Protection by ultraviolet A and B sunscreens against in situ dipyrimidine photolesions in human epidermis is comparable to protection against sunburn.

Sunscreens prevent sunburn and may also prevent skin cancer by protecting from ultraviolet-induced DNA damage. We assessed the ability of two sunscreens, with different spectral profiles, to inhibit DNA photodamage in human epidermis in situ. One formulation contained the established ultraviolet B filter octyl methoxycinnamate, whereas the other contained terephthalylidene dicamphor sulfonic acid, a new ultraviolet A filter. Both formulations had sun protection factors of 4 when assessed with solar simulating radiation in volunteers of skin type I/II. We tested the hypothesis that sun protecti

Effects of a sun protection program targeting elementary school children and their parents.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sun exposure in childhood is considered a risk factor for later development of skin cancer, so sun awareness programs targeting children have been developed. OBJECTIVE: To assess the benefits of involving parents at home in the sun protection program received by their children at school. METHOD: The existing "Sun and the Skin" program was enhanced in two ways. Parents were educated both about their child's program and with supplemental information. Also, sunscreen was distributed to each child. RESULTS: Certain methods of sun protection, particularly the use of sunscre

Influence of age, gender, educational level and self-estimation of skin type on sun exposure habits and readiness to increase sun protection.

BACKGROUND: Sun exposure habits and the propensity to undertake sun protection differ between individuals. Not least in primary prevention of skin cancer, aiming at reducing ultraviolet (UV) exposure, knowledge about these factors may be of importance. The aim of the present study was to investigate, in a primary health care (PHC) population, the relationship between sun exposure habits/sun protection behaviour/readiness to increase sun protection and gender, age, educational level and skin UV-sensitivity. METHODS: The baseline data from a previously performed RCT on skin cancer prevention wa

Sun Exposure Prevention Practices Within U.S. Naval Aviation.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational exposure to ultraviolet radiation is a critical concern for those serving in the U.S. Military. Work and mission requirements predispose members to significant sun exposure, while sun-protective behavior often comes second to mission accomplishment. Prior research implicated institutional practices and constraints as preventing the routine use of sun protection modalities, but no large-scale studies have assessed service members' perceptions regarding sun protection modalities available to them in their work environment or their daily sun protection practices. [Sun protection questionnaire in Buenos Aires adolescent athletes].

INTRODUCTION: Excessive sun exposure is the major environmental factor in the development of skin cancer. Adolescents who play outdoor sports are highly exposed to ultraviolet rays, which will result in cumulative photodamage with a higher risk of developing skin cancer in adulthood. OBJECTIVES: 1) To evaluate sun protection habits in Buenos Aires adolescent athletes. 2) To identify the characteristics of those adolescents who have developed sunburns. PATIENTS AND METHODS: An observational descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out using a voluntary anonymous written and self-reported

Sun Protection Policies and Practices in Preschool and Elementary Schools in Andalusia (Spain).

Sun exposure in childhood is a major risk factor for the development of skin cancer as an adult. School children spend much of their time outdoors exposed to ultraviolet radiation during recreational and sports activities. Skin cancer incidence tripled from 1978 to 2002 in Spain. Andalusia, the largest and sunniest region of Spain, lacks data on the sun protection measures taken in schools. To address this deficit, the aim of this study was to determine photoprotection practices and policies in preschools and primary schools in Andalusia. This descriptive study involved the administration of a

"Buen Rayito Study": awareness, attitudes and behavior of teenagers to sunlight through a web based system in Spain.

BACKGROUND: The exponential rise in cutaneous cancers underscores the need to promote primary prevention, emphasising exposure to ultraviolet radiation as the main modifiable risk factor. Children and adolescents are especially vulnerable to radiation. OBJECTIVES: Our objectives were to determine the knowledge and behavior of a Spanish adolescent population in relation to sun exposure thorough a web-based system. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 1525 school students aged 12-15 yrs. Students completed the survey via the website, with 23 questions and three information blocks on: p

New Strategies in the Prevention of Actinic Keratosis: A Critical Review.

Actinic keratosis (AK) or lesions of epidermal dysplasia occurring in skin chronically exposed to solar radiation is very prevalent in lighter skin persons, with chronic long-term sun exposure being the major risk factor. With an aging population it is expected that the prevalence of AK will further increase. AK can progress to nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and is a public health concern. Six leading dermatologists with expertise in AK and NMSC from Germany met to discuss the nature of the disease and the prevention and treatment strategies available to dermatologists today. While cosmetic su

Remedies for common family ailments: 5. Sunscreen creams and lotions.

Prolonged exposure to strong sunlight significantly increases the risk of skin cancer. Sunscreens provide useful protection from sunburn if correctly used. Some sunscreens contain chemical compounds which work by absorbing UVB wavelengths. Others contain chemicals which act as reflectants of UVA waves, eg titanium dioxide. Stars on the packet indicate how much UVA protection the product provides-the more stars, the more protection. Products are labelled with their sunscreen protection factor (SPF). The higher the factor, the greater the protection. Products used on children should have an SPF

Spectral Homeostasis - The Fundamental Requirement for an Ideal Sunscreen.

Sunscreen application to UV-exposed skin is promoted to prevent skin cancer and sun damage, within a comprehensive photoprotection strategy that also includes sun avoidance and wearing UV protective clothing. The benefits of sunscreen are verified in preventing sunburn but appear to be largely presumptive in skin cancer prevention. Contemporary science establishes UVA as a primary driver of melanoma and photoaging. Consequentially, the traditional UVB-skewed protection of sunscreens provides an intellectual and logical explanation for rising skin cancer rates and, in particular, their failure

A sun holiday is a sunburn holiday.

Many people take holidays in sunny locations with the express aim of sunbathing. This may result in sunburn, which is a risk factor for skin cancer. We investigated 25 Danish sun seekers during a week's holiday in the Canary Islands. The percentage of body surface area with sunburn was determined by daily skin examinations by the same observer. Erythemally effective ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure was assessed with time-stamped personal dosimeters worn on the wrist. Volunteers reported their clothing cover and sunscreen use in diaries, and this information was used to determine body site-

Predictors of sun protection behaviours and sunburn among Australian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sun exposure and sunburn increase individuals' risk of skin cancer. It is especially important to prevent sunburn in childhood due to the higher relative risk of skin cancer across the life span compared to risk associated with sunburn episodes experienced later in life. This study examined demographic and attitudinal factors associated with engagement in a range of sun protection behaviours (wearing a hat, wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade, and staying indoors during the middle of the day) and the frequency of sunburn among Western Australian adolescents

UV-Induced Skin Cancer Knowledge, Sun Exposure, and Tanning Behavior among University Students: Investigation of an Opportunity Sample of German University Students.

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the most important risk factor for developing skin cancer. University students can be considered as a particularly high-risk group for long- and short-term adverse effects of UVR due to intensive solar UVR exposure and high rates of sunburn. While validated questionnaires for assessing solar UVR exposure and sun protection behavior are available in German, a questionnaire for assessing the level of knowledge about this topic is still missing. We conducted a literature search for cross-sectional studies assessing skin cancer and sun protection knowledge among univ
