Sensitization to reactive textile dyes in patients with contact dermatitis.

Reactive dyes are used especially for colouring natural fibres (cotton, silk and wool) that are widely used in Western countries, particularly Italy, in the production of clothes. The aim of our study was to investigate sensitization to the most commonly used reactive textile dyes in patients undergoing patch tests, and to assess the clinical relevance of contact sensitization to these dyes. 1813 consecutive patients underwent patch tests with the GIRDCA standard series and an additional textile series of 12 reactive dyes. 18 of these patients were sensitized to reactive dyes (0.99%) (4 only t

The characteristics of respiratory ill health of wool textile workers.

The relations of lung function and chest radiographic appearances with exposure to inspirable dust were examined in 634 workers in five wool textile mills in west Yorkshire, randomly selected to represent fully the range of current exposures to wool mill dust. Most of these workers could be categorised into three large sex and ethnic groups; European men, Asian men, and Asian women. Exposures to inspirable dust had been measured at a previous survey and time spent in current job, and in the industry were used as surrogates for lifetime cumulative exposures. Chest radiographs were interpreted o

[Inhalation anthrax in a textile worker: non-fatal course].

The development of dyspnea, hematemesis, melaena and symptoms of shock following an apparently minor infection of the upper respiratory tract in a 37-year-old textile worker marked the onset of an acute threatening illness. Pleuracentesis revealed 3.8 l of hemorrhagic exudate. Chest x-rays showed a significant increase in mediastinal width. Conspicuous laboratory findings were hemoconcentration, anemia and leukocytosis, and increased serum activities for SGOT, SGPT and alkaline phosphatase. The infection occurred during an industrial epidemic of 24 cases of cutaneous anthrax, and the diagnosis

Engineering Thermobifida fusca cutinase variants for the sustainable recycling of PET from cotton-blended textiles.

INTRODUCTION: Recycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from cotton-blended fabrics is constrained by substrate access. Textile PET is more crystalline and occluded than the amorphous film on which most PET hydrolases are optimized, and whether engineered enzymes retain their advantage as substrate complexity rises remains untested. METHODS: Six Thermobifida fusca cutinase 2 (TfCut2) variants were designed by structure-guided modelling and machine-learning prediction. Activity was screened with p-nitrophenyl butyrate (pNPB) and on PET film across 35-70 °C and pH 7.0-8.5, then assayed on pure

In vitro study on the transmission of multidrug-resistant bacteria from textiles to pig skin.

BACKGROUND: The survival of microorganisms on textiles and specifically on healthcare professionals' (HCP) attire has been demonstrated in several studies. The ability of microorganisms to adhere and remain on textiles for up to hours or days raises questions as to their possible role in transmission from textile to skin via HCP to patients. AIM: To evaluate the presence, survival and transmission of different multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) from HCP attire onto skin. METHODS: Three MDRB [methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA); vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE);

Human health risks due to exposure to inorganic and organic chemicals from textiles: A review.

It is well known that a number of substances used in the textile industry can mean not only environmental, but also health problems. The scientific literature regarding potential adverse health effects of chemical substances in that industry is mainly related with human exposure during textile production. However, information about exposure of consumers is much more limited. Although most research on the health effects of chemicals in textiles concern allergic skin reactions, contact allergy is not the only potential human health problem. In this paper, we have reviewed the current scientific

Life cycle assessment of alternatives for industrial textile recycling.

The $882 billion textile trade in 2021 poses environmental concerns, highlighting the importance of encouraging a circular economy to attain sustainable textiles. Therefore, policies must prioritize textile recycling, particularly in developing countries, and sharing information throughout the value chain. This research aims to explore the potential environmental benefits of two industrial recycling processes for textile residues versus the traditional waste management and production process through a life cycle assessment applying the ReCiPe method at midpoint and endpoint levels focusing on

Textile Functionalization Using LTA and FAU Zeolitic Materials.

COVID-19 has drawn worldwide attention to the need for personal protective equipment. Face masks can be transformed from passive filters into active protection. For this purpose, it is sufficient to apply materials with oligodynamic effect to the fabric of the masks, which makes it possible to destroy infectious agents that have fallen on the mask with aerosol droplets from the air stream. Zeolites themselves are not oligodynamic materials, but can serve as carriers for nanoparticles of metals and/or compounds of silver, zinc, copper, and other materials with biocidal properties. Such a method

Degradation Phenomena on "Homemade" Explanted Aortic Textile Endografts.

OBJECTIVE: In the 1990s, the concept of "homemade" endografts (EGs) using commercially available materials was proposed in clinical practice for endovascular abdominal aortic repair (EVAR). The aim of this study was to analyse the ageing phenomena of these EGs in light of explant analyses. METHODS: The study focused on five explanted homemade EGs collected from 2012 to 2014. The explants were assessed in accordance with the ISO 9001/13485 certified standard protocol, which included naked eye evaluation, organic remnant cleaning, and microscopic and endoscopic examinations and analysis (magnif
