Strategies for Managing Pharmacy Experiential Education During COVID-19.

In recent months, the coronavirus pandemic has significantly affected almost every industry in the United States, including health care and higher education. Faculty and students at colleges and schools of pharmacy nationwide have needed to quickly adapt as the delivery of curricula has shifted to primarily online format. Additionally, experiential rotations have been significantly affected as practice settings such as hospitals and outpatient clinics have limited students' interactions with patients or stopped allowing students on-site altogether. Our commentary will explore strategies that h

"Let's Talk Stigma": A Pharmacy-Based Program for Opioid Use Disorder Anti-Stigma Education in Pennsylvania.

Opioid overdoses in the United States remain a significant public health concern. Opioid use disorder (OUD) is stigmatized, exacerbating negative health outcomes. Reducing stigma in healthcare, including in pharmacies, is critical. The "Let's Talk Stigma" program was collaboratively developed with two schools of pharmacy, a local health department, and individuals with lived drug use experience. It aimed to reduce OUD-related stigma among pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, student pharmacists, and other allied health professionals. The program included six core components: a podcast, continuin

Promoting Creative Problem-Solving in Schools of Pharmacy With the Use of Design Thinking.

Creativity and innovation are commonly discussed topics in the health professions and health professions education. However, initiating creative problem-solving without having a well-defined process in place can be a significant struggle. The design thinking process is gaining popularity in the health professions as a helpful strategy for individuals to address complex problems. In this commentary, we outline the design thinking process and advocate for the use of design thinking by faculty members to promote creative problem-solving in schools and colleges of pharmacy. The design thinking pro

Supporting PharmD graduates after unsuccessful licensing examination attempts.

Not passing the North American Pharmacy Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) is the reality for a significant number of PharmD graduates. The average first time pass rates for the NAPLEX have experienced significant drops since 2017, hitting an all-time low (76.6 %) for the Class of 2023. While most candidates eventually pass the NAPLEX, a staggering 3228 PharmD graduates remain unlicensed due to unsuccessful licensure examinations from cycle years 2022 to 2024. Further decline is anticipated with impending changes to the structure of the NAPLEX in 2025. Unfortunately, unlicensed graduates are unabl
