The aim of the study was to compare the growth rate of the kidneys of infants who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and control babies under 1 year; 227 infants who died in St. Petersburg from 1983 to 1990 and who met the criteria for SIDS were included in the study; 138 infants who died suddenly of respiratory infections within the same period constituted a control group. The infants did not have signs of dehydration, malformations, tumours or intrauterine infections. Morphologically the kidneys were intact. Factors which might influence the weight of the kidneys at the time of deat

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether induction of labor is related to the occurrence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) using a population-based, case-control study.
METHODS: Cases comprised infants born between 1984-1988 in Washington state who died of SIDS according to their death certificate (ICD-9-CM 798.0) (N = 728). For comparison, we randomly selected a group of infants born in these same years who did not die of SIDS (N = 3021). Information regarding the pregnancy, labor, delivery, and condition of the newborn was obtained from the infants' birth certificates.
RESULTS: Among the ind

OBJECTIVE: To compare the thermal environment of infants who died of the sudden infant death syndrome with that of age matched control infants.
DESIGN: Case-control study. Infants who died were matched with two controls, one for age and one for age and birth weight. Thermal measurements were conducted at the death scene for cases and at the scene of last sleep for control infants, who were visited unexpectedly within four weeks of the index infant's death on a day of similar climatic conditions. A follow up questionnaire was administered to parents of cases and controls.

To determine the incidence of periodic breathing (PB) episodes during sleep, 48 subsequent sudden infant death syndrome siblings and 48 control infants, matched by sex, gestational age, and chronologic age, were studied by home pneumogram technique. The sudden infant death syndrome siblings had a statistically significant increase in the percent of sleep time spent in PB, in the number of episodes/100 minutes of PB, in the longest episode PB, and in the average duration of all episodes of PB. We conclude that PB is present in a higher amount in sudden infant death syndrome siblings as compared

Placentas from 79 victims of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) were compared with placentas from 30,640 controls who survived in a search for evidences of infections or other disorders that might have damaged the SIDS victims before birth. Placentas from the SIDS victims had an increased frequency of acute funisitis, acute chorioamnionitis, lymphocytic infiltration of the decidua and macrophages in the fetal membranes. The acute funisitis and chorioamnionitis were associated with preterm deliveries and were probably related to amniotic fluid bacterial infections which are a common cause

Many victims of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) have abnormally heavy cardiac right ventricles. The degree of this abnormality is directly proportional to: a) the mass of muscle about small pulmonary arteries, b) the amount of brown fat retention about adrenal glands, and c) the presence of hepatic erythropoiesis. The pulmonary arterial abnormality is probably the result of chronic alveolar hypoventilation, while brown fat retention and hepatic erythropoiesis are likely consequences of chronic hypoxemia. These abnormalities are found in both SIDS victims who die with and those who die

BACKGROUND: In 2006 the obligation of autopsy for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) was introduced in Italy by the Ministry of Health and a national protocol was approved in 2014. No data are yet available concerning its systematic application and our toxicology results raise an epidemiological alert related to SIDS.
METHODS: A prospective postmortem investigation including toxicological and genetic analysis on consecutive sudden unexpected death in infants < 1 year of age was conducted in North-East, Italy in the time interval 2019-2024.
RESULTS: Unexpected positive toxicological results

PURPOSE: The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant for which no reason can be found after a postmortem examination. The primary causes of SIDS have not been determined. The purpose of this study was to examine the primary causes of this syndrome by reviewing the research results and new theories and in view of recent experimental findings.
METHODS: The theories on SIDS were reviewed. The results of computer simulations of this disorder using an isomorphic model that were published in the past were compared to new experimental results and h

AIM: To clarify the possible role of accidental asphyxiation/suffocation for infants in shared sleeping situations.
METHODS: As it has recently been shown that there is an association between maternal obesity and sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) an index was calculated by dividing parental body mass index (BMI) by the shared sleeping surface area.
RESULTS: A much higher index was derived for an obese individual on a narrow sleeping area such as a sofa (50) compared to a thin adult on a queen-sized mattress (5).
CONCLUSION: The index may be a way of semi-quantitating high, and low, risk

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction has been implicated in the pathophysiology of the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is an enzyme of the cholinergic system, a major branch of the autonomic system, and may provide a measure of autonomic (dys)function. This study was undertaken to evaluate BChE activity in infants and young children who had died from Sudden Infant Death or Sudden Unexpected Death.
METHODS: In this case-control study we measured BChE activity and total protein in the eluate of 5μL spots punched from the dried blood spots taken at birth as part of

Background SIDS is the major cause of death among healthy born infants in developed countries. Its causes are still unclear, but its risk can be reduced by implementing some simple active interventions. In Spain, limited attention was given to SIDS by the national healthcare system, and actual data on healthcare professionals' practice on this topic was not available. This study explored for the first time paediatricians' knowledge and practice about SIDS. Methods A cross-sectional survey was carried out between November 2012 and April 2013 in Catalonia, and reached 1202 paediatricians. The re

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is an unexplained death in infants, which usually occurs during sleep. The cause of SIDS remains unknown and multifactorial. In this regard, the diving reflex (DR), a peripheral subtype of trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR), is also hypothesized as one of the possible mechanisms for this condition. The TCR is a well-established neurogenic reflex that manifests as bradycardia, hypotension, apnea, and gastric hypermotility. The TCR shares many similarities with the DR, which is a significant physiological adaptation to withstand hypoxia during apnea in many animal

OBJECTIVE: In 1987, the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) rate in the United States was 1.2 per 1000 live births. By the year 2005, the SIDS rate had dropped more than half to approximately 0.5 per 1000 live births. In 1987, the risk of SIDS was 2.32 times greater for extremely premature infants compared with term infants. The objective of this analysis was to determine if with the falling SIDS rate there has been a change in the risk for SIDS among preterm infants.

Cardioviruses cause myocarditis and encephalomyelitis in rodents; human cardioviruses have not been ascribed to any disease. We screened 6,854 cerebrospinal fluid and 10 myocardium specimens from children and adults. A genotype 2 cardiovirus was detected from a child who died of sudden infant death syndrome, and 2 untypeable cardioviruses were detected from 2 children with meningitis.

Congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an inherited arrhythmia that can be sporadic or familial. It predisposes to sudden cardiac death by ventricular fibrillation, which can occur at any age, particularly in neonates. Recent postmortem molecular screening surveys have shown that 10 to 12% of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) cases were potentially related to congenital long QT syndrome. Current SIDS etiological surveys fail to diagnose LQTS. Specific questioning and electrocardiographic screening of first-degree relatives could greatly facilitate LQTS diagnosis. We propose adding these to sc

This article reviews the evidence for the current UK Department of Health recommendations for prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and suggests other factors that should be considered. The wording of the Department of Health recommendations for SIDS prevention has changed over the past 6 years, but the specific recommendations are largely consistent with the scientific evidence. The emphasis on thermal and illness factors and immunisation could be reduced. Bed sharing and sharing the parental bedroom should be given more emphasis. Two major recommendations need to be discussed in

P250R mutation in the FGFR3 gene also known as Muenke syndrome is associated with coronal craniosynostosis, sensorineural deafness, craniofacial, and digital abnormalities. We report a family with this mutation associated with sudden death in an affected newborn, most probably due to upper airway obstruction.
