 27 children tested at six months post-implantation and 25 children at one-year post-implantation. The CAP and MAIS rating scales were administered by a clinical supervisor and one parent of each child.

[Speech perception in modulated noise assessed in bimodal CI users-German version].

BACKGROUND: Although good speech perception in quiet is achievable with cochlear implants (CIs), speech perception in noise is severely impaired compared to normal hearing (NH). In the case of a bimodal CI fitting with a hearing aid (HA) in the opposite ear, the amount of residual acoustic hearing influences speech perception in noise. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to investigate speech perception in noise in a group of bimodal CI users and compare the results to age-matched HA users and people without subjective hearing loss, as well as with a young NH group. Long-term speech perception performance in prelingually deafened adult cochlear implant recipients.

To investigate the postoperative long-term outcomes after an average of 9.2 years following cochlear implantation (CI) in prelingually deafened adults, along with preimplantation factors predicting postoperative outcomes. Twenty-six prelingually deafened adults who underwent CI at >18 years were compared with those who had undergone CI in childhood (<9 years) and were >10 years old. Outcome measures includedhearing thresholds, preoperative and postoperative aided hearing level (HL), speech discrimination score (SDS), and Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) scores. Correlation analyses wer

Lexical Influences on Categorical Speech Perception Are Driven by a Temporoparietal Circuit.

Categorical judgments of otherwise identical phonemes are biased toward hearing words (i.e., "Ganong effect") suggesting lexical context influences perception of even basic speech primitives. Lexical biasing could manifest via late stage postperceptual mechanisms related to decision or, alternatively, top-down linguistic inference that acts on early perceptual coding. Here, we exploited the temporal sensitivity of EEG to resolve the spatiotemporal dynamics of these context-related influences on speech categorization. Listeners rapidly classified sounds from a /gɪ/-/kɪ/ gradient presented in op

Does Auditory Environment Predict Speech Perception Outcomes in Elderly Cochlear Implant Patients?

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation (CI) is a reliable and safe means by which sensorineural hearing loss can be ameliorated in the elderly population. However, a high degree of variation exists in postimplantation hearing outcomes for which some modifiable factors of the daily natural auditory environment may be contributory. In this study, we analyze the relationship between cochlear implant patient age, natural auditory environment, and postimplantation speech perception among older adults. METHODS: Data log from automatic environment classification enabled sound processors of postlinguall

Extended high frequency hearing and speech perception implications in adults and children.

Extended high frequencies (EHF), above 8 kHz, represent a region of the human hearing spectrum that is generally ignored by clinicians and researchers alike. This article is a compilation of contributions that, together, make the case for an essential role of EHF in both normal hearing and auditory dysfunction. We start with the fundamentals of biological and acoustic determinism - humans have EHF hearing for a purpose, for example, the detection of prey, predators, and mates. EHF hearing may also provide a boost to speech perception in challenging conditions and its loss, conversely, might he

Auditory brainstem implants in neurofibromatosis Type 2: is open speech perception feasible?

OBJECT: Patients with bilateral auditory nerve destruction may perceive some auditory input with auditory brainstem implants (ABIs). Despite technological developments and trials in new stimulation sites, hearing is very variable and of limited quality. The goal of this study was to identify advantageous and critical factors that influence the quality of auditory function, especially speech perception. METHODS: The authors conducted a prospective study on ABI operations performed with the aid of multimodality neuromonitoring between 2005 and 2009 in 18 patients with neurofibromatosis Type 2.

Severity of hyperacusis predicts individual differences in speech perception in Williams Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Williams Syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic origin, characterised by relative proficiency in language in the face of serious impairment in several other domains. Individuals with WS display an unusual sensitivity to noise, known as hyperacusis. METHODS: In this study, we examined the extent to which hyperacusis interferes with the perception of speech in children and adults with WS. Participants were required to discriminate words which differed in one consonant of a cluster when these contrasts were embedded in a background of noise. RESULTS: Although the

Perception of basic emotions from speech prosody in adolescents with Asperger's syndrome.

Asperger's syndrome (AS) belongs to the group of autism spectrum disorders and is characterized by deficits in social interaction, as manifested e.g. by the lack of social or emotional reciprocity. The disturbance causes clinically significant impairment in social interaction. Abnormal prosody has been frequently identified as a core feature of AS. There are virtually no studies on recognition of basic emotions from speech. This study focuses on how adolescents with AS (n=12) and their typically developed controls (n=15) recognize the basic emotions happy, sad, angry, and 'neutral' from speech

Cochlear implantation outcome in prelingually deafened young adults. A speech perception study.

The outcome of cochlear implantation in patients with deafness of prelingual onset is largely unpredictable due to high individual variability. This study evaluated speech perception performances in a group of 18 prelingually deafened subjects (aged 13-30 years) which was homogeneous with respect to duration of deafness, hearing aid use before cochlear implantation, mode of communication and administration of auditory-oral speech therapy. Word discrimination length, word and sentence identification, phoneme identification and word and sentence recognition were tested before cochlear implantati

Gaze behaviour in audiovisual speech perception: asymmetrical distribution of face-directed fixations.

Speech perception under natural conditions entails integration of auditory and visual information. Understanding how visual and auditory speech information are integrated requires detailed descriptions of the nature and processing of visual speech information. To understand better the process of gathering visual information, we studied the distribution of face-directed fixations of humans performing an audiovisual speech perception task to characterise the degree of asymmetrical viewing and its relationship to speech intelligibility. Participants showed stronger gaze fixation asymmetries while

Speech perception skills of deaf infants following cochlear implantation: a first report.

OBJECTIVE: We adapted a behavioral procedure that has been used extensively with normal-hearing (NH) infants, the visual habituation (VH) procedure, to assess deaf infants' discrimination and attention to speech. METHODS: Twenty-four NH 6-month-olds, 24 NH 9-month-olds, and 16 deaf infants at various ages before and following cochlear implantation (CI) were tested in a sound booth on their caregiver's lap in front of a TV monitor. During the habituation phase, each infant was presented with a repeating speech sound (e.g. 'hop hop hop') paired with a visual display of a checkerboard pattern on

Acoustic analysis and perception of vowels in children's and teenagers' stuttered speech.

The syllable repetitions of 24 child and eight teenage stutterers were investigated to assess whether the vowels neutralize and, if so, what causes this. In both groups of speakers, the vowel in CV syllable repetitions and the following fluent vowel were excised from conversational speech samples. Acoustic analyses showed the formant frequencies of vowels in syllable repetitions to be appropriate for the intended vowel and the duration of the dysfluent vowels to be shorter than those of the fluent vowels for both groups of speakers. The intensity of the fluent vowels was greater than that of t

Effects of recurrent otitis media in infancy on auditory perception and speech.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent otitis media is commonly encountered in children before 3 years of age. Conductive hearing loss up to 40 dB is frequently associated with suppurative otitis media. Good hearing is believed to be critical to the development of normal language. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of recurrent otitis media on auditory perception and speech. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The experimental group consisted of 33 children with a history of at least three episodes of acute otitis media before 2 years of age. A control group of 29 children experienced one or fewer episodes

Relation between frequency selectivity and speech perception following glycerol-induced cochlear changes.

Changes in auditory threshold, psychophysical tuning curves, and speech perception (in both quiet and noise) were monitored over a 3-hr period following the ingestion of glycerol. All listeners had sensorineural hearing loss secondary to Menière's disease. Findings were characterized by large intersubject variability and in general did not show a clear relation between changes in threshold, frequency resolution, and speech perception.

Speech and language therapists' perceptions of corporate practice in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Corporate speech and language therapy (CSALT) is an emerging field that extends the role of speech and language therapists (SALTs) into corporate environments, enhancing workplace communication and interpersonal skills. While internationally recognised, CSALT remains underexplored in South Africa, where linguistic and cultural diversity present challenges and opportunities for its integration. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore South African SALTs' perceptions of CSALT. METHOD: A qualitative research approach was employed, grounded in a constructivist paradigm. Semi-structur

A systematic review of the voice-tagging hypothesis of speech-in-noise perception.

The voice-tagging hypothesis claims that individuals who better represent pitch information in a speaker's voice, as measured with the frequency following response (FFR), will be better at speech-in-noise perception. The hypothesis has been provided to explain how music training might improve speech-in-noise perception. This paper reviews studies that are relevant to the voice-tagging hypothesis, including studies on musicians and nonmusicians. Most studies on musicians show greater f0 amplitude compared to controls. Most studies on nonmusicians do not show group differences in f0 amplitude. A

On the nature of the speech perception deficits in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Previous studies have claimed to show deficits in the perception of speech sounds in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The aim of the current study was to clarify the nature of such deficits. Children with ASD might only exhibit a lesser amount of precision in the perception of phoneme categories (CPR deficit). However, these children might further present an allophonic mode of speech perception, similar to the one evidenced in dyslexia, characterised by enhanced discrimination of acoustic differences within phoneme categories. Allophonic perception usually gives rise to a categorical perceptio
