Reemerging Sudan Ebola virus disease in Uganda, 2011.

Two large outbreaks of Ebola hemorrhagic fever occurred in Uganda in 2000 and 2007. In May 2011, we identified a single case of Sudan Ebola virus disease in Luwero District. The establishment of a permanent in-country laboratory and cooperation between international public health entities facilitated rapid outbreak response and control activities.

Leishmaniasis in Sudan. Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis.

Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is increasingly recognized in Sudan as a complication of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), occurring in c. 55% of patients after, or during treatment of, VL. The development of PKDL seems to be restricted to parasites of the Leishmania donovani sensu stricto cluster; no particular zymodeme has been found to be associated with it. In contrast to PKDL in India, PKDL in Sudan occurs within 0-6 months after treatment for VL. The rash may be macular, maculo-papular or nodular, and spreads from the perioral area to other parts of the body, depending on grade of

Protein-energy malnutrition in northern Sudan: clinical studies.

The medical history, clinical features and investigations of 145 children with kwashiorkor were compared with 113 marasmic kwashiorkor, 158 marasmic children and 186 nutritionally normal controls of similar age admitted to hospital in Khartoum. Factors in the group with protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) which could relate to aetiology include: a history of prolonged illness and anorexia, frequent and prolonged episodes of diarrhoea and recent measles. The delay in achievement of developmental milestones in PEM children probably reflects the frequent and chronic illnesses in this group. An epis

Sudan Black B positivity in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

An adult patient with Sudan Black B (SB B) positive leukaemic lymphoblasts is described. Peroxidase and naphtol AS D chloroacetate esterase stains were negative. The diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) was based on morphology (FAB classification: L1), on immunological marker studies (cALL+, Tdt+, Ia+) and on electron microscopy, revealed blasts, compatible with lymphoblasts. Additional proof of the diagnosis of ALL were the diffuse lymphadenopathy and the rapid response to ALL chemotherapy. Scattered azurophilic granules were present in some lymphoblasts; ultrastructurally multipl

Cervical neonatal teratoma in Sudan: a case report.

Cervical neonatal teratomas represent rare congenital germ cell tumors originating from all embryonic layers, accounting to ~3% of childhood teratomas. The anatomical positioning of these tumours presents considerable risks both prenatally and postnatally, such as polyhydramnios, airway deviation, and obstruction. This study documents the case of a 45-day-old female neonate from South Darfur, Sudan, who exhibited a massive anterior cervical mass since birth. Imaging studies revealed a lobulated cystic formation with calcifications that were inseparable from the thyroid gland. A surgical excisi

TB is the leading cause of death of people with HIV and also a major contributor to antimicrobial resistance. Its presumed that TB was the cause of 1% of the total deaths among inpatients in Sudan in 2017. The current study is aimed to provide pooled prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis among Sudanese as well as to determine any socio-cultural risk factors associated. A systematic review of th

Neonatal tetanus in South Sudan: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal tetanus is a life-threatening disease of public health importance; it is yet to be eliminated and is still occurring in South Sudan. It is caused by a neurotoxin from a bacterium Clostridium tetani whose spores exist in the environment. Compared to high-income countries, most low-income countries lack intensive care units, and magnesium sulfate shown to improve neonatal tetanus outcomes. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the outcome of neonatal tetanus in Al Sabah Children's Hospital, Juba, South Sudan. METHODS: We conducted a case series study in Al Sabah Children's H

Endomyocardial fibrosis in Sudan: clinical and echocardiographic features.

OBJECTIVE: Endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) is a rare disease and is often an underdiagnosed and forgotten cardiomyopathy. The objective of this study was to document the current frequency of EMF in Sudan by defining and selecting cases from patients attending the echocardiography laboratory. Additionally we aimed to create an EMF registry for Sudan. METHODS: The study started in January 2007 and is on-going. All the patients attending our echocardiography clinics in four different hospitals in Khartoum, Sudan, were included. Transthoracic echocardiography was used as the main diagnostic and sel

Ocular disorders among schoolchildren in Khartoum State, Sudan.

From December 2005 to June 2007, a total screening of all 1418 government primary schools in Khartoum State, Sudan, was performed to estimate ocular problems among children aged 6-15 years. We screened 671,119 children (56.7% males) for significant refractive error and other eye ailments. Ocular problems were found in 20,321 (3.03%) children. The 3 localities with highest ocular pathology were Karary (26.2%), Ummbada (21.0%) and Jabal Awlia (15.7%). The overall prevalence of refractive error was 2.19%. Myopia was found in 10,064 (1.50%) children while 4661 (0.70%) were hyperopic. Other ocular

The 2007 Rift Valley fever outbreak in Sudan.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a neglected, emerging, mosquito-borne disease with severe negative impact on human and animal health and economy. RVF is caused by RVF virus (RVFV) affecting humans and a wide range of animals. The virus is transmitted through bites from mosquitoes and exposure to viremic blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected animals. During 2007 a large RVF outbreak occurred in Sudan with a total of 747 confirmed human cases including 230 deaths (case fatality 30.8%); although it has been estimated 75,000 were infected. It was most severe in White Nile, El Gezira, and Sennar st

Anaemia and stillbirth in Kassala Hospital, Eastern Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the reduction of stillbirths is a high priority, especially in view of the targets set by the Millennium Development Goals. It is crucial that health policy-makers and programme managers are aware of the epidemiology of stillbirths. OBJECTIVES: This was a case-control study conducted in Kassala hospital in Eastern Sudan to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for stillbirth. Cases were women who delivered stillbirths; two consecutive women who delivered a live-born neonate per case were used as controls. RESULTS: Among 1342 singleton deliveries, there were 44 sti

Unsafe abortion and abortion care in Khartoum, Sudan.

Unsafe abortion in Sudan results in significant morbidity and mortality. This study of treatment for complications of unsafe abortion in five hospitals in Khartoum, Sudan, included a review of hospital records and a survey of 726 patients seeking abortion-related care from 27 October 2007 to 31 January 2008, an interview of a provider of post-abortion care and focus group discussions with community leaders. Findings demonstrate enormous unmet need for safe abortion services. Abortion is legally restricted in Sudan to circumstances where the woman's life is at risk or in cases of rape. Post-abo

Sudan: the possible original focus of visceral leishmaniasis.

Fifty-two Leishmania strains, obtained from human patients and dogs in a visceral leishmaniasis focus in Sudan, were characterized by isoenzyme electrophoresis (15 enzymes). The phylogenetic analysis showed that the 7 Leishmania zymodemes obtained hold ancestral positions on the phylogenetic tree, supporting the hypothesis of an East African origin of visceral leishmaniasis.
