Main pancreatic duct dilatation and pancreatic cysts in relatives and spouses of patients with pancreatic cancer.

Although main pancreatic duct dilatation and pancreatic cysts are risk factors for developing pancreatic cancer, limited data exist regarding these findings in relatives and spouses of pancreatic cancer patients. The frequency of these findings was examined using long-term follow-up data and transabdominal ultrasonography focusing on the pancreas. We prospectively enrolled 184 relatives and spouses of pancreatic cancer patients and performed special pancreatic ultrasonography to detect main pancreatic duct dilatation and pancreatic cysts. First-degree relatives (148 participants) of patients w

Marital interaction quality over the transition to parenthood: The role of parents' perceptions of spouses' parenting.

Drawing from the concept of family systems theory, the present study examined how partners' marital hostility and net positive affect observed in prenatal couple interactions forecast their perceptions of each other's parenting 8 months later, and in turn, how these perceptions forecast their subsequent hostility and net positive affect in couple interactions 24 months after childbirth. Data were obtained from a longitudinal study of 124 families in central Texas over their first 2 years of parenthood. Each parent's perceptions of their spouse's parenting were coded from a couple interaction t

Male soldier family violence offenders: spouse and child offenders compared to child offenders.

Army data from 2000 to 2004 were used to compare two groups of married, male, Army soldier, first-time family violence offenders: 760 dual offenders (whose initial incident included both child maltreatment and spouse abuse) and 2,209 single offenders (whose initial incident included only child maltreatment). The majority (81%) of dual offenders perpetrated physical spouse abuse; however, dual offenders were less likely than single offenders to perpetrate physical child abuse (16% vs. 42%) or sexual child abuse (1% vs. 11%), but they were more likely to perpetrate emotional child abuse (45% vs.

Knowledge, barriers, and facilitators of Korean women and their spouses in the contemplation stage of breast self-examination.

The aim of this study was to identify the knowledge, barriers, and facilitators of breast self-examination (BSE) in Korean couples in the contemplation stage. The study design was based on assumptions from the Health Belief Model and Transtheoretical Model that contemplators perceiving benefits as greater than barriers are likely to move to the next stage. Participant couples, with wives having never practiced BSE but with an intention to do so, were drawn from churches. Qualitative research was conducted with focus group methodology including both husbands and wives in the groups. Data transc

Cumulative trauma: the impact of child sexual abuse, adult sexual assault, and spouse abuse.

The present study investigated the relationship between trauma symptoms and a history of child sexual abuse, adult sexual assault, and physical abuse by a partner as an adult. While there has been some research examining the correlation between individual victimization experiences and traumatic stress, the cumulative impact of multiple victimization experiences has not been addressed. Subjects were recruited from psychological clinics and community advocacy agencies. Additionally, a nonclinical undergraduate student sample was evaluated. The results of this study indicate not only that victimi

Individual and cross-spouse correlations of perceptions of family functioning, blood pressure and dimensions of anger.

Individual and cross-spouse correlations of perceptions of family cohesiveness, emotional expressiveness and conflict with blood pressure and five dimensions of anger were examined in 85 couples. Wives' perceptions of family cohesiveness were negatively related to their diastolic blood pressure, whereas husbands' perceptions of all three dimensions of family functioning were unrelated to their blood pressure. Cross-spouse correlations showed that both husbands' and wives' perceptions of emotional expressiveness were negatively related to their spouses' blood pressure, and husbands' perceived f

PURPOSE: Despite increasing research on posttraumatic growth (PTG) of spouses of cancer patients, and the positive effects of spouses' PTG on both spouses and patients, there is little information on PTG and its correlates among husbands of gynecological cancer survivors, especially those of newly diagnosed survivors. We aimed to assess PTG among spouses of newly diagnosed gynecological cancer survivors and to examine its correlates.
