The distribution of mecA, mecR1 and mecI and sequence analysis of mecI and the mec promoter region in staphylococci expressing resistance to methicillin.

The presence and sequences of genes that regulate the expression of methicillin resistance was investigated in 42 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and 102 isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). PCR was used to detect mecA and the regulatory genes mecR1 and mecI. In a selected group of isolates, the sequences of mecI and the mec promoter region were also determined and compared with the sequences obtained from pre-MRSA strain N315. The genetic diversity of the collection was assessed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). mecA was present in 21 S. aureus and 44 CNS. mecR1 was

Bacterial and mycoplasmal flora of the middle ear of laboratory rats with otitis media.

Purulent otitis media was confirmed at necropsy in 35 laboratory rats, 14 of which had shown clinical signs of middle ear infection. The bacterial flora of both the affected and grossly normal middle ears was similar, often mixed, and comprised mainly of Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Pasteurella pneumotropica and Corynebacterium spp. Twenty-one isolates of Mycoplasma spp. were recovered from the middle ears of 11 rats with purulent otitis media and one normal rat. Fourteen of the isolates were further identified as either Mycoplasma arthriditis (eight isolates) or Mycoplasma pulmonis (six isola

Calcific myonecrosis of the leg: report of three patients presenting with infection.

BACKGROUND: Calcific myonecrosis is a rare late complication of trauma, affecting almost exclusively the lower limb. Its radiologic appearance is characteristic. Superimposed infection usually is a sequela of biopsy. CASE REPORT: We present three patients, one with bilateral involvement, who presented with calcific myonecrosis and spontaneous infection. Three infections were attributable to a single microorganism: Enterobacter cloacae, Staphylococcus hominis, and S. haemolyticus were recovered. Multiple microorganisms were responsible in the other case. Treatment consisted of radical surgical

Staphylococcus saprophyticus as a cause of urinary tract infections.

Our objectives in this study were to elucidate various aspects of the epidemiology of Staphylococcus saprophyticus. This organism was isolated from the midstream urine specimens of 7.5% of 145 college women with frequency and urgency of urination and dysuria, but from only 0.07% of 14,835 urine specimens from adult inpatients at the Victoria General Hospital. It was found to be part of the urethral flora of only 2% of healthy women. Other staphylococci which formed part of the urethral flora of 100 healthy women included S. epidermidis (59 women), S. hominis (15 women), S. haemolyticus (13 wom

Staphylococcus aureus Bacteriophage 52 Endolysin Exhibits Anti-Biofilm and Broad Antibacterial Activity Against Gram-Positive Bacteria.

Bacteriophage endolysins have been shown to hold great promise as new antibacterial agents for animal and human health in food preservation. In the present study, endolysin from Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus ATCC 27692-B1 bacteriophage 52 (LysSA52) was cloned, expressed, and characterized for its antimicrobial properties. Following DNA extraction from bacteriophage 52, a 1446-bp DNA fragment containing the endolysin gene (lysSA52) was obtained by PCR amplification and cloned into pET SUMO expression vector. The positive clone was validated by sequencing and open-reading frame analysis. T

Methicillin-resistant staphylococcal bacteremia in patients with hematologic malignancies: clinical and microbiological retrospective comparative analysis of S. haemolyticus, S. epidermidis and S. aureus.

Although Staphylococcus haemolyticus (SH) represents an emerging etiology of methicillin-resistant (MR) coagulase-negative staphylococcal nosocomial bacteremia, little is known of clinical significance of this infection. Thus, we performed case-control retrospective comparative analysis of MRSH bacteremias (MRSHB), methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis bacteremias (MRSEB), and methicillin-resistant S. aureus bacteremias (MRSAB) in patients with hematologic malignancies. Most patients in the three groups were neutropenic and had a central venous catheter (CVC) in place at the onset of bacteremia

Development of Human Serum Albumin-Based Hydrogels for Potential Use as Wound Dressings.

Protein-based materials such as human serum albumin (HSA) have demonstrated significant potential for the development of novel wound management materials. For the first time, the formation of HSA-based hydrogels was proposed using a combination of thermal- and ethanol-induced approaches. The combination of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and limited (up to 20% v/v) ethanol content offers a promising strategy for fabricating human serum albumin-based hydrogels with tunable properties. The hydrogel formation was studied using in situ dynamic light scattering (DLS) for qualitative and semi-quanti

Actinomyces Europaeus: A Case Report of a Rare Subcutaneous Infection Following Abdominoplasty and a Review of the Literature.

Actinomyces europaeus is an emerging Gram-positive bacterium associated with skin and soft tissue infections. It exhibits intrinsic resistance to multiple antibiotics, and its fastidious growth and the polymicrobial nature of infections often delay diagnosis and treatment. This report highlights a rare case of A. europaeus infection following elective surgery. A 78-year-old woman presented with asthenia and purulent umbilical discharge two months after abdominoplasty. A CT scan revealed a large supra-fascial fluid collection. She underwent surgical debridement and lavage. Cultures identified A
