Technetium-99m sestamibi scintigraphy has become a valuable tool in locating parathyroid glands in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. From 1980 to 1992, we found false negative results from Technetium (Tc)-99m abdominal scans in seven children with massive gastrointestinal bleeding from ectopic gastric mucosae. Radioimmunoscintigraphy (RIS) with technetium-99m labelled SM3, a monoclonal antibody reacting with a polymorphic epithelial mucin glycoprotein core antigen, is evaluated. No adverse effects or thyroid uptake were observed. Studies in 45 patients (one twice) had a sensitivity for gynaecological malignancy of 100% (35/35) and a specificity of 73% (8/11), giving an overall accuracy of 93% (43/46). These results have led to the routine adoption of 99mTc RIS in the management of patients suspected of or having primary or recurrent gynaecological cancer.

Primary hyperparathyroidism, although often silent clinically, may lead to significant morbidity if it remains untreated. In more than 95% of all cases the cause is a parathyroid adenoma or glandular hyperplasia. Regression of disease follows successful surgical excision of the abnormal parathyroid gland. Tc-pertechnetate scintigraphy was performed in 81 infants and children, clinically suspected to have Meckel's diverticulum with ectopic gastric mucosa. A canine model simulating Meckel's diverticulum was used to evaluate the effects of pentagastrin, glucagon, and a combination of the two hormones on the gastrointestinal localization of 99mTc.
