OBJECTIVES: Injuries are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children ages 1 to 18 years. There are limited studies about pediatric thoracolumbar (TL) spinal injuries; the purpose of this study was to characterize TL spinal injuries among pediatric patients evaluated in US trauma centers.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of the National Trauma Data Bank. Patients aged 1 to 18 years with a thoracic or lumbar spinal injury sustained by blunt trauma during calendar years 2011 through 2016 were included. Cervical spinal injuries, death before arrival, or penetrating trau

Huntington's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder, characterised by progressive cognitive, motor and psychiatric symptoms. Patients with advanced disease presenting to emergency medical services can pose a diagnostic and management challenge for physicians unfamiliar with the condition. We describe two patients with Huntington's disease in whom the diagnosis of traumatic spinal cord injury was delayed, discuss the role that cognitive bias and other factors played in this delay, and the lessons we can learn.

Every year, 0.93 million people worldwide suffer from spinal cord injury (SCI) with irretrievable sequelae. Rehabilitation, currently the only available treatment, does not restore damaged tissues; therefore, the functional recovery of patients remains limited. The pathophysiology of spinal cord injuries is heterogeneous, implying that potential therapeutic targets differ depending on the time of injury onset, the degree of injury, or the spinal level of injury. In recent years, despite a significant number of clinical trials based on various types of stem cells, these aspects of injury have n

Cognitive dysfunction (CD) is pervasive in individuals who have chronic spinal cord injuries (SCI). Although classically associated with concomitant traumatic brain injuries, many other causes have been proposed, including premorbid neuropsychological conditions, mood disorders, substance abuse, polypharmacy, chronic pain and fatigue, sleep apnea, autonomic dysregulation, post-intensive care unit syndrome, cortical reorganizations, and neuroinflammation. The consequences of CD are likely widespread, affecting rehabilitation and function. CD in those with SCI should be recognized, and potential

AIM: Iatrogenic vascular injuries due to spinal surgeries are rare but serious complications. Surgical management of these injuries is challenging with high morbidity rates. In this study we aim to present the results of endovascular management of iatrogenic vascular injuries due to spinal surgeries.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 11 patients (5 male, 6 female) who had vascular injuries due to cervical and lumbar spinal surgeries. Clinical findings were bleeding (n=5), leg edema (n=6) and right heart failure with severe dyspnea (n=1). The age range of the patients were betw

BACKGROUND: It is widely acknowledged that Donald Munro in the United States (1936) and Ludwig Guttmann in the United Kingdom (1944) are the founders of the modern treatment of spinal injuries. However, Germany was the birthplace of neuropathology and led the field in neurology and psychiatry. The first effective spinal injury units were established by Wilhelm Wagner in Königshütte, Silesia and Emil Kocher in Bern, Switzerland at the end of the 19th century.
SUMMARY: The modern principles of spinal injury treatment emanated from the work carried out by Wagner and Kocher. This knowledge was ap

Spinal injuries are generally very rare in childhood. Fractures of the thoracic and lumbar spine occur mainly in older children and adolescents. Exact knowledge of the anatomy is essential for accurate diagnosis in still incomplete ossification. With increasing age the classification can be performed by using the AO classification over the age of 8 years. Neurological symptoms in the thoracic and lumbar spine occur mainly in adolescence. Conventional radiography is the standard diagnostic tool for thoracic and lumbar spinal injuries. With the appearance of abnormal neurological deficits magnet

BACKGROUND: Over half of children and adolescents with spinal trauma have associated injuries, most commonly involving the appendicular skeleton, head and neck, and thorax. The incidence and characteristics of these associated injuries have been well described, but to our knowledge there has been no evaluation of the relationship between the injury characteristics and the patient age.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the trauma registries of the local pediatric and adult level 1 trauma centers, and patients aged 0 to 19 years with spinal trauma were identified. For analysis, patients were div

When health questions or concerns arise, nurses are often the first care providers contacted by women with spinal cord injuries (SCIs). This highlights the importance of nurses' understanding of specific health issues such as the perimenopause transition, along with understanding the symptoms and changes that women with SCI may experience throughout the conversion into menopause. Women aged 35 to 55 years old, with an SCI of any level or degree of completeness, no history of salpingo-oophorectomy or hysterectomy, and who receive care at a SCI model system in the mountain states, were mailed a

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review examining the cases of 137 individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) as a result of a suicide attempt between 1951 - 1992.
OBJECTIVE: To ascertain demographic details of this participant sample, explore and identify the type of psychiatric condition evident around the time of injury, and to review outcome information of this sample with specific focus on mortality, especially further evidence of deliberate self harm.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Research examining suicide rates in SCI populations has found such numbers to be significantly higher than in th

To survey the situation of traumatic spinal cord injuries (SCI) in Jordan and for a future nationwide epidemiological survey, a retrospective study was conducted at the Royal Jordanian Rehabilitation Centre (RJRC) King Hussein Medical Centre (KHMC) Amman-Jordan, where all traumatic cases within this centre in addition to a few nontraumatic spinal injury patients are referred to the spinal unit which has a capacity of 30 beds. 151 traumatic SCI patients who were admitted to the spinal unit at RJRC during the period January 1988 to December 1993 were reviewed. The estimated annual incidence was

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injuries due to penetrating wounds are not uncommon. The management of these injuries remains controversial especially with regard to the effect of laminectomy on the neurological outcome.
METHODS: Between 1980 and 1989, 64 patients injured by bullets and shell fragments to the spinal cord were reviewed. There were 58 males and 6 females: 24 injuries (37.5%) involved the cervical spine, 37 (57.8%) the dorsal spine, and 3 (4.7%) the lumbar spine. One group (group I) consisted of 47 patients (73.4%) who had immediate and complete sensorimotor loss of function. Another gr

We present a cross-sectional study designed to screen and evaluate 19 male patients with acute or chronic spinal cord injury for the presence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and radial neuropathies (RNP) in order to establish the prevalence of CTS and RNP, to compare characteristics of persons with spinal cord injury who do not have these neuropathies, to evaluate the effects of their activities and to define the causation of these neuropathies in order to prevent their occurrence during and after the rehabilitation process. Patients admitted to the Spinal Cord Injury Service with acute and ch

A series of 1365 patients treated between 1965 and 1987 because of spine injury resulting from the fall from the height was analysed. A fall from the height may cause hyperflexion, axial loading or hyperextension type of injury. Hyperflexion injury occurs usually after fall from horsedrawn wagon, scaffold, roof or pillar. Axial loading injuries dominate in falls from the ladder, tree, suicidal jumps and falls from lower height. There is remarkable correlation among the height of the fall, degree of nervous system injury and results of management.

Decompressive operations due to the complicated damages of thoracal and lumbar parts of the spine aggravate its instability. Existing constructions for inner momentary stabilization of spine are not effectual enough. On the basis of biomechanical and clinical investigations individuality modelled titanium plates with multilevel fixation by means of polymeric materials are proposed. They ensure situationally strong spine stabilization. It is possible to regulate operation mode of the plates: contraction, distraction, neutral stabilization and their combinations.

Additional to conventional x-ray examinations, high-resolution CT has a greater impact on the diagnostic evaluation of severe spine injuries. It allows exact judgment of the condition of vertebral arch, articular processes, joints and spinal axis and therefore a better delineation of the stability or instability of spinal fractures. Intraspinal fracture of spinal stenosis and intra or paraspinal soft tissues lesions are much more easily detected. For this reasons CT-evaluation of severe spinal traumata permits earlier, much more precise and in many cases successful therapy.

Eighty-eight patients over age 40 with traumatic cervical spinal cord injuries were clinically and radiographically evaluated, and comparison was made with 35 spinal cord injury patients under age 36. While most older patients sustained obvious bony and/or ligamentous damage commensurate with their neurologic findings, 25 (28%) of the 88 patients had no demonstrable bony abnormalities and 17 (20%) of the 88 patients had only minimal evidence of bony injury. Of particular interest are the patients with severe cord injuries, yet no bony abnormalities, who seem to form a distinct subgroup of the

Since Sir Ludwig Guttmann introduced the comprehensive modern clinical approach to the rehabilitation of spinal cord injured patients much experience has been accumulated. Modern spinal cord injuries centres have opened throughout the world, treating mainly acute spinal cord injuries in young patients. At Stoke Mandeville Hospital we have had the opportunity to treat several spinal patients who had suffered previous neurological or orthopaedic disorders. These complicated combinations affected the rehabilitation process and the presentations show clearly different aspects of the problem.

One hundred and twenty motorcyclists with significant spinal cord injuries, who were admitted to hospital over a five-year period, have been reviewed. Fifty-one per cent of them suffered direct injuries to the vertebral column and spinal cord, the majority remaining permanently paraplegic. Thirteen of the 25 riders who became tetraplegic were wearing open-face helmets, and 11 of these remained permanently paralysed. The survey suggests that the open-face helmet offers less protection to the cervical spinal cord than the full-face helmet. There is an urgent need to review standards for the desi
