[The clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of alcoholism patients who have committed illegal acts].

Clinical and statistical surveys of 330 patients with alcoholism who made illegal acts when they were alcohol-intoxicated have revealed that there is a relationship of the frequency and degree of illegal acts with clinical progressive features of a diseases and sociodemographic characteristics of patients and defined organizational measures for their prevention. The most severe illegal acts are made by patients with Stage II alcoholism with a progressive course and a short disease duration. The changed pattern of intoxication with its involvement into the clinical picture of epileptoidicity ph

[Mitral valve prolapse in residents of different altitudes in the Tien Shan and Pamirs].

A study was made of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) in 1197 Kirghiz mountain-dwellers aged 16 to 22 living constantly at different altitudes of the Tien Shan and the Pamirs. MVP was detected in 24 persons (10.9%) living at an altitude of 3600-4200 m above sea level using the method of echocardiography. At middle altitudes (2020 m) it was detected in 23 persons (3.1%) and at foothills (760 m) in 4 persons (1.7%). It was shown that MVP in inhabitants at high altitudes was accompanied by more pronounced subjective symptomatology, frequently with various rhythm disorders, hypertrophy of the right vent

[Malaria in Tadjikistan: from control to elimination].

In the past three years, a notable progress has been made in the control of malaria, as suggested by a drastic reduction in malaria morbidity and in the number of active foci. To fulfill the set tasks, there is a need for continuous financing of antimalaria measures by the country's Government, the Global Fund, WHO, and other sponsors. In the Republic of Tadjikistan, there are prerequisites for achieving the elimination of tropical malaria by 2010; however, it is necessary to collaborate with the Islamic State of Afghanistan for prophylactic measures to be implemented to prevent importation of

Tuberculosis disease burden trends, drivers, and projections to 2050 in China and the wider Central Asian region, 1990-2023.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading infectious killer, with high burden concentrated in China and wider Central Asia. Integrated long-term trend analysis and forecasting for this region are scarce. We aimed to quantify TB burden trends, drivers, inequalities, and 2050 projections across China and wider Central Asia (1990-2023). METHODS: We used Global Burden of Disease 2023 data to estimate age-standardized incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Joinpoint, age-period-cohort, decomposition, and Bayesian APC models were applied. Socioeconomic i

Genetic variability of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in Russia and Central Asia.

Hyalomma marginatum ticks (449 pools, 4787 ticks in total) collected in European Russia and Dermacentor niveus ticks (100 pools, 1100 ticks in total) collected in Kazakhstan were screened by ELISA for the presence of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Virus antigen was found in 10.2 and 3.0 % of the pools, respectively. RT-PCR was used to recover partial sequences of the CCHFV small (S) genome segment from seven pools of antigen-positive H. marginatum ticks, one pool of D. niveus ticks, four CCFH cases and four laboratory virus strains. Additionally, the entire S genome segments o

[Efficacy of various antimicrobial agents in the treatment of epidemic typhoid fever].

During superepidemic of a typhoid fever in Tadjikistan the efficiency of application in clinics and of 14 antimicrobial agents representing almost all basic chemical classes was investigated. Remarkable variation of frequency and type of S. typhi resistance to these preparations up to epidemic and especially in its process was demonstrated. The absence of absolute (100%) efficacy of the investigated agents in vivo and in vitro was shown. The reasons of low efficacy of etiotropic treatment of the patients with typhoid fever are analysed.

Gender-related factors associated with delayed diagnosis of tuberculosis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Tuberculosis (TB), a preventable and treatable disease, yearly affects millions of people and takes more than a million lives. Recognizing the symptoms and obtaining the correct diagnosis are vital steps towards treatment and cure. How timely a person with TB gets diagnosed may be influenced by biological differences between the sexes, and factors that are linked to the person's gender, in the context of the prevailing gender norms. According to our hypothesis, gender-related factors contribute to delays in the diagnosis of TB. We investigated four countries (Georgia, Kazakhstan, Republic of M

Physical inactivity in nine European and Central Asian countries: an analysis of national population-based survey results.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases. However, recent and systematically obtained national-level data to guide policy responses are often lacking, especially in countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. This article describes physical inactivity patterns among adults in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Republic of Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. METHODS: Data were collected using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire drawing nationally representative samples of adults in each country. The national prevalenc

Resurgence of diphtheria.

Following the introduction of routine immunization with diphtheria toxoid in the 1940s and 1950s, diphtheria incidence declined dramatically in countries of the industrialized world. At the beginning of the 1980s many of these countries were progressing toward elimination of the disease. However, since the mid-1980s there has been a striking resurgence of diphtheria in several countries of Eastern Europe. For 1993, WHO received reports of 15,211 diphtheria cases in Russia and 2,987 cases in Ukraine. The main reasons for the return of diphtheria in these countries were: decreasing immunization

Progress and Challenges in Measles and Rubella Elimination in the WHO European Region.

The elimination of both measles and rubella remains a priority for all 53 Member States of the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region. To provide an update on the epidemiological status of measles and rubella in the Region, we reviewed surveillance data on both diseases for 2023 submitted monthly by national surveillance institutions. We analyzed the cases of measles and rubella for 2023 by age group, case classification, vaccination, hospitalization, and importation status and report on measles-related deaths. In 2023, 60,860 measles cases, including 13 fatal cases, were reported in

Epidemiology and control of echinococcosis in central Asia, with particular reference to the People's Republic of China.

At least 270 million people (58% of the total population) are at risk of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in Central Asia including areas of Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and western China. The annual surgical incidence rate in Uzbekistan and Tadjikistan has been estimated to be as high as 25-27 cases/100,000 with the highest prevalence reaching 10% (range from 0.8 to 11.9%) in some Tibetan communities in western China. Echinococcus transmission in the region is largely associated with social factors including limited community kn

Redressing the epidemics of opioid overdose and HIV among people who inject drugs in Central Asia: the need for a syndemic approach.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that opioid overdose and HIV infection are burgeoning intertwined epidemics among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Central Asia. To date, however, research on overdose and its associations with HIV risks among PWID in Central Asia remains virtually absent. This paper aims to provide a regional overview of the hidden epidemic of overdose and how it is linked to HIV among PWID in Central Asia, using a syndemic framework that is guided by risk environment research. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature search of peer-reviewed publications an

Lipodystrophy in Central Asia: A Regional Literature Review with a Case Series of Congenital and Acquired Generalized Lipodystrophy.

Background: Lipodystrophy syndromes are a group of rare disorders characterized by partial or generalized loss of adipose tissue, severe insulin resistance, and multiple metabolic complications. Despite increasing global awareness, lipodystrophy remains underrepresented in the published literature from Central Asia, and its true regional prevalence remains unknown. This study presents a case series of patients from Central Asia with congenital and acquired generalized lipodystrophy, reviews the existing regional literature, and determines challenges and future directions to improve lipodystrop

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in Central, Eastern, and South-eastern Asia.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), caused by Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), is endemic in Africa, Asia, and Europe, but CCHF epidemiology and epizootiology is only rudimentarily defined for most regions. Here we summarize what is known about CCHF in Central, Eastern, and South-eastern Asia. Searching multiple international and country-specific databases using a One Health approach, we defined disease risk and burden through identification of CCHF cases, anti-CCHFV antibody prevalence, and CCHFV isolation from vector ticks. We identified 2313 CCHF cases that occurred in 194

[Efficiency of KAT-quick P.f. test (KAT medical, SAR) among the populations of drug-resistant parasites].

The KAT-Quick P.f. test (KAT Medical, South African Republic) is based on the detection of protein HPR II produced by trophozoites and young gametocytes of P. falciparum. This test was conducted by the authors in the distribution areas of P. falciparum strains differing in the spectrum of drug resistance. Five hundred and forty-nine blood samples from febrile patients in Vietnam (n=84), Sierra Leone (n=41), Nigeria (n=14), Tanzania (n=8), Kenya (n=5), and Tadjikistan (n=397) were tested. Microscopy served as a primary control. Detection of P. falciparum DNA, using polymerase chain reaction (PC

[Clinical features of tropical malaria in children in Tadjikistan].

The paper considers the age-specific features of the clinical course of tropical malaria in children in Tadjikistan. Tropic malaria in children, those of young age in particular, is characterized by the acute onset, polymorphism of clinical manifestations, high fever of mainly abnormal type, and hepatosplenomegaly. Tropical malaria takes the most severe course in children of the first three years. The severity of the disease is due to the development of the toxic syndrome, cerebral disorders, and hemolytic anemia. An association has been seen between the onset of etiotropic treatment and the d
