Spondylodiscitis Following Oxygen-Ozone Therapy: A Case Report of Lactobacillus iners Infection and a Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Oxygen-ozone (O2-O3) therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for discogenic lumbar pain. Although rare, spinal infections-specifically spondylodiscitis-have been reported following intradiscal injections. To date, Lactobacillus iners has not been described as a causative agent in this context. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old immunocompetent woman presented with progressive lumbosciatica and elevated inflammatory markers three months after intradiscal O2-O3 therapy. MRI revealed L4-L5 spondylodiscitis with paravertebral involvement. Surgical biopsy confirmed L. iners as the path

Comparison of bacterial maxillary sinus cultures between odontogenic sinusitis and chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is distinct from other forms of rhinosinusitis. Diagnosing ODS can be challenging because of nonspecific clinical presentations and underrepresentation in the literature. The purpose of this study was to compare maxillary sinus bacterial cultures between patients with ODS and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), to determine whether certain bacteria are associated with ODS. METHODS: This was a retrospective case-control study of 276 consecutive patients from August 2015 to August 2019 who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for bacterial ODS, CR

Staphylococcal species composition in the skin microbiota of domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica).

Staphylococci are a natural component of the skin microbiota of many organisms, including humans and birds. As opportunistic pathogens, they can cause a variety of infections in humans. The close contact between domestic pigeons and their owners provide an opportunity for exchange of skin-associated bacteria. In this study, 41 healthy racing pigeons were tested. Staphylococci were detected on the skin of each bird (41/41, 100%). Isolates were identified at the species level using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The diversity of the S

Molecular diagnosis of polymicrobial brain abscesses with 16S-rDNA-based next-generation sequencing.

OBJECTIVES: Brain abscesses lead to high mortality despite antibiotic and surgical treatment. Identification of causative bacteria is important to guide antibiotic therapy, but culture-based methods and molecular diagnostics by Sanger sequencing of 16S PCR products are hampered by antibiotic treatment and the often polymicrobial nature of brain abscesses. We have applied 16S-rRNA-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) for metagenomic analysis of intracranial abscess (brain and epidural) and meningitis samples. METHODS: Seventy-nine samples from 54 patients with intracranial abscesses or menin

Case-control risk factor study of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) infection in dogs and cats in Germany.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) has emerged as a highly drug-resistant small animal veterinary pathogen. Although often isolated from outpatients in veterinary clinics, there is concern that MRSP follows a veterinary-hospital-associated epidemiology. This study's objective was to identify risk factors for MRSP infections in dogs and cats in Germany. Clinical isolates of MRSP cases (n=150) and methicillin-susceptible S. pseudintermedius (MSSP) controls (n=133) and their corresponding host signalment and medical data covering the six months prior to staphylococcal is

Dietary nitrate in man: friend or foe?

Based on the premise that dietary nitrate is detrimental to human health, increasingly stringent regulations are being instituted to lower nitrate levels in food and water. Not only does this pose a financial challenge to water boards and a threat to vegetable production in Northern Europe, but also may be eliminating an important non-immune mechanism for host defence. Until recently nitrate was perceived as a purely harmful dietary component which causes infantile methaemoglobinaemia, carcinogenesis and possibly even teratogenesis. Epidemiological studies have failed to substantiate this. It

Surgical management and functional outcomes of cranial infections requiring craniotomy or craniectomy: a retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Cranial infections requiring surgical intervention-whether surgical site infections (SSI) after craniotomy/craniectomy or spontaneous infections such as subdural empyema and intraparenchymal abscess-pose significant management challenges. We present our 10-year institutional experience treating these cases at a high-volume neurosurgical center. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients ≥18 years old who underwent craniotomy or craniectomy for non-catheter-related cranial infection between 2015 and 2025. Data on demographics, comorbidities, microbiology, surgical management, anti

Induction of experimental endocarditis by continuous low-grade bacteremia mimicking spontaneous bacteremia in humans.

Transient high-grade bacteremia following invasive procedures carries a risk of infective endocarditis (IE). This is supported by experimental endocarditis. On the other hand, case-control studies showed that IE could be caused by cumulative exposure to low-grade bacteremia occurring during daily activities. However, no experimental demonstration of this latter possibility exists. This study investigated the infectivity in animals of continuous low-grade bacteremia compared to that of brief high-grade bacteremia. Rats with aortic vegetations were inoculated with Streptococcus intermedius, Stre

Mink (Neovison vison) kits with pre-weaning diarrhea have elevated serum amyloid A levels and intestinal pathomorphological similarities with New Neonatal Porcine Diarrhea Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Pre-weaning diarrhea (PWD) is a syndrome affecting farm-raised neonatal mink kits. Apart from diarrhea it causes greasy skin exudation, dehydration, and distressed behavior and can ultimately lead to death. No specific causative agents have been identified and the syndrome is regarded as multifactorial. The aim of the present study was to investigate a possible inflammatory state in mink kits with PWD, as indicated by raised serum concentrations of the acute phase protein serum amyloid A (SAA) and by changes in intestinal pathomorphology and intestinal contents of bacteria. Molecular mapping to species level of the tonsillar crypt microbiota associated with health and recurrent tonsillitis.

The human palatine tonsils, which belong to the central antigen handling sites of the mucosal immune system, are frequently affected by acute and recurrent infections. This study compared the microbiota of the tonsillar crypts in children and adults affected by recurrent tonsillitis with that of healthy adults and children with tonsillar hyperplasia. An in-depth 16S rRNA gene based pyrosequencing approach combined with a novel strategy that included phylogenetic analysis and detection of species-specific sequence signatures enabled identification of the major part of the microbiota to species

Inhibition by yeast killer toxin-like antibodies of oral Streptococci adhesion to tooth surfaces in an ex vivo model.

BACKGROUND: Monoclonal (KTmAb) and recombinant (KTscFv) anti-idiotypic antibodies, representing the internal image of a yeast killer toxin, proved to be microbicidal in vitro against important eukaryotic and prokaryotic pathogens such as Candida albicans, Pneumocystis carinii, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Staphylococcus aureus, S. haemolyticus, Enterococcus faecalis, E. faecium, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, including multidrug-resistant strains. KTmAb and KTscFv exerted a strong therapeutic effect in well-established animal models of candidiasis and pneumocystosis. Streptococcus mutans is the

[Clinical significance of the Streptococcus milleri group in peritonsillar abscesses].

Few researchers have microbiologically studied peritonsillar abscesses in detail, and their results have been conflicting. Although Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A beta-streptococcus) is commonly considered an important pathogen in this infection, recent studies have demonstrated the recovery of many other streptococci mainly consisting of alpha-streptococci. Few studies have identified these streptococci at the species level, however. We studied details of bacteriology in 31 cases of peritonsillar abscess treated between 1991 and 2000. The Streptococcus milleri group was most frequently isola
