Association of subcutaneous and visceral fat with circulating microRNAs in a middle-aged Japanese population.

Purpose It has been demonstrated that circulating microRNA profiles are affected by physiological conditions. Several studies have demonstrated that microRNAs play important roles in the regulation of adiposity. However, few have investigated the relationship between circulating microRNAs and obesity, which has become a major public health problem worldwide. This study investigated the association between circulating microRNAs and obesity in a Japanese population. Methods Obesity parameters, such as subcutaneous and visceral fat adipose tissue, body fat percentage, and body mass index were ass

Hypocalcemia Associated with Subcutaneous Fat Necrosis of the Newborn: Case Report and Literature Review.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SCFNN) is a rare benign inflammatory disorder of the adipose tissue but may be complicated by hypercalcemia or less frequently, hypocalcemia, resulting in morbidity and mortality. Here we report the case of a neonate with subcutaneous fat necrosis who surprisingly developed hypocalcemia instead of hypercalcemia. A full-term female neonate was delivered by emergency cesarean section for fetal distress and was subsequently admitted to the Special Care Baby Unit. The mother's pregnancy was uncomplicated up to delivery. Her anthropometric measurements were

Subcutaneous Fat Necrosis of the Newborn With Initial Hypocalcemia and Familial Recurrence: A Case Report.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFNN) is a rare disorder characterised by indurated plaques or nodules with or without erythema, typically distributed over the cheeks, extremities, posterior trunk, buttocks, and thighs, and appears during the first 2 weeks of life. It is commonly associated with perinatal asphyxia and, while usually self-limited, can lead to severe hypercalcemia. There is no known familial association. The present article describes a neonate with extensive disease, counterintuitive hypocalcemia, and a family history of SFNN and reviews the existing literature on SFNN

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn presenting as a large plaque with lobulated cystic areas.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn (SFN) usually occurs in the first few weeks of life in full-term infants and presents as indurated, distinct nodules with a predilection for the cheeks, shoulders, back, buttocks, and proximal extremities. Most cases are related to some form of fetal distress, including obstetric trauma. Some cases are associated with hypercalcemia. We report a case of SFN with an unusual clinical presentation, complicated by hypercalcemia.

Subcutaneous fat necrosis after paracentesis: Report of a case in a patient with acute pancreatitis.

A patient with acute pancreatitis developed subcutaneous fat necrosis of the anterior abdominal wall secondary to leakage of pancreatic enzymes through a rent in the peritoneum following paracentesis. The same patient also had another subcutaneous complication of pancreatitis, namely, nodular liquifying panniculitis of the lower extremities. The diagnosis was made by the typical histological findings of subcutaneous fat necrosis, foci of necrotic cells with a "ghost-like" appearance, and basophilic-staining calcium soaps deposited around the necrotic cells.

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high-fat-fed female mice.

Higher levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) circulate in the blood of people with obesity and predict hyperlipidemia and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease in studies predominantly conducted in women. To understand the roles of PAI-1 in women with obesity, we generated inducible whole-body PAI-1-depleted female mice (Pai-1i-KD). After high-fat diet feeding, Pai-1i-KD and littermate controls did not differ in body weight or energy balance. However, Pai-1i-KD females accumulated smaller inguinal WAT adipocytes. Spectral flow cytometry revealed reduced adipocy

The visceral fat area/subcutaneous fat area ratio is positively associated with carotid atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has demonstrated that visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area (SFA) have different influences on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We aimed to investigate the relationship between the visceral fat area (VFA), the subcutaneous fat area (SFA) ratio (V/S), and carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) in patients with T2DM. METHODS: From January 2018 to May 2023, 1838 patients with T2DM admitted to the National Metabolic Management Centre in our hospital were assigned to two groups based on comorbid CAS. Human Loss-of-Function ZNRF3 Mutation Impairs Adipose Thermogenesis and Drives Subcutaneous Fat Expansion.

UNLABELLED: Zinc and ring finger protein 3 (ZNRF3) functions as a transmembrane E3 ubiquitin ligase. Although genome-wide association studies have implicated ZNRF3 in body fat distribution, the evidence from human genetics and animal models has been lacking. Here, through whole-exome sequencing of 1,944 obese individuals and 2,161 healthy lean control individuals, we identified a rare loss-of-function mutation in human ZNRF3 (p.V228L) observed exclusively in 8 obese individuals. These carriers exhibit increased hip circumference and subcutaneous fat area and lower fasting glucose levels compar

Usefulness of free subcutaneous fat pads for refractory secondary pneumothorax due to lung cancer.

Surgical treatment for a pneumothorax involves resection of the pulmonary pleural fistula, and closure of the fistula or coverage of the fistula using pericardial fat pads or an intercostal muscle flap. In some cases, however, these treatments are difficult because of thickened pleura or dense pleural adhesions in the thoracic cavity. We report two cases of refractory secondary pneumothorax due to lung cancer that were successfully treated using free subcutaneous fat pads to cover the pulmonary pleural fistulas. Both patients had advanced lung cancer, and each developed a pneumothorax after ch

A New Protocol to Treat Abdominal Subcutaneous Fat Combining Microwaves and Flat magnetic stimulation.

Background: A healthy lifestyle is not always able to improve the abdomen’s appearance, especially in those patients who have undergone sudden weight changes. Objective: We aimed at evaluating the efficacy of combined microwaves and flat magnetic stimulation (FMS) to treat abdominal localized adiposity and laxity. Methods: Twenty-five patients were subjected to two treatment sessions per month on the abdominal area with microwaves. FMS was also performed twice per week, with a minimum of two days between each session for two months. The technology uses three types of different protocols: massa

Altered FDG Biodistribution in Subcutaneous White Fat on PET/CT Following l-Asparaginase Chemotherapy.

A 13-year-old boy with mediastinal T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma demonstrated an altered biodistribution with diffuse activity in subcutaneous white adipose tissue and decreased visceral activity on interim posttreatment FDG PET/CT. This altered biodistribution was attributed to administration of the chemotherapeutic enzyme l-asparaginase 3 hours preceding the PET/CT, altering adipocytes amino acid and glucose metabolism. Treatment response assessment was adversely affected by the altered biodistribution, emphasizing the importance of maximizing the time between chemotherapy and PET/CT during

Obstructive sleep apnea and CPAP therapy alter distinct transcriptional programs in subcutaneous fat tissue.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been linked to dysregulated metabolic states, and treatment of sleep apnea may improve these conditions. Subcutaneous adipose tissue is a readily samplable fat depot that plays an important role in regulating metabolism. However, neither the pathophysiologic consequences of OSA nor the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in altering this compartment's molecular pathways are understood. This study aimed to systematically identify subcutaneous adipose tissue transcriptional programs modulated in OSA and in response to its effective treatment wi

Mechanisms behind lipolytic catecholamine resistance of subcutaneous fat cells in the polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Lipolytic catecholamine resistance in sc fat cells is observed in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). The mechanisms behind this lipolysis defect were explored in vitro; sc fat cells were obtained from 10 young, nonobese PCOS women and from 14 matched, healthy control women. Fasting plasma glycerol levels were reduced by one third in PCOS (P < 0.05). Adipocytes of PCOS women were about 25% larger than in the controls (P < 0.05) and had 40% reduced noradrenaline-induced lipolysis (P < 0.05), which could be attributed to a 10-fold decreased beta(2)-adrenoceptor sensitivity (P < 0.05) and low abi
