Electrophoresis of whole-cell soluble proteins of microorganisms isolated from bacteremias in endodontic therapy.

We have previously demonstrated that anaerobic bacteria are the microorganisms most frequently isolated from blood following endodontic therapy of teeth with apical periodontitis. Phenotypic characterisation of the isolates suggested that the bacteria in the blood originated from the root canal. The present experiment using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) was carried out in an effort to verify these findings, and to further study the microorganisms involved in endodontic bacteremias. Soluble cellular proteins were extracted from 11 reference strains and 26

Orbital Abscess Developed Apart From Paranasal Sinusitis and Dacryocystitis in Fibrous Dysplasia.

A 48-year-old man visited the emergency department of our hospital with swelling of the left upper and lower eyelids from the day before. On the first examination, he had severe swelling of the left upper and lower eyelids, proptosis, and chemosis. Left intraocular pressure was 33 mmHg. Computed tomographic images showed an orbital abscess in the anterosuperolateral orbital space, maxillary and ethmoidal sinusitis, and dacryocystitis. The orbital abscess was not contiguous to maxillary and ethmoidal sinusitis and dacryocystitis. Ground-glass appearance was seen in the frontal, maxillary, and e

Neurotoxic Effects of Ammonia in a Patient With Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency and Bilateral Brain Abscesses: Case Report.

Brain abscesses are a rare complication of dental procedures. High concentrations of ammonia in brain abscesses may increase vasogenic edema and other brain abscess symptoms. Ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTCD) is an x-linked genetic disorder of the urea cycle associated with an increased risk of brain damage due to hyperammonia. During acute metabolic decompensations, due to stresses such as infection in OTCD patients, blood ammonia levels become moderately high. This, in turn, causes cerebral glutamine levels to increase and exacerbate cerebral edema and neurological symptoms. In th

Clival Osteomyelitis in an Adult Patient: A Case Report.

Clival osteomyelitis is an uncommon skull base infection that mostly affects elderly diabetics and is frequently caused by malignant otitis externa or paranasal sinus infections. It manifests as severe otalgia, fever, auditory fullness, and purulent otorrhea. Clinical history, physical examination, test data, radiographic findings, and pathogen identification all contribute to a diagnosis. Treatment consists of extended intravenous broad-spectrum antibiotics, with severe cases necessitating surgical debridement. We present a case of a 20-year-old girl with bilateral ear discharge, nasal blocka

Brain Abscess Associated with Polymicrobial Infection after Intraoral Laceration: A Pediatric Case Report.

Brain abscesses, infections within the brain parenchyma, can arise as complications of various conditions including infections, trauma, and surgery. However, brain abscesses due to polymicrobial organisms have rarely been reported in children. We herein report a case of a 9-year-old girl with unresolved congenital cyanotic heart disease (CCHD) presenting with right hemiplegia who was diagnosed with brain abscess caused by Streptococcus intermedius, Parvimonas micra, and Fusobacterium nucleatum after oropharyngeal injury. She was treated with intravenous antimicrobial therapy, drainage under cr

Antibodies in normal and diseased pulps reactive with microorganisms isolated from deep caries.

Immunoglobulin molecules in the supernatant fluids (SF) from pulpal explant cultures have been observed to react with microorganisms implicated in infections of root canals. In this study, the reactivity of immunoglobulin molecules in the SF from normal and irreversible pulpitis pulps to six strains of predominant microorganisms isolated from the immediate layer of carious lesions above the pulps used for explant cultures was investigated using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Two ATCC strains of Eubacterium were also included in this assay. Specific antibodies to Lactobacillus casei subs

Streptococcus anginosus Group of Bacteria as an Underappreciated Cause of Pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) consists of oral facultative anaerobic bacteria that are increasingly identified as causative organisms of empyema, yet they are not often considered to be a cause of community-acquired pneumonia. The objective of this study was to determine the pathogenesis of empyema caused by SAG bacteria in pure culture (ie, no other organisms grown in culture or seen on Gram stain of the exudate) and in mixed cultures. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted in 3 hospitals in an urban region of Southern California. The sample included adult p

Eikenella corrodens infection of the oral cavity as a cause of bacterial endocarditis.

The authors describe the case of a 24-year-old woman with valve disease. After a bout of respiratory tract infection, she was diagnosed to have bacterial endocarditis associated with mitral valve disease. The causative agents isolated included Eikenella corrodens, Streptococcus intermedius, Bacteroides oralis and Bacteroides bivius. At the same time, the patient was found to have developed IgA immunodeficiency. A complication accompanying the cardiac disease was spontaneous pneumothorax. Since antibiotic therapy had failed, the mitral valve was replaced by a prosthetic one. After the procedure

Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Cimbopogon winterianus and Origanum syriacum Extracts and Essential Oils against Uropathogenic Bacteria and Foodborne Fungal Isolates.

This study focused on testing the antibacterial and antifungal activity of Origanum syriacum (O. syriacum) and Cimbopogon winterianus (C. winterianus) extracts and their essential oils (EOs). The bacteria were isolated from urine samples and identified by a VITEK assay, and the fungi were isolated from spoiled food samples and further identified by MALDI-TOF. The susceptibility of the microbial isolates was assessed by determining the bacteriostatic and bactericidal/fungicidal effects by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC) brot

Molecular mapping to species level of the tonsillar crypt microbiota associated with health and recurrent tonsillitis.

The human palatine tonsils, which belong to the central antigen handling sites of the mucosal immune system, are frequently affected by acute and recurrent infections. This study compared the microbiota of the tonsillar crypts in children and adults affected by recurrent tonsillitis with that of healthy adults and children with tonsillar hyperplasia. An in-depth 16S rRNA gene based pyrosequencing approach combined with a novel strategy that included phylogenetic analysis and detection of species-specific sequence signatures enabled identification of the major part of the microbiota to species

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of the human-specific toxin intermedilysin.

Intermedilysin is a human-specific toxin from Streptococcus intermedius, which is part of normal human oral flora. The bacterium is an opportunistic pathogen with a tendency for deep-seated infection in the brain and liver. Intermedilysin belongs to the cholesterol-dependent cytolysin (CDCs) family of toxins, which have been identified in several different bacteria including the serious human pathogens S. pneumoniae and Clostridium perfringens. Intermedilysin, however, is the only member that shows exclusive specificity for human cells. The toxin has a couple of non-conservative amino-acid sub

Spondylodiscitis Following Oxygen-Ozone Therapy: A Case Report of Lactobacillus iners Infection and a Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Oxygen-ozone (O2-O3) therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for discogenic lumbar pain. Although rare, spinal infections-specifically spondylodiscitis-have been reported following intradiscal injections. To date, Lactobacillus iners has not been described as a causative agent in this context. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old immunocompetent woman presented with progressive lumbosciatica and elevated inflammatory markers three months after intradiscal O2-O3 therapy. MRI revealed L4-L5 spondylodiscitis with paravertebral involvement. Surgical biopsy confirmed L. iners as the path

Dysbiotic salivary microbiota in dry mouth and primary Sjögren's syndrome patients.

OBJECTIVES: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by reduced lacrimal and salivary secretion. Sicca symptoms together with fatigue and musculoskeletal pain can significantly reduce the patients' quality of life. Furthermore, low salivary secretion may disrupt the oral microbial homeostasis. The aim of this study was to compare the salivary microbiota from pSS patients with patients with sicca symptoms not fulfilling the classification criteria for pSS (non-SS), and with healthy controls without sicca complaints. METHODS: Pellets from centrifuged chewing-stimu

Microbial Analyses of Subdural Empyema: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Subdural empyema (SDE) is an infection between the dura and arachnoid mater, presenting with symptoms such as fever, headache, altered sensorium, neurological deficits, and seizures. Due to its rapidly progressive nature, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. This paper aims to identify common pathogens, imaging findings, and the necessity of emergent neurosurgical intervention. We present the case of a 49-year-old woman with an SDE who underwent craniotomy to evacuate pus and hematoma. Cultures confirmed Streptococcus intermedius, and the patient improved postoperatively with the complet

A Case of Acute Coalescent Mastoiditis With Early Diagnosis of Lupus Anticoagulant-Hypoprothrombinemia Syndrome Prompting Immediate Surgical Drainage.

Acute coalescent mastoiditis is a severe complication of acute otitis media characterized by bone destruction in the mastoid process and a risk of serious complications such as abscess formation and intracranial spread. Prompt surgical management is often required, especially in cases with evidence of disease progression. We report the case of a four-year-old girl who developed acute coalescent mastoiditis complicated by transient lupus anticoagulant-hypoprothrombinemia syndrome (LAHPS). Despite initial antibiotic treatment, the patient's symptoms worsened, and imaging revealed bone erosion in
