OBJECTIVE: Transcutaneous devices have a disadvantage, the dampening effect by soft tissue between the bone and devices. We investigated hearing outcomes with percutaneous and transcutaneous devices using test-bands in an induced unilateral conductive hearing loss.
DESIGN: Comparison of hearing outcomes of two devices in the same individuals.
STUDY SAMPLE: The right ear was plugged in 30 subjects and a test-band with devices (Cochlear™ Baha® BP110 Power and Sophono® Alpha-2 MPO™) was applied on the right mastoid tip with the left ear masked. Sound-field thresholds, speech recognition thresho

Electrical stimulation by cochlear implant (CI) has been proven to be a viable treatment option for tinnitus in many recent studies. In addition, intracochlear electrical stimulation independent of an acoustic input appears to suppress tinnitus, at least in the short term. We conducted a case study to investigate the long-term effects of both standard CI and intracochlear electrical stimulation independent of an acoustic input on tinnitus in a patient with single-sided deafness and tinnitus. We found no negative effects of intracochlear electrical stimulation independent of an acoustic input o

Tinnitus can increase stress and anxiety and reduce quality of life. Compared to listeners with normal hearing and no tinnitus, listeners with tinnitus (with or without hearing loss) often have greater difficulty segregating competing speech. Previous studies have investigated neural correlates of tinnitus using the P3 component of event-related potentials (ERPs). Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) and ERPs were measured in 29 listeners with tinnitus and 25 listeners without tinnitus; all were clinically normal hearing, with pure-tone average (PTA) thresholds <25 dB HL across 500, 1000, 2000,

The ability to understand speech in a multi-source environment containing informational masking may depend on the perceptual arrangement of signal and masker objects in space. In normal-hearing listeners, Arbogast et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 112, 2086-2098 (2002)] found an 18-dB spatial release from a primarily informational masker, compared to 7 dB for a primarily energetic masker. This article extends the earlier work to include the study of listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. Listeners performed closed-set speech recognition in two spatial conditions: 0 degrees and 90 degrees separat

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of hearing loss (HL) on children's performance for an auditory task under demanding listening conditions and to determine the effect of digital noise reduction (DNR) on that performance.
METHOD: Fifty children with normal hearing (NH) and 30 children with HL (8-12 years of age) categorized words in the presence of auditory or visual competitors, or both. Stimuli were presented at 50 dB SPL at a 0-dB signal-to-noise ratio. Children with HL were fitted with behind-the-ear hearing aids that had DNR technology. When DNR was activated, output decreased 4 dB, and si

BACKGROUND: Selective mutism is a psychiatric disorder of childhood characterized by consistent inability to speak in specific situations despite the ability to speak normally in others. The objective of this study was to test whether reduced auditory efferent activity, which may have direct bearings on speaking behavior, is compromised in selectively mute children.
METHODS: Participants were 16 children with selective mutism and 16 normally developing control children matched for age and gender. All children were tested for pure-tone audiometry, speech reception thresholds, speech discrimina

UNLABELLED: ObjectivesTo evaluate the effects of cochlear implantation on speech recognition in noise, sound localization, QoL, and tinnitus in adults with SSD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study with prospective follow-up included 12 adults with SSD who underwent cochlear implantation between 2015 and 2024 at a tertiary referral center. Assessments included the Danish Sentence Test (DAST), sound localization testing, and patient-reported outcome measures. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs), localization accuracy (RMSE), QoL (NCIQ), and tinnitus burden (THI) were evaluated.

Background: When speaking while wearing a face mask, sound transmission is attenuated, and visual cues are lost due to the covered facial movements of the speaker. In this study, we investigated the extent to which different face masks alter speech intelligibility in individuals with different degrees of hearing impairment. Methods: A total of fifty participants were divided into four hearing status groups according to the degree of hearing loss: normal levels (16), mild (13), moderate (11), and severe (10). A modified version of the Audiovisual German Matrix Sentence Test (AV-OLSA) was used t

Hearing is of utmost importance for normal speech and social development. Even children who have mild or unilateral permanent hearing loss may experience difficulties with understanding speech, as well as problems with educational and psycho-social development. The increasing advantages of middle-ear implant technologies are opening new perspectives for restoring hearing. Active middle-ear implants can be used in children and adolescents with hearing loss. In addition to the well-documented results for improving speech intelligibility and quality of hearing in sensorineural hearing loss active

OBJECTIVES: This experiment was designed to estimate effects of cochlear nonlinearities on tonal and speech masking for individuals with normal hearing who have a range of quiet thresholds. Physiological and psychophysical evidence indicates that for signals close to the characteristic frequency (CF) of a place on the basilar membrane, the normal growth of response of the basilar membrane is linear at lower stimulus levels and compressed at medium to higher stimulus levels. In contrast, at moderate to high CFs, the basilar membrane responds more linearly to stimuli at frequencies well below th

OBJECTIVE: To define the presentation and outcome of cochlear implantation in a patient with profound sensorineural hearing loss due to superficial siderosis.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
RESULTS: Postimplantation speech reception threshold was 34 dB, and hearing in noise testing sentences were 71% demonstrating a successful outcome. These results have been maintained for 5 years after implantation.
CONCLUSION: Cochlear implantation is a potentially successful rehabilitation option for certain patients with profound sensorineural hearing loss due to superficial siderosis.

Tinnitus has been linked to noise exposure, a common form of which is listening to music as a leisure activity. The relationship between tinnitus and type and duration of music exposure is not well understood. We conducted an internet-based population study that asked participants questions about lifetime music exposure and hearing, and included a hearing test involving speech intelligibility in noise, the High Frequency Digit Triplets Test. 4950 people aged 17-75 years completed all questions and the hearing test. Results were analyzed using multinomial regression models. High exposure to lei

In assessing children with suspected hearing loss, audiologists are faced with the challenge of attempting to describe auditory function in a population that presents with a wide range developmental levels and abilities. Fortunately, there are a number of behavioral and physiologic tools available for the evaluation of auditory sensitivity and system integrity in children of all ages and developmental abilities. As powerful as many of these tools may be, however, it is important that the diagnosis of hearing loss be based on the outcome of independent measures of auditory function, which serve

The headbands, the testbands and the softbands are applied for coupling of the sound processors of the bone-anchored devices to the patient's head before the titanium fixture/abutment can be implanted. The bands are used for acute and/or prolonged testing of the bone-anchored devices, and are able to approximate the results of postoperative amplification. Yet, whatever the type of the band coupling, the transducers interface with the bone through a layer of skin and subcutaneous tissue that damp the transmission and decrease effective amplification. Therefore, the final hearing result with the

Cochlear implant (CI) surgery is the standard of care for postlingual deafness in adults. A hearing aid (HA) for the non-implanted ear is normally used if residual hearing is available. There is limited data on bimodal stimulation in elderly patients. We compare the outcome of bimodal stimulation and analyzed the correlation of bimodal benefit and residual hearing in elderly patients. 22 patients≥70 years were implanted with a single-sided CI from 2002 till 2014. 17 patients use a HA on the non-implanted ear (bimodal). In a retrospective chart review we analyzed the audiological benefit (pure
