Epidemiological observations and management challenges in extrapedal mycetoma: A three-decade review of 420 cases.

Mycetoma is a serious, destructive, disfiguring chronic granulomatous inflammatory disease affecting the subcutaneous tissues that spread to involve the skin, deep tissues and bone. The disease predominately affects the limbs, and extrapedal mycetoma is rarely reported. The reported extrapedal ones are characterised by high morbidity and mortality. This communication reports on 420 patients with extrapedal mycetoma seen and managed at the Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC), University of Khartoum, between January 1991 and December 2021. In this descriptive, cross-sectional, hospital-based study, t

Measuring interference with employment and education reported by women with abusive partners: preliminary data.

This study examines the reliability and convergent validity of the Work/School Abuse Scale (W/SAS), a measure of the ways that abusive men interfere with women's participation in education and employment. Results indicate good reliability as measured by coefficient alpha and significant correlations with both a revised version of the Conflict Tactics Scale and the Psychological Abuse Index. The W/SAS is a useful measure of the ways in which physical force and other means of interfering with women's lives isolate them from activities that might provide income, social contacts, and a sense of ac

Preliminary Investigation of a Novel Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Curriculum on the Wellbeing of Middle Schoolers.

OBJECTIVES: A number of school-based interventions for preventing and attenuating symptoms of anxiety and depression in youth have been developed worldwide but evidence of their effectiveness is mixed. None of these curricula stem from existing children's literature, however, the Harry Potter (HP) series has been identified as potentially imparting Cognitive Behavioural Therapy concepts. METHODS: This study aimed to broadly capture, at an interim stage, the feasibility of a pilot HP curriculum aimed at imparting CBT skills to middle-schoolers in order to inform full development of the curricu

Analysis of CYP21 coding polymorphisms in three ethnic populations: further evidence of nonamplifying CYP21 alleles among whites.

BACKGROUND: Adrenal steroid 21-hydroxylase is essential for the synthesis of both mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids. The gene for this enzyme, CYP21, contains several frequent coding polymorphisms. Because of its essential function in steroid synthesis, polymorphisms in this enzyme might influence a variety of disease processes. However, before disease-association studies are performed, it is important to understand the frequency of these polymorphisms among normal individuals. METHODS: Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with restriction enzyme digestion or size length polymorphism an

The community support and its role in adolescent pregnancy and school reintegration in rural Rwanda: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: In low-income rural Rwanda, adolescent pregnancy limits health and education, leading to poor health outcomes, high dropout rates, and restricted socioeconomic mobility. While previous studies have inspected the prevalence, stigma, and health-related aspects of adolescent pregnancy in Rwanda, research is needed to investigate the impact of parental support and reproductive health education in these communities. OBJECTIVES: This research investigates the connection between adolescent pregnancy, socioeconomic status, and parental engagement in reproductive health education in rural

The psychosocial wellbeing of orphans: The case of early school leavers in socially depressed environment in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: The emergence of a large population of orphaned youth in sub-Saharan Africa is due to the natural maturity of orphaned children. Research indicates that orphaned youth face more negative psychosocial challenges than their younger counterparts do. Furthermore, these challenges are intensified for early school leavers. This paper describes how experiencing maternal death affects the psychosocial wellbeing of orphaned youth who left school before completing high school. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was undertaken among purposively sampled orphaned youth using in-depth in

Does heavy adolescent marijuana use lead to criminal involvement in adulthood? Evidence from a multiwave longitudinal study of urban African Americans.

While marijuana use is common during adolescence, it can have adverse long-term consequences, with serious criminal involvement being one of them. In this study, we utilize longitudinal data from the Woodlawn Study of a community cohort of urban African Americans (N=702) to examine the effects of heavy adolescent marijuana use (20 or more times) on adult criminal involvement, including perpetration of drug, property and violent crime, as well as being arrested and incarcerated. Utilizing propensity score matching to take into account the shared risk factors between drug use and crime, regressi

Direct and Indirect Pathways From Adverse Childhood Experiences to High School Dropout Among High-Risk Adolescents.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with an increased risk for school dropout. This study examined pathways from childhood adversity to school dropout through academic, behavioral, emotional, and social pathways. Data were collected prospectively from 728 adolescents and their caregivers who participated in the Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect and from child protective services records. Path analyses revealed a direct association between ACEs and dropout, as well as indirect effects through poor reading achievement and elevated externalizing problems. ACEs were a

[Economic evaluation of a manual-based, multimodal cognitive behavioural therapy for school avoiding children with psychiatric disorder].

OBJECTIVE: Untreated school refusal increases the risk of a premature discontinuation of the educational career. The aim of this study is the economic evaluation of a manual-based treatment for school refusal in comparison to the standard treatment. METHOD: Within the cost-minimisation analysis, resource use is measured retrospectively for six months using the CSSRI questionnaire. Unit costs for most health care services are derived from published standard prices. Costs are calculated from the societal perspective based on prices compiled in 2011. The cost comparison during the one-year inter

Research on the impact of generative AI interaction modes on the improvement of school-age children's early reading ability and college students' auxiliary intervention.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of digital empowerment, generative artificial intelligence has been widely applied in school-age children's reading education, and digital reading has become one of the primary types of environmental exposure for school-age children. However, school-age children face challenges such as insufficient age-appropriate content and uncontrollable physical and mental strain. There is an urgent demand for a public health intervention model that balances reading-related health benefits, prevents and controls digital exposure risks, avoids physical and mental health impa

Prescription drug use, misuse and related substance use disorder symptoms vary by educational status and attainment in U.S. adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse (PDM) rates are highest in adolescents and young adults. Little research in these high-risk groups has examined PDM differences by educational status or attainment. This investigation attempted to further our understanding of adolescent and young adult prescription drug use and misuse through examining PDM type (i.e., nonmedical misuse, medical misuse and mixed misuse) and substance use disorder (SUD) symptoms from PDM by educational status/attainment. METHODS: Data were from the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, with 13,585 adolescent and 14,55

Reduced mandibular growth in experimental arthritis in the temporomandibular joint treated with intra-articular corticosteroid.

The aim of this investigation was to study the effect of intra-articular (i.a.) corticosteroid injections (IACIs) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) on mandibular development in antigen-induced TMJ arthritis. Ten-week-old female New Zealand white rabbits (n = 42) were randomly divided into four groups: group A, control (no injections); group B, placebo (repeated i.a. TMJ saline injections); group C, untreated arthritis (repeated induction of TMJ arthritis); and group D, steroid (repeated induction of TMJ arthritis + IACI). All animals had two tantalum implants inserted in the right side of t
