BACKGROUND: Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) is the second most common subtype of thyroid malignancy, with distant metastases most often to the bones, lungs, brain, and liver, and only rarely to other sites. Rectal follicular thyroid-like carcinoma is a rare condition characterized by infiltration of FTC within the rectal wall. There are almost no literature reports.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of rectal thyroid-like follicular carcinoma in a 61-year-old woman. The patient presented with intermittent rectal bleeding, and a colonoscopy revealed a mass in the mid-rectum. She underwent lapa

The prevalence of hyperthyroidism in women is between 0.5-2% and it is 10 times less common in men. The most common causes are Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, and autonomously functioning thyroid adenoma. Rare causes of hyperthyroidisms are as follow: pituitary adenoma, autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashitoxicosis), levothyroxine overdose, inadequate iodine supplementation (including amiodaron induced hyperthyroidism, iodine-based contrast media), hCG excess (pregnancy, gestational trophoblastic disease, germ-cell tumors), drug induced hyperthyroidism, differentiated thyroid carcinomas a

Examination by immunoperoxidase methods showed that two strumal carcinoids contained thyroxine in the follicular epithelium and colloid. Ultrastructure showed features of thyroid epithelia. Granule-containing cells replaced some follicular epithelial cells at the colloid interface. The morphology of the granules of these cells resembled those of C-cells and foregut-hindgut carcinoids. Transition between thyroid and carcinoid occurred by proliferation of interfollicular cells which subtly formed trabecular structures. Immunoperoxidase for calcitonin was positive both in the interfollicular cell

Gynaecological tumours present a broad spectrum of histological subtypes due to the diverse anatomical and tissue origin of the reproductive organs. Rare tumours affect less than 6 per 100 000 individuals annually, posing significant challenges in diagnosis and management due to limited clinical awareness. Indeed, treatment protocols rely on options developed for more common histotypes, which may have limited efficacy on these rare tumours. In recent years, collaborative international efforts have started to address these gaps, improving standards of care. A comprehensive understanding of rare

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic thyroid is an uncommon condition resulting from the aberrant development of the normal thyroid gland and is usually found along the thyroglossal tract: lingual, submandibular, thyroglossal cysts, intra-tracheal and mediastinal, or, on rare occasions, in the adrenal gland, gallbladder, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and struma ovarii.
CASE REPORTS: We describe a novel case where primary papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) was found after a trans-oral excision of a tumor containing ectopic thyroid tissue at the posterior pharynx, an area not known to be a location for ect

An ovarian strumal carcinoid which synthesized peptide hormones, but did not induce the carcinoid syndrome, was analysed histochemically, immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally. Dot-immunobinding assays were performed in order to determine the endocrine gene expression. The amylase resistant colloid was found to be PAS-positive in the follicular portions of the tumour. Carcinoid cells showed Grimelius positive argyophilic granules in the subnuclear position. The Fontana-Masson argentaffin reaction was negative. Immunohistochemistry for adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) revealed strong re

RATIONALE: Highly differentiated follicular carcinoma of ovarian origin (HDFCO) represents an exceptionally rare subtype of malignant struma ovarii. Despite its histologically indolent appearance, it retains metastatic potential. Early diagnosis, optimal management, and follow-up protocols can significantly reduce recurrence rates.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a 38-year-old female who was admitted to the hospital with lower abdominal pain for 1 month.
DIAGNOSES: Preoperatively, the patient underwent pelvic ultrasound and computed tomography scans, which revealed multiple nodules and masses in

A 30-year-old single woman presented with an incidental finding of abdominal mass associated with severe constipation. Her cancer antigen-25, alpha-foetoprotein and beta human chorionic gonadotropin levels were normal, but her carcinoembryonic antigen level was raised at 7.6 g/dL. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a 11.4 cm × 8.6 cm × 9.5 cm right ovarian mass with solid and cystic areas. An open right cystectomy was performed. Intraoperatively, she was found to have hirsutism and clitoromegaly. During the operation, there was a right ovarian 10-cm mass, with faecal loading from the caecum to

The clinicopathologic features are presented of 8 malignant neoplasms occurring in adult teratomas, and of 2 malignant monodermal teratomas found in a continuous series of 1029 cases of ovarian adult teratomas. The age of the patients was 44--76 years. The first 8 observations included 6 epidermoid carcinomas, 1 undifferentiated carcinoma and 1 strumal carcinoid. In the epidermoid carcinomas malignancy was recognized peroperatively only in three instances. One tumor had infiltrated the broad ligament on one side and another the urinary bladder. The neoplasm appeared as a mass which thickened t

BACKGROUND: Pseudo-Meigs syndrome (PMS) is a rare condition in which the primary tumor is most commonly ovarian teratoma, struma ovarii, ovarian metastatic tumor, or leiomyoma. Cases of PMS associated with ovarian borderline mucinous tumors or early-stage mucinous cystadenocarcinomas are exceedingly rare, with only two reported to date.
CASE PRESENTATION: This article presents the cases of two young women in 30s who sought medical attention due to progressively worsening dyspnea or abdominal distension. Preoperative serum tumor marker levels and imaging suggested advanced ovarian cancer; howe

Thyrotoxicosis is a pathological syndrome in which tissue is exposed to excessive amounts of circulating thyroid hormones. Including its subclinical form, it is considered as one of the most frequent endocrine disorders in the general population. If not detected in a timely fashion, thyrotoxicosis can have serious health consequences. The most common forms of thyrotoxicosis include diffuse toxic goiter (Graves' disease), toxic multinodular goiter (Plummer's disease), and toxic adenoma (Goetsch's disease). The significant progress in the fields of hormonal assessment, imaging procedures and mol

This review looks at the causes of the association between thyroid dysfunction (hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism) and ovarian cancer (OC) risk. Epidemiological data have revealed that thyroid dysfunction, particularly hyperthyroidism, is associated with increased risk, progression, and mortality in patients with OC. In addition, research studies and databases have demonstrated that both the expression and localization of thyroid hormone receptors alpha (TRα) and beta (TRβ) and membrane thyroid hormone receptor integrin alpha V beta 3 (αvβ3) affect OC progression and survival in OC patients.

Meigs syndrome is the triad of ascites, hydrothorax, and benign ovarian tumor (mostly fibroids). It is a diagnosis of exclusion, and the characteristic symptoms disappear after resection of the tumor. Instead, in Pseudo-Meigs syndrome, the triad includes a nonfibroma ovarian tumor. The latter may consist of benign tumors (ie, of fallopian tube or uterus, struma ovarii, and ovarian leiomyomas) but can also comprise ovarian or metastatic gastrointestinal malignancies. The authors describe a case of sudden death in a 43-year-old woman, with no noteworthy reported history of present illness or medi

Different forms of hyperthyreosis have to be distinguished: Frequent forms: Basedow's disease (Graves' disease, autoimmunogenic hyperthyreosis), Plummer's disease (focal or disseminated functional autonomy). Rare forms: Hyperthyreosis with thyreoiditis. This 'morphologic' hyperthyreosis is due to a destruction caused by an infection combined with a release of the thyroid hormones. This transitory hyperthyreosis can be observed particularly in the beginning of a thyreoiditis De Quervain. The treatment of the inflammation eliminates the hyperthyreosis. Sometimes, a hyperthyreosis may also be obs

Somatic malignancy arising from a mature ovarian teratoma is a rare phenomenon, occurring in 1% to 3.5% of cases. These somatic tumors are most commonly epidermal malignancies, but they can develop from any somatic component, including thyroid tissue. Increasing evidence suggests that in such cases, the pathogenesis is driven by the same mutational profile as seen in their conventional somatic counterparts. Here, we report the first case of an STRN::ALK fusion in a papillary thyroid carcinoma arising from the thyroid component of a mature ovarian teratoma. The patient presented with a 68 mm ma
