Navigation System-Assisted vs Freehand Cannulated Screw Fixation for Femoral Neck Fractures: Protocol for a Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of femoral neck fractures (FNFs) is increasing, primarily due to an aging population and an increased incidence of high-energy trauma. Although fixation with three cannulated screws (TCS) is the most commonly used surgical technique, it has limitations, including suboptimal operative accuracy and dependence on repeated intraoperative fluoroscopy. In response, advanced navigation systems have been developed to improve surgical precision and outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled superiority trial will compare surgical outcomes betwee

Navigation-supported and sonographically-controlled fine-needle puncture in soft tissues of the neck.

In surgery, sonography has been a well-accepted means of orientation for years. The immediate vicinity of many vital structures in the head and neck region calls for a very exact visualization of the surgical instrument in the 2-D ultrasonic picture. We report on the development of a new method for navigation-supported and sonographically-controlled fine-needle puncture in soft tissues of the neck. Our system comprises a navigated ultrasound probe, a navigated fine-puncture needle and a coordinate sensor. A personal computer with specially-developed software assists calibration and surgical ap

Learning how to resurface cam-type femoral heads with acceptable accuracy and precision: the role of computed tomography-based navigation.

BACKGROUND: Resurfacing arthroplasty for cam-type deformities, which are a common cause of early osteoarthritis, is a technically demanding operation. Like any other arthroplasty, it requires both accuracy and precision. On the basis of the results of series reported by expert surgeons, we considered it desirable that this operation should be performed within +/-10 degrees of the desired angular orientation and +/-6 mm of entry-point translation in 95% of hips. Technological aids are now available to help surgeons achieve that level of accuracy. Three models of cam-type hips of increasing seve

NIR-II fluorescence projection technology for augmented-reality surgical navigation.

NIR-II fluorescence imaging provides superior tissue penetration and clarity, yet its clinical use in surgical navigation is hindered by a critical workflow issue. Surgeons must divert their attention between the operative field and external monitors, increasing cognitive load and disrupting procedures. Current strategies have failed to resolve this fundamental problem. Here, we developed a co-axial NIR-II fluorescence projection navigation system to enable real-time, in situ visualization. This system creates an intraoperative augmented reality by directly projecting high-precision, pseudocol

Adjustment of leg length using imageless navigation THA software without a femoral tracker.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment of leg length discrepancy is an important factor influencing the outcome of total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, leg length discrepancy after THA has been reported to be associated with inferior clinical outcome in previous studies. A new version of the imageless navigation software "OrthoPilot THAplus" has been developed to assess the leg length adjustment and offset value. The clear advantage of this system is the elimination of the need for femoral pin insertion, which is associated with potential complications and additional surgical invasion. METHODS: In this stu
