Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia with known sources.

Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), both hospital-acquired and community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) strains, have increased in frequency in the last few years, reaching epidemic dimensions. This review discusses several clinical forms of staphylococcal infection leading to bacteraemia in a high proportion of cases. Staphylococcal (MRSA) bacteraemic pneumonia is predominantly seen in hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia, reaching a frequency of 8.4% of all bacteraemias, 30% of all nosocomial bacteraemias and 68% of all bacteraemias of patients hospitalised

Vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus in Korea.

Recent reports on some methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin have been a major concern in Korea because of the widespread use of vancomycin due to a high prevalence of MRSA in the country. We describe a 45-year-old man with long-standing pelvic abscess due to MRSA. In spite of vancomycin and teicoplanin treatment for a long period of time, the patient died from MRSA sepsis. The blood culture isolate of MRSA exhibited reduced susceptibility to vancomycin (MIC, 8 microg/ml). This is the first report of a vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus cas

Necrotizing fasciitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

Two patients with rapidly progressive necrotizing fasciitis of a lower extremity due to Staphylococcus aureus as a single pathogen are described. In both patients the portal of entry was attributed to needle puncture (intra-articular injection and intravenous catheter, respectively), followed by bacteremia. Necrotizing fasciitis occurred in a site remote from the needle puncture, suggesting metastatic infection. One patient developed toxic shock syndrome and the other a sunburn-like rash and erythematous mucosae with strawberry tongue. One patient died, and the other required above-knee amputa

Synergistic tissue destruction by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis in a 3D human skin biofilm equivalent.

Staphylococci are common skin commensals that can transition into opportunistic pathogens, particularly in biofilm-associated and polymicrobial infections. However, how interspecies interactions modulate virulence remains poorly understood, partly due to a lack of human-relevant models. We adapted a human cell-based three-dimensional skin equivalent (3DSE) into a biofilm infection model using monospecies biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus or Staphylococcus epidermidis, and a dualspecies co-culture. Biofilm architecture and spatial distribution were analysed by histology and fluorescence in situ

Structural and functional analysis of the accessory gene regulators of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis: an in Silico approach.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are tenacious pathogens that cause toxic shock syndrome. Accessory gene regulator (Agr) of Staphylococcus sp. controls the expression of multiple genes that encode virulence properties. Evolutionary covariance of accessory gene regulators of selected strains of two Staphylococcus sp. was entrenched through multiple sequence alignment, relative synonymous codon usage, codon adaptation index and compositional analysis. Artificial intelligence and machine learning based AlphaFold and TrRosetta were used to determine the tertiary str

Influence of fracture stability on Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus infection in a murine femoral fracture model.

Fracture-related infection (FRI) is a major complication in surgically fixed fractures. Instability of the fracture after fixation is considered a risk factor for infection; however, few experimental data are available confirming this belief. To study whether stable fractures led to higher infection clearance, mouse femoral osteotomies were fixed with either stable or unstable fixation and the surgical site was contaminated with either Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis)or Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)clinical isolates. Infection progression was assessed at different time points by

Predictive value of urinalysis parameters for risk stratification of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia in patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteriuria.

AIMS: Excluding bacteremia is clinically important in patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteriuria (SABU), yet reliable predictors of concomitant S. aureus bacteremia (SAB) remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed to evaluate whether routine urinalysis parameters can predict concomitant SAB in patients with SABU. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 82 patients with SABU. Demographic characteristics, urinalysis findings, inflammatory markers, and blood culture results were analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and multivariate logistic regress

Prevalence and Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Guangxi Dairy Farms.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major pathogen responsible for mastitis in dairy cows and can contaminate raw milk, thereby posing significant health risks to consumers. The emergence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) has further heightened public health concerns due to its antibiotic resistance and infectious potential. In this study, we examined the prevalence, virulence genes, antimicrobial resistance, spa types, and biofilm formation of S. aureus isolates from dairy farms in Guangxi Province, China. Among 242 randomly selected samples, 37 S. aureus strains were identified (1

Rapid Detection of Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus by Multiplex Real-Time Fluorescent PCR.

Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) is a common Gram-positive human pathogen that causes community-acquired and nosocomial infections, with diverse clinical manifestations ranging from local superficial lesions and food poisoning to fatal systemic infections. The discovery of antibiotics significantly reduced the mortality rate, but the problem of drug resistance has since become increasingly prominent. Since the first identification of MRSA in 1960, this strain has emerged as a global public health threat. MRSA is a major pathogen of nosocomial infections, capable of causing various severe disea

Staphylococcus hemolyticus: The Most Common and Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus Species Causing Bacteremia in North India.

INTRODUCTION: Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) species are normal skin commensals but may also cause bacteremia. Therefore, isolating a CoNS species on blood culture often leads to a diagnostic dilemma about whether to consider the isolate as a true pathogen or not. This study was done to understand the distribution of various CoNS species in bloodstream infections, determine their antibiotic resistance patterns, and identify possible risk factors and patient outcomes in hospital settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Inpatients with confirmed bacteremia defined as isolation of the same CoN

Characterization of MLS(b) resistance among Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates carrying different SCCmec types.

This work characterizes MLS(b) resistance in 39 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and 32 Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) isolates. Of 21 erm(A) gene encoding MRSA isolates, 71.4% carried SCCmecIII, whereas of 12 isolates carrying the erm(C) gene, 83.3% carried SCCmecIV. Among the 25 MRSE isolates positive for the erm(C) gene, 80% had SCCmecIV or nontypeable cassettes. Isolates carrying these genes had MIC(90) ≥ 256 μg/mL to erythromycin and clindamycin. The msr(A) gene was associated with a low MIC(90) to these drugs. The erm(A) gene was associated with SCCmecIII in MRSA iso

Comparison of community-onset Staphylococcus argenteus and Staphylococcus aureus sepsis in Thailand: a prospective multicentre observational study.

Staphylococcus argenteus is a globally distributed cause of human infection, but diagnostic laboratories misidentify this as Staphylococcus aureus. We determined whether there is clinical utility in distinguishing between the two. A prospective cohort study of community-onset invasive staphylococcal sepsis was conducted in adults at four hospitals in northeast Thailand between 2010 and 2013. Of 311 patients analysed, 58 (19%) were infected with S. argenteus and 253 (81%) with S. aureus. Most S. argenteus (54/58) were multilocus sequence type 2250. Infection with S. argenteus was more common in

Staphylococcus aureus host interactions and adaptation.

Invasive Staphylococcus aureus infections are common, causing high mortality, compounded by the propensity of the bacterium to develop drug resistance. S. aureus is an excellent case study of the potential for a bacterium to be commensal, colonizing, latent or disease-causing; these states defined by the interplay between S. aureus and host. This interplay is multidimensional and evolving, exemplified by the spread of S. aureus between humans and other animal reservoirs and the lack of success in vaccine development. In this Review, we examine recent advances in understanding the S. aureus-hos
