Seventeen patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) have been investigated audiologically. Of 9 found to have a significant hearing loss, 6 were examples of Usher's syndrome; these patients had a cochlear pattern of hearing loss. The other 3 were examples of Senior's syndrome, Kearne-Sayre syndrome and Lawrence-Moon-Biedle syndrome respectively. Two of these patients had absent stapedius reflexes. It is suggested that patients with different RP-deafness syndromes may have lesions in different parts of the auditory system.

Middle ear myoclonus is a rare condition attributed to abnormal, repetitive contractions of the middle ear muscles including the tensor tympani and/or stapedius muscles. This condition generates objective tinnitus that is characterized by a "clicking" noise that is audible to both the patient and an outside observer. No specific pathophysiologic process has been identified as the cause of middle ear myoclonus, making its diagnosis and treatment challenging. In this report, we present a presumptive case of COVID-19-associated middle ear myoclonus in a 10-year-old male.

PURPOSE: Sinus tympani is the space in the retrotympanum, with variable morphology. Computed tomography is a common tool to investigate sinus tympani anatomy. During cochlear implantation or tympanoplasty, electrocochleography can be used for hearing monitoring. In such a surgical strategy the electrode is placed in the round window's region throughout posterior tympanotomy. Common accessible needle-shaped electrodes using is difficult in achieving intraoperative stabilization. The aim of the study is to assess the dimensions and shape of sinus tympani, basing on the micro computed tomography

Two tiny muscles are attached to the ossicles of the middle ear: the stapedius, whose role as a protector of the inner ear against loud noise has been widely accepted, and the tensor tympani, which remains a mystery since no valid method of detecting its contraction has yet been developed. However, tonic contraction of the tensor tympani has been associated with a number of otological conditions including fullness, tinnitus, slight hearing loss, and Menière-like findings. Our hypothesis is that an easily recognizable sign in the acoustic immittance testing that is part of almost every basic au

BACKGROUND: The term middle ear myoclonus (mem) has been invoked to explain symptoms of tinnitus presumably caused by the dysfunctional movement of either of the two muscles that insert in the middle ear: tensor tympani and stapedius. MEM has been characterized through heterogeneous case reports in the otolaryngology literature, where clinical presentation is variable, phenomenology is scarcely described, the pathogenic muscle is usually not specified, natural history is unknown, and the presumptive definitive treatment, tensor tympani or stapedius tendon lysis, is inconsistently effective. It

INTRODUCTION: Auditory neuropathy is a type of neurosensorial hypoacusis that produces significant impairment in language comprehension. Etiologically, this neuropathy has been related to perinatal hypoxia, hyperbilirubinemia, metabolic disorders and degenerative entities that affect the auditory pathway.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report five children with this disorder. Two of the children were referred for otorhinolaryngeal assessment after failing the neonatal hearing screening and one was referred because of a history of perinatal hypoxia. The two eldest children were referred because of s

Various objective electrophysiological techniques have been used to supplement the behavioral measurements for cochlear implant patients. This report summarizes various studies of these measurements, including stimulus artifact, averaged electrode voltages, electrical stapedius reflexes, electrical auditory brain stem responses, electrical middle latency responses, and cortical auditory responses. These techniques have been shown to provide valuable information in the evaluation of device and electrode integrity in addition to correlated values to behavioral thresholds and comfort levels.

In many cases speech and pure tone audiometry are not practicable. Therefore, the hearing aid fitting is based on objective techniques, like the measurement of the stapedius-reflex threshold or acoustically evoked neural responses. In particular, brain stem responses are very helpful for an objective hearing-aid fitting. They represent the full scale of hearing dynamics and supply direct information for selection and adjustment of the hearing aid. Control of the fitting can also be effected directly by measuring brain stem responses.

Objective tinnitus is a known but rare otologic symptom. This is a case report about a six-year-old boy, who was referred to a hearing clinic for further investigation of an audible clicking sound. He experienced clicking sounds, and his parents were able to hear the sounds when listening nearby. This objective tinnitus is caused by myoclonus of either the m. tensor tympani or the m. stapedius. We discuss methods to evaluate objective tinnitus including the clinical use of a stethoscope and also the possibility of using impedance measuring in patients with objective tinnitus.

A new technique, which uses Maximum Length Sequences (MLSs) to enable the recording of TEOAEs at very fast rates, has been described previously. Such a technique enables rate studies to be carried out and here the effects of stimulus rate on the contralateral suppression of TEOAEs (Collet effect) have been studied. The results show that the Collet effect has virtually disappeared by a click stimulation rate of 2000 clicks/s. The waveform changes caused by the 'adaptation' due to increase in stimulus rate and the 'suppression' due to contralateral stimulation have been evaluated and compared. T

The results of a first series of fifty stapedectomies, using newly adopted 'Fisch stapedotomy technique' are presented and contrasted with 'world results' and results of leading otologists. The essential points in the evolution of stapes surgery are outlined. In the light of the small number of deaf otosclerotics the philosophy of who should be performing stapes surgery and who should be trained to perform it, is discussed. The title 'Collective Stapedectomy' denotes personal system of collecting patients from the waiting list in batches and operating on each stapedectomy batch in consecutive

The combined findings of abnormalities of the incus and stapes, absence of the oval window, absence of the stapedius muscle (with absent pyramidal eminence and tympanic sinus in most cases), and abnormalities of different parts of the inner ear (dysplastic cochlea, hypoplastic or dysplastic vestibule, and absent semicircular canals) are characteristic of the CHARGE association. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging using 1-mm-thick contiguous slices proved useful in demonstrating the broad spectrum of temporal bone abnormalities in patients with the CHARGE association.

The authors present a case of a cochleovestibular syndrome with a scanner showing a calcified dolico-ektasis of the basilar truncus and the left vertebral artery. The patient had typical Ménière's disease symptomatology. A retrolabyrinthic diagnosis with substantial recruitment was indicated by the results of the audio-vestibular explorations (stapedius reflex, electroculography, early brainstem evoked response, electrocochleography). The electrocochleography with glycerol test indicated labyrinthic hydrops. Finally, some reflections on the role of neurovascular problems in the pathogeny of so

The aim of this study is to analyze the clinical characteristics and treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS). The clinical features of the VS patients were explored by retrospectively analyzing the clinical data from 542 cases of SSNHL patients between January 2008 and March 2013. There were 10 cases (10 ears) diagnosed with VS in 542 cases of SSNHL patients (10 ears, 1.85 %), 3 males, 7 females, with a range of 28-57 years. Among all the cases, eight patients with abnormal ABR, ten with ear ipsilateral stapedius reflexes which were compl

INTRODUCTION: Electrically evoked compound action potentials (eCAP) and electrically evoked stapedius reflexes are the most frequently used objective measurements for programming a cochlear implant (CI) audio processor. Objective methods are particularly beneficial for children and CI users that encounter difficulties in providing feedback. In this study, we compared the threshold and the slope of the eCAP amplitude growth function with the electrically evoked stapedius reflex threshold (eSRT) in pediatric CI users. Furthermore, the duration times required to perform eCAP and eSRT recordings w

A patient with hypertensive intracerebellar haemorrhage, who recovered from impending tonsillar herniation with emergency haematoma evacuation, showed persistent absence of auditory brainstem responses. The patient demonstrated a preserved stapedius reflex and hearing after recovery, indicating that the auditory brainstem pathway was not completely disrupted. We suggest that the loss of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) could be accounted for by impulse asynchrony along the auditory brainstem pathway. The existence of such a case implies that persistent absence of the ABR is not always ind

An 8-year-old boy was presented with central facial palsy caused by extramedullary leukemia which had originated from poorly differentiated abdominal lymphoma. On cerebral tomographic scanning, there were adherences in the basal area of the brain. The occurrence of central facial palsy is very rare in childhood leukemia. However, in this case facial palsy was central in type and appeared as the presenting sign. The occurrence of central facial palsy was confirmed by the absence of clinical, radiological and audiological signs of peripheral involvement. The contralateral stapedius reflex test (

By means of extratympanic phonometry, the middle ear muscular reflex activity in the startle reaction was measured in a control series, in patients with otosclerosis and in patients with operation cavaties without a functioning tensor tympani muscle. In comparison with the stapedius reflex, the startle reflex was found to be much more variable regarding latency, amplitude, and configuration. It was characterized by pronounced fatigue and a high alertness dependence. The period of latency was about 60 msec. It was possible to elicit a distinct startle reflex in operation cavities without a func

Recent studies using a satellite-linked dive recorder have shown that the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata), a common Arctic pinniped, can dive to a depth of > 1000 m and stay submerged for close to 1 h. At these depths the water pressure reaches 100 atm, entailing obvious risk of serious damage to the hearing apparatus, mainly the tympanic membrane (TM) and middle ear (ME). We dissected and photodocumented the temporal bones of five newborn and three adult hooded seals in order to study the temporal bone structure and reveal its protective mechanisms for extreme pressure changes. Specimens we
