Pulmonary air leak syndromes are extremely rare complications of systemic autoimmune connective tissue diseases and the occurrence of spontaneous subcutaneous emphysema (SSE) from pulmonary leak in the absence of pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum is even rarer. We report a case of recurrent SSE in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis and interstitial lung disease. The SSE was managed conservatively each time and it resorbed over several days. There has been no previous documented report of SSE in the absence of pneumomediastinum, pneumothorax or pulmonary nodules in a patient with RA.

INTRODUCTION: Although diverticular disease of the colon is frequent, perforated diverticulitis causing subcutaneous emphysema is a uncommon entity. We wish to present this extremely rare case of perforated colonic diverticulum in the subcutaneous tissue, which is the first one that we have encountered in our practice, along with the accompanying diagnostic and therapeutic issues and a review of the literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of an 83-year-old man who admitted to the emergency room due to an abdominal subcutaneous emphysema. Physical examination revealed a severe sub

In the neck or face, there are different causes for subcutaneous emphysema such as injury to the sinuses, the hypopharynx, the laryngotracheal complex, the pulmonary parenchyma, the esophagus or the presence of gas-forming organisms. However, factitious subcutaneous emphysema, a rare cause, must be considered in the differential diagnosis. In this clinical report, we discuss a 20-year-old girl who was under follow-up because of recurrent subcutaneous emphysema of the face and periorbital area. After 2 years of work-ups, including a period of close observation in the intensive care unit, self a

We describe a case of subcutaneous cervicofacial emphysema in a 21-year-old man who had undergone endotracheal intubation while under general anesthesia 2 months earlier. The emphysema had arisen on the right side of the face and neck and extended to the right shoulder and the cubital fossa. The patient was hospitalized and treated with parenteral antibiotics and hyperbaric oxygen. On hospital day 10, he had improved sufficiently to warrant discharge on the next day. Two months later, the patient presented at a follow-up visit with a recurrence, and he was readmitted. By hospital day 28, his c

Pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema of the neck occur exceptionally in spontaneous, retroperitoneal perforation of the sigmoid colon. These signs, in association with a septic syndrome and multiple organ failure, mandate the search of a gastrointestinal tract perforation, even in the absence of digestive symptoms. Careful deep palpation of the abdomen may determine the abdominal origin of the septic focus and thereby provide justification for exploratory laparotomy without further diagnostic investigations.

Although a rare complication of labor, subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum (Hamman's syndrome) must be considered in the parturient complaining of chest or neck pain, dysphagia, or shortness of breath. With conservative management, the prognosis is favorable. The case presented is the first of Hamman's syndrome complicating the labor of a twin gestation. The pathophysiology, symptoms, and management guidelines for the syndrome are reviewed.

A case of subcutaneous facial emphysema secondary to use of the Cavi-Jet air polishing system is reported. Air pressure of the Cavi-Jet may exceed that of other dental instruments such as the air/water syringe or air turbine handpiece. Inadvertent angulation of the nozzle tip into a severe periodontal pocket precipitated this condition, which resolved with no serious sequelae. No treatment other than prophylactic antibiotics was prescribed.

Retroperitoneal abscesses may develop insidiously, resulting in delayed diagnosis with significant morbidity and mortality. Subcutaneous emphysema of the thigh may be a late manifestation of this process, and often heralds a poor prognosis because of associated myonecrosis and fulminant sepsis. The presentation and clinical course of such a patient is summarized, and the relevant anatomy of the retroperitoneal spaces that predisposes to this condition is described.

Pulmonary tuberculosis with the simultaneous development of the complications of empyema, multiloculated pyopneumothorax, subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum is rare. The development of these complications leads to remarkably increased incidence of morbidity and mortality in patients. So appropriate and timely management needs to be ensured for better outcomes.

Subcutaneous emphysema is commonly associated with infection caused by gas-producing organisms. In this case report, we describe a rare instance of traumatic subcutaneous emphysema of the hand and forearm caused by a puncture injury to the first web space of the hand. Our objective is to increase awareness of the potential for seemingly minor trauma to cause entrapment of significant air in subcutaneous tissues, thereby decreasing the likelihood that a clinically benign-appearing patient will be started down an unnecessarily aggressive treatment pathway. A 16-year-old, otherwise healthy white

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome virus coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2). Many aspects of its pathology and pathogenesis are not well understood.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe a series of spontaneous air leak cases we found in our coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive 1086-patient cohort.
RESULTS: Two out of six patients eventually required mechanical ventilation and succumbed to COVID-19. We presume that acute lung injury leading to SARS-CoV-2 with associated acute respiratory distress syndrome predisposes patients

Pneumomediastinum is defined as the presence of free air between mediastinal structures. Although most of the cases occur spontaneously or due to traumatic reasons, they may rarely be observed after dental procedures. It is considered that the use of high speed air turbin drill during dental procedures might cause mediastinal emphysema. High-pressured air dissects the soft tissues starting from the impaired dento-alveolar membrane and reaches the mediastinum. Contaminated fluid and air can reach the mediastinum after the deterioration of the intraoral barrier and may result in highly mortal de

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous emphysema (SE) is the presence of air in the subcutaneous tissue. In severe cases, massive SE can lead to anxiety, pain, dyspnoea and decreased eye sight due to swelling.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe two cases, a 75-year old male and a 66-year old male, who suffered from massive SE. When conventional therapy failed, transdermal incisions and negative pressure therapy (NPT) were applied. NPT is a commonly used method for wound care. NPT resulted in a fast relief of the SE-related symptoms in both our patients.
CONCLUSION: In case of severe subcutaneous emphysema, whe

Pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema are the main manifestations of gas syndrome in patients with tracheal injury. Traditional mediastinal decompression in case of tension emphysema is carried out through different types of cervical or transpleural mediastinotomy and subsequent passive drainage. Clinical observation of the use of VAC-therapy in the patient with injury of the membranous part of trachea followed by tension pneumomediastinum is presented. Cervicotomy with dissection of anterior mediastinum and installation of vacuum-assisted dressing were performed. Fast regression of sub

INTRODUCTION: Simultaneous subcutaneous emphysema, spontaneous pneumothorax, and pneumomediastinum are complications rarely observed synchronously during an acute exacerbation of bronchial asthma. Although spontaneous pneumothorax has already been reported in asthma patients in the literature, its concurrence with subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum is extremely rare except for iatrogenic conditions.
CASE STUDY: We describe a patient who presented to the emergency room with progressive dyspnea and chest pain. Three days before, she consulted her general physician with a history of vi

Foreign body airway (FBA) is a common problem among the children. Variable presentation makes it difficult to diagnose a case of FBA, particularly, when no definite history of aspiration is available. Subcutaneous emphysema (SCE) and pneumomediastinum are rare presentations. We report a case of FBA who presented with SCE without any history of aspiration. A 3-year-old female child was admitted with respiratory distress, fever and SCE over the right side of chest, neck and face. Initially, she was diagnosed as a case of pneumonitis with barotrauma. X-ray of the chest revealed SCE with pneumomed

INTRODUCTION: Subcutaneous emphysema with pneumomediastinum is a rare phenomenon with a high morbidity and may occur spontaneously.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old Caucasian man presented with sudden onset of a painful, swollen neck and was found, via clinical and radiological examination to have subcutaneous emphysema. A swallow study showed no oesophageal perforation. Computed tomography of his neck and thorax demonstrated pneumomediastinum but no other pathology. Management was conservative with intravenous antibiotics, fluids and no oral intake. He had a history of a productive cough and

Subcutaneous emphysema (SE) is the presence of air or other gas in the subcutaneous tissue and is generally associated with pneumothorax and/or pneumomediastinum. We describe an unusual presentation of SE of the chest wall without radiological evidence of pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum, which aetiopathogenesis remains open to several hypotheses in spite of an accurate clinical study.
