Animal manure is a major reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), yet the factors governing their composition and activity remain insufficiently understood. In this study, metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and quantitative PCR (qPCR) were integrated to characterize microbial communities and resistome profiles in manure from five animal types across multiple growth stages. Results demonstrated that animal type was the dominant factor shaping both microbial community structure and ARG composition at DNA and RNA levels, whereas growth stage did not significantly influence overall communi

ermC is a plasmid gene which specifies resistance to macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B antibiotics. The product of ermC was previously shown to be an inducible rRNA methylase, which is regulated translationally, and a mechanism for this regulation, termed the translational attenuation model, has been proposed. This model postulates that alternative inactive and active conformational states of the ermC mRNA are modulated by erythromycin-induced ribosome-stalling during translation of a leader peptide. In the present study the translational attenuation model was tested by constructing a seri

BACKGROUND: Multidrug resistant Staphylococcus aureus is common in both tertiary and primary health care settings. Emergence of methicillin resistance in S. aureus (MRSA) along with macrolide, lincosamide, streptogramin B (MLSB) has made treatment of Staphylococcal infection more challenging. The main objective of this study was to detect MRSA, MLSB (inducible; MLSBi and constitutive; MLSBc) resistant S. aureus using phenotypic methods and to determine their antibiogram.
METHODS: Various samples were collected from 1981 patients who attended Lumbini Medical College and Teaching Hospital (LMCT

We have reported that the gene mph(C) (formally referred to as 'mphBM') is located on plasmid pMS97 342 bp downstream of the msr(A) gene. msr(A) specifies resistance to macrolides by ABC-transporter-mediated efflux, and mph(C) has 49% identity to the amino acid sequence of MPH(2')II, which encodes a phosphotransferase that inactivates some macrolide antibiotics. A strain of Staphylococcus aureus NCTC8325 containing plasmid pMS97 inactivated unlabeled and (14)C-labeled erythromycin when tested by bioautographic and radioautographic techniques. In addition to erythromycin, other 14-membered ring

Background:Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) remains a leading cause of invasive infections in pregnant women, fetuses, and neonates. Universal screening at 36-37 weeks of gestation and intrapartum antimicrobial prophylaxis are essential to prevent adverse outcomes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, serotype distribution, and antimicrobial susceptibility of GBS isolates among pregnant women in Greece. Methods: Vaginal and rectal swabs were collected from pregnant women undergoing GBS screening between January 2021 and December 2025. Samples were processed using

The present study aimed to assess the occurrence of transferable determinants conferring resistance to tetracyclines, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B, vancomycin, beta-lactams, and aminoglycosides in 40 samples of commercialized edible mealworms (Tenebrio molitor L.) purchased from European Union (EU) and non-EU producers. A high prevalence of tet(K) was observed in all of the samples assayed, with percentages of PCR-based positivity that ranged from 80% (samples from Thailand) to 100% (samples from the Netherlands, Belgium and France). For macrolides, erm(B) prevailed, being detected in

Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are opportunistic pathogens that particularly cause infections in patients with implanted medical devices. The present research was performed to study the virulence potential of 53 clinical isolates of Staphylococcus capitis, Staphylococcus auricularis, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, Staphylococcus simulans, Staphylococcus cohnii and Staphylococcus caprae. All clinical strains were clonally unrelated. Isolates carried genes encoding resistance to β-lactam (mecA) (15 %), aminoglycoside [aac(6')/aph(2″)(11 %), aph (3')-IIIa (15 %), ant(4')-Ia (19 %)] and macr

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae or group B streptococcus (GBS) is a significant cause of neonatal sepsis. Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended for pregnant women identified to be rectovaginally colonised between 34 and 37 weeks' gestational age to decrease the risk of invasive disease in their newborns. An effective multivalent GBS vaccine may prevent a broader scope of GBS-associated diseases, such as GBS early-onset disease, GBS late-onset disease, spontaneous abortion, stillbirth and maternal bacteraemia. Serotype distribution of GBS isolates is essential to determine the

The use of antimicrobials in food animal production leads to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and animal manure constitutes the largest reservoir of such AMR. In previous studies, composted swine manure was found to contain substantially lower abundance of AMR genes that encode resistance to tetracyclines (tet genes) and macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLS(B)) superfamily (erm genes), than manures that were treated by lagoons or biofilters. In this study, temporal changes in AMR carried by both cultivated and uncultivated bacteria present in swine manure during simulat

There is little information about invasive infections by group B streptococci (GBS) and their antimicrobial susceptibilities in Latin America. We performed a prospective multicenter study to determine the serotype distribution and the antimicrobial susceptibility of GBS in Argentina. We identified 58 cases, but only 44 had sufficient data to be evaluated. Eight early-, four late-, and one fatal late, late-onset neonatal infections due to GBS were found. A total of 31 patients were adults with bacteremia, skin and soft tissue infections, osteomyelitis, arthritis, meningitis, abdominal infection

Infected chronic venous ulcers (VUs) represent a major health problem. We analysed the aerobic microbiome in the VUs, the virulence, and drug-resistance of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) strains. Swabs from 143 outpatients and inpatients Polish subjects were collected. SA strains were tested for drug sensitivity using a phenotyping method and for methicillin-resistant SA (MRSA) and macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB) resistance using PCR. We analysed virulence genes, the genetic similarity of strains, and performed Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec typing and Staphylococcal protein A

In cow farms, the interaction between animal and environmental microbiomes creates hotspots for antibiotic resistance dissemination. A shotgun metagenomic approach was used to survey the resistome risk in five dairy cow farms. To this purpose, 10 environmental compartments were sampled: 3 of them linked to productive cows (fresh slurry, stored slurry, slurry-amended pasture soil); 6 of them to non-productive heifers and dry cows (faeces, fresh manure, aged manure, aged manure-amended orchard soil, vegetables-lettuces and grazed soil); and, finally, unamended control soil. The resistome risk wa

Group G streptococci (GGS) are among the bacterial causes of pharyngitis. In this study, a total of 57 GGS strains isolated from throat swabs were initially screened by NCCLS disk diffusion test for penicillin and erythromycin susceptibilities. Phenotypes of the erythromycin resistance were determined by a triple-disk test and the responsible genes were sought by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using mefA, ermA, ermA-subclass ermTR and ermB primer sets. Erythromycin and clindamycin minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the resistant isolates were measured by NCCLS agar dilution method, wh
