Gnathostomiasis in wild boars from Japan.

Gnathostoma doloresi, a nematode parasite producing ulcerative and/or granulomatous lesions in the gastric wall of domestic pigs and wild boars (Sus scrofa leucomystax) throughout southeastern Asia, is an important zoonosis causing cutaneous larva migrans in humans. Patients infected with G. doloresi have been found yearly in the vicinity of Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Adult nematodes were found in 31 of 32 wild boars captured at two different geographic locations in the prefecture, a location in the high mountains and one at sea level. The parasite-free animal had gastric lesions typical of a

Thelazia rhodesi and Thelazia skrjabini in wild European bison (Bison bonasus) and farmed American bison (Bison bison) from Romania, 2021-23.

Between November 2021 and January 2023, the eyes of either slaughtered or deceased male American bison (Bison bison) and European bison (Bison bonasus) from Romania were investigated for the presence of Thelazia spp. nematodes (eye worms). These included seven farmed American bison from two locations and two wild European bison from reintroduction sites. Thelazia rhodesi and Thelazia skrjabini were present in three American bison and both European bison. A total of 38 nematodes were recovered, with T. rhodesi being the predominant species. Molecular analysis confirmed these findings and identi

Molecular Characterization of Philometra obladae (Nematoda: Philometridae) in Juvenile Oblada melanura (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Tyrrhenian Sea off Sicily, Italy.

Philometra obladae is a nematode belonging to the family Philometridae. It was morphologically described for the first time in 2008 in Oblada melanura. To date, few data on the molecular characterization of Philometridae have been reported. The aim of the present study was to molecularly characterize Philometra obladae in O. melanura inhabiting the Tyrrhenian coasts off Sicily, Italy. In July 2023, five nematodes were found and morphologically identified as Ph. obladae from the celomic cavity of four O. melanura specimens. Genomic DNA from four nematodes was extracted and two molecular markers

Spirocerca lupi in the stomach of two Andean foxes (Lycalopex culpaeus) from Chile.

The genus Spirocerca includes nematodes that parasitize the stomach and the oesophagus of carnivores, chiefly canids. Herein, we provide new data about the morphological, histopathological, and molecular characterization of Spirocerca sp. in Andean foxes (Lycalopex culpaeus) in Chile. Intact immature worms, identified as Spirocerca sp., were recovered in the lumen of the stomach from two foxes. Histologically, worms morphologically consistent with spirurid nematodes were present within the wall of the stomach and surrounded by nodular areas of inflammation with central necrotic debris. Molecul

Spirocerca lupi infection in a dog from southern Italy: an "old fashioned" disease?

Canine spirocercosis caused by Spirocerca lupi is a life-threatening helminthic disease featured by severe clinical signs and potential development of oesophageal neoplasia. This infection is considered fairly frequent in Europe but almost unknown in Italy, from where only few reports have been published in local journals at the beginning of the XXI century. In the present study, an autochthonous case of canine spirocercosis in a 2-year-old dog from southern Italy is described. The animal was admitted to a private veterinary clinic in the municipality of Potenza (Basilicata region) due to pers

First case of human gongylonemosis in France.

Gongylonema spp. are cosmopolitan spirurid nematodes that are common parasites of wild and domesticated mammals and birds. Gongylonema pulchrum Molin, 1857 is most common in ruminants, where it invades mucosa and submucosa of the mouth, tongue, oesophagus and forestomachs. It extremely rarely occurs in man, and fewer than 60 cases have been reported worldwide. We report a case from the Alsace region, which appears to be the first case of human gongylonemosis described in France.

A new species of Neoascarophis (Nematoda: Cystidicolidae) parasitic in Mullus argentinae (Perciformes: Mullidae) from the Atlantic coast of South America.

A new nematode species (Neoascarophis mariae n. sp.) is described based on specimens collected from the Argentine goatfish Mullus argentinae (Hubbs et Marini) from coastal waters off the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the genus, the new species belongs to the group of species with females that have the vulva near the posterior end of the body. Only males of Neoascarophis longispicula Moravec et Klimpel, 2009 are known and can be distinguished from those of the new species by their larger body, developed and somewhat dorsoventrally expanded flat inner part of the pseudolabia, bifurcate dei

[Imported gnathostomiasis acquired in Myanmar].

We report a case of cutaneous gnathostomiasis acquired in Myanmar where this parasitic zoonosis was considered as non-endemic until a recent outbreak. Myanmar must be added to the list of countries where the infection can be acquired in Southeast Asia. Despite a treatment with ivermectin the patient relapsed after an apparent cure. A double-dose of ivermectin is now recommended for the treatment of gnathostomiasis.

Three cases of human gnathostomiasis caused by Gnathostoma hispidum, with particular reference to the identification of parasitic larvae.

Human gnathostomiasis is well known to be caused by Gnathostoma spinigerum, G. hispidum, G. doloresi and G. nipponicum in Japan. In the present reported cases, skin biopsies were performed on three Japanese patients. As a result, cross sections of the larvae were clearly observed in the biopsied specimens. All cross sectioned larvae had an intestinal canal, which consisted from 25-35 cells. A large nucleus was observed at the center of each intestinal cell. The morphological features completely correlated with the characteristics of larval G. hispidum. Based on these findings, all three human

Site segregation of Thelazia skrjabini and Thelazia gulosa (Nematoda: Thelazioidea) in the eyes of cattle.

One thousand three hundred and twenty-two eyes obtained from slaughtered cattle throughout Alberta were examined for eyeworms. Each eye was partitioned into 9 sites and all eyeworms were recorded by site. Seven hundred eyeworms were recovered from 121 infected eyes. The distribution of Thelazia skrjabini across the 9 sites differed significantly (P < 0.001) from that of Thelazia gulosa. The 2 major lacrimal ducts associated with the Harderian gland contained 58% (354/613) of the T. skrjabini present, whereas the large ventral lateral duct of the orbital gland contained 58% (50/87) of the T. gu

Updates on the distribution and host spectrum of Dirofilaria repens in the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Among the zoonotic mosquito-borne nematodes, Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) are highly significant from a public health perspective. While D. immitis is also of major veterinary concern, D. repens is regarded as less pathogenic for carnivores, but is the main causative agent of human dirofilariosis throughout the Old World. In the Republic of Uzbekistan, recent data refer exclusively to D. immitis infection in domestic and wild carnivores, while the current prevalence and distribution of D. repens remain unknown. Between 2015 and 2021, a total of 559 dome

Microfilarial periodicity of Dirofilaria repens in naturally infested dogs.

In the past years, canine and human cases of infestation by Dirofilaria repens (Spirurida, Onchocercidae) have been increasingly reported in several European countries. Subcutaneous dirofilariosis by D. repens may either be asymptomatic in dogs or may be characterized by subcutaneous nodules and other symptoms. Information on the periodicity of D. repens microfilariae in naturally infested animals is scant, and this might impair the accurate diagnosis of subcutaneous dirofilariosis and appropriate control plans. In the present study, eight dogs infested with D. repens were sampled twice daily

Dietary effects on the development and population dynamics of the Thelazia callipaeda vector Phortica okadai revealed by age-stage, two-sex life table analysis.

BACKGROUND: Phortica okadai (Diptera: Steganinae) is the primary vector of the zoonotic eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda (Nematoda: Spirurida). However, standardized laboratory rearing protocols for this vector are still lacking, which limits research on its biology and vector competence. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of five diets (fermented apple, pear, banana, and two artificial diets) on life history traits of P. okadai using age stage, two sex life table analysis under controlled conditions (28 ± 1 °C, 75 ± 5% RH, 14:10 h L:D). Life table parameters and population dynamics were analyzed w

Cross-kingdom analysis of nymphal-stage Ixodes scapularis microbial communities in relation to Borrelia burgdorferi infection and load.

The tick microbiota may influence the colonization of Ixodes scapularis by Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease bacterium. Using conserved and pathogen-specific primers we performed a cross-kingdom analysis of bacterial, fungal, protistan and archaeal communities of I. scapularis nymphs (N = 105) collected from southern Vermont, USA. The bacterial community was dominated by a Rickettsia and several environmental taxa commonly reported in I. scapularis, as well as the human pathogens B. burgdorferi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, agent of human granulocytic anaplasmosis. With the fungal primer
