Immediate and short-term effects of kinesiotaping on muscular activity, mobility, strength and pain after rotator cuff surgery: a crossover clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Kinesiotape (KT) is widely used in musculoskeletal rehabilitation as an adjuvant to treatment, but minimal evidence supports its use. The aim of this study is to determine the immediate and short-term effects of shoulder KT on muscular activity, mobility, strength and pain after rotator cuff surgery. METHODS: Thirty-nine subjects who underwent shoulder rotator cuff surgery were tested 6 and 12 weeks post-surgery, without tape, with KT and with a sham tape (ST). KT and ST were applied in a randomized order. For each condition, the muscular activity of the upper trapezius, three par

[Therapeutic effect of inosine in Tourette syndrome and its possible mechanism of action].

We found incidentally 3 years ago that inosine relieved the symptoms in a patient with Tourette syndrome. Since then, 36 patients suffered from Tourette syndrome were exclusively treated with inosine, 50-90 mg/kg daily in divided doses. The vocal and non-vocal tic attacks were counted either by the observation of an examiner or with a video-tape record. The clinical status was scored as the sum of the number of various tic attacks recorded during a period of 60 minutes (video-tape record) or 20 minutes (direct observation). According to the scores obtained from double blind cross-over trial (1

The effect of low-Dye taping on plantar pressures, during gait, in subjects with navicular drop exceeding 10 mm.

STUDY DESIGN: A preintervention and postintervention, repeated-measures experimental design. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the immediate effect of low-Dye taping on peak and mean plantar pressures during gait in subjects with navicular drop exceeding 10 mm. BACKGROUND: Low-Dye taping is commonly used to support the longitudinal and transverse arches of the foot in an attempt to reduce the effects of symptoms associated with excessive pronation. Plantar pressure measurement has been used as an indirect indicator of pronation during gait. METHOD AND MEASURES: The right foot of 60 subjects was tes

Assessing active thumb palmar and radial abduction in persons with thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis via intermetacarpal distance methods: an exploration of validity, reliability, and precision.

BACKGROUND: Thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis (CMC1 OA) is a prevalent and disabling rheumatological condition. One impairment commonly described in the context of CMC1 OA is a loss of radial (RABD) and palmar (PABD) thumb abduction. Traditional goniometric measures are unreliable and poorly correlated with functional limitations. The intermetacarpal distance (IMD) method, using digital calipers, shows promise for better reliability, but its validity and the feasibility of using tape measures remain untested. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the construct validity, test-retest reliability, and preci

Sexual intercourse and angina pectoris.

Thirty men and five women aged 36-70 years with angina were questioned about their sexual activity. Twenty-nine (83%) had intercourse more than once a week and six (17%) abstained. In 19 (65%) angina occurred during intercourse, and four also complained of palpitation. Fourteen patients underwent 24-hour ECG (electrocardiogram) tape-recordings before and after beta-blockade, and indicated the time of intercourse in diary cards. Tape analysis before beta-blockade revealed an average maximal 24-hour heart rate of 124.0 +/- 7.2 beats/min, and 122.2 +/- 7.1 beats/min during intercourse. Two patien

Evaluating the effects of two different kinesiology taping techniques on shoulder pain and function in patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders which predominantly affects women and has a prevalence as high as 1 in 5,000 individuals. Hypermobile EDS (hEDS) is the most common subtype of EDS and is characterized by multi-joint pain, particularly in large joints such as the shoulder. Physical therapy is often utilized to address the pain, physical impairments, and functional loss in patients with EDS. Kinesiology Tape (KT) is an intervention commonly used by physical therapists for treating shoulder pain and dysfunction. Studies related to the ef

Instrumental assessment of velopharyngeal closure for speech.

The presence of a palatal cleft at birth should not prevent good speech production in most children provided they have (1) appropriate surgical intervention to close the palate at or around the child's first birthday, (2) careful monitoring of speech development throughout childhood, (3) speech therapy when needed, and (4) secondary surgical or speech-prosthetic intervention when needed. When managed carefully by an experienced, well-prepared multidisciplinary team that applies the criteria listed above, ~70% of children with nonsyndromic palatal clefts will have no significant difficulties wi

A quantitative and qualitative exploration of client-therapist interaction and engagement in treatment in an alcohol service.

Studies have suggested that differences in the effectiveness of therapists may be related to the therapist's ability to maintain a facilitative stance in the face of client resistance or hostility. The current study, examined a sample of audiotaped sessions from Hyams, Cartwright, and Spratley's (1996) study of engagement in an alcohol treatment service in an attempt to see whether the therapists' effectiveness at engaging clients in treatment was related to client-therapist interaction in assessment interviews. It was hypothesized that there would be (1) more overall negative interpersonal be

The effect of fear on paralinguistic aspects of speech in patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia.

The present study investigated the effect of fear on paralinguistic aspects of speech in patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia (N = 25). An experiment was conducted that comprised two modules: Autobiographical Talking and Script Talking. Each module consisted of two emotional conditions: Fearful and Happy. Speech was recorded digitally and analyzed using PRAAT, a computer program designed to extract paralinguistic measures from digitally recorded spoken sound. In addition to subjective fear, several speech characteristics were measured as a reflection of psychophysiology: rat

Spectrum effects of subglottal pressure variation in professional baritone singers.

The audio signal from five professional baritones was analyzed by means of spectrum analysis. Each subject sang syllables [pae] and [pa] from loudest to softest phonation at fundamental frequencies representing 25%, 50%, and 75% of his total range. Ten subglottal pressures, equidistantly spaced between highest and lowest, were selected for analysis along with the corresponding production of the vowels. The levels of the first formant and singer's formant were measured as a function of subglottal pressure. Averaged across subjects, vowels, and F0, a 10-dB increase at 600 Hz was accompanied by a

The displaced equine soft palate as a source of abnormal respiratory noise during expiration.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: To develop the technique of respiratory sound analysis for the diagnosis of dorsal displacement of the equine soft palate. OBJECTIVES: To show that 1) the displaced soft palate can spontaneously vibrate in the presence of expiratory airflow; 2) the observed frequency of vibration can be detected in respiratory sound recordings; and 3) the frequency of vibrations measured in cadaveric specimens are similar to those obtained from audio spectra in exercising horses with DDSP. METHODS: Palatal movements and respiratory sounds were recorded from artificially ventilat

Predicting stuttering from linguistic factors for German speakers in two age groups.

UNLABELLED: Brown's factors [J. Speech Disorders 10 (1945) 181] predict the likely loci of disfluency in English-speaking adults who stutter. A word is more likely to be stuttered for these speakers if it is a content word, starts with a consonant, is positioned at the beginning of a sentence, and if it is a long word. These same factors were examined in native German-speaking children and adults who stutter. Speech data of 15 German adults and 17 children were coded according to Brown's factors. For the adult group, it was predicted that words starting with consonants would not lead to as muc

Failure Rate After Shoulder Stabilization Procedures in the Military With Use of Knotless Suture Tape: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Biomechanical studies have demonstrated improved loading properties and tissue tear-through of suture tapes as compared with suture, suggesting that a tape construct in labral repair may reduce failure rates. However, comparative clinical studies are lacking. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to determine the rate of recurrent instability after arthroscopic stabilization and compare survivability and risk factors for failure in a persistently high-demand military population. The null hypothesis was that there would be no difference between the failure rates of arthroscopic stabi
