Virtual screening and in vitro assay of potential drug like inhibitors from spices against glutathione-S-transferase of filarial nematodes.

Glutathione-S-transferase(s) (GST) enzyme from Brugia malayi has been exploited as a target in lymphatic filariasis therapeutics. An active GST is a homodimer of a 208 residue long monomer consisting of two domains, a smaller α/β domain and a larger α domain. The components of the glutathione (GSH) system, mainly GST enzymes, are critical antioxidant and detoxification system responsible for the long-term existence of filarial worms in mammalian host; hence they are major chemotherapeutic targets in filarial species. In the present study, 58 phytochemicals from 10 plants, predicted and reporte

Adverse effects after the use of JWH-210 - a case series from the EU Spice II plus project.

Since 2009, more than 140 different synthetic cannabinoids (SC) have been identified in herbal mixtures consumed as recreational drugs. Knowledge of the acute toxicity of each individual compound remains sparse. Here we present a retrospective observational case series of patients presenting to emergency departments with analytically confirmed intake of JWH-210 as the only SC detected in serum samples. Cases were selected from a poison centre database from March 2011 to June 2014. In total, 22 patients were included (aged 12-25 years, median 17.5; 18 males 4 female). JWH-210 was identified in

SPICE-GRADE: simultaneous processing of indirect causal evidence in complex pathways using GRADE - an exploratory case study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Genetic mutations often result in antimicrobial resistance. Early identification of emerging resistance due to genetic mutations often relies on multiple coexisting pathways of indirect evidence. The GRADE approach, widely used to rate certainty in treatment comparisons, offers little guidance to address such situations. Motivated by the possibility of emerging resistance to malaria, we provide an example of how GRADE guidance might be adapted to address multiple pathways of indirect evidence, an approach we term SPICE-GRADE. We developed and here illustrate a struct

Occurrence of ESBL-producing avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) isolates in spiced chicken meat in Goias, Brazil.

Some extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli isolates (ExPEC), obtained from humans and chickens avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC), share similar virulence genes. Thus, products of avian origin can be a source of human infection. Moreover, these APEC isolates are resistant to antimicrobials and can spread in the environment through the chicken feces. Although the development of multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms in poultry is on the rise, healthcare entities have raised concerns since MDRs can horizontally transfer resistance genes to other microorganisms and complicate the management

More spice, less salt: How capsaicin affects liking for and perceived saltiness of foods in people with smell loss.

People who lose their sense of smell self-report consuming more salt to compensate for a lack of flavor and enhance eating enjoyment. However, this may contribute to excess sodium intake. Capsaicin may help increase salt taste intensity and eating enjoyment in people with smell loss, but this has not been studied in this population. The purpose of this study was to determine 1) whether salt intake in those with smell loss differs from population averages, 2) whether capsaicin increases flavor and salt taste intensity, and 3) if adding spice to foods increases liking in individuals with smell l

Spice, bath salts, and the U.S. military: the emergence of synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists and cathinones in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Designer drugs are synthetic compounds that contain modified molecular structures of illegal or controlled substances. They are produced clandestinely with the intent to elicit effects similar to controlled substances while circumventing existing drug laws. Two classes of designer drugs that have risen to recent prominence are "spice," synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists that mimic the effect of tetrahydrocannabinol, the active ingredient in cannabis, and "bath salts," synthetic cathinones, stimulants structurally related to amphetamines that have effects similar to cocaine and methampheta

Ethanol-Assisted Spice Extraction as an Industrial Flavoring Strategy for Chinese Braised Soup: Insights Into Volatile Composition and Flavor Regulation.

Spices are essential contributors to the aroma of Chinese braised foods, but traditional industrial application methods, such as adding loose spices or using spice bags, face critical limitations. These include inefficient release of hydrophobic aroma compounds, poor flavor consistency across batches, and lack of precise control, ultimately compromising product quality and reproducibility. In this study, we developed a spice flavor extraction strategy, and the produced spice extract solution facilitates standardized and precisely dosed application, as well as quality control of related product
