Experiments in dogs with striatal deficiency revealed an important role of dopaminergic mechanisms in establishment of the situation conditioning. A rearrangement of the background unit activity of the caudate and thalamic nuclei preceding presentation of a conditioned stimulus and correlating with correct accomplishment of a motor task, was revealed in cats. Afferents from intralaminar and ventral nuclei of the thalamus were shown. Participation of striatal, nigral and thalamic levels in systemic organisation of motor conditioning is discussed.

During propofol-induced general anesthesia, alpha rhythms measured using electroencephalography undergo a striking shift from posterior to anterior, termed anteriorization, where the ubiquitous waking alpha is lost and a frontal alpha emerges. The functional significance of alpha anteriorization and the precise brain regions contributing to the phenomenon are a mystery. While posterior alpha is thought to be generated by thalamocortical circuits connecting nuclei of the sensory thalamus with their cortical partners, the thalamic origins of the propofol-induced alpha remain poorly understood. The presubiculum contains head direction cells that are crucial for spatial orientation. Here, we examined the connectivity and strengths of thalamic inputs to presubicular layer 3 neurons projecting to the medial entorhinal cortex in the mouse. We recorded pairs of projection neurons and interneurons while optogenetically stimulating afferent fibers from the anterior thalamic nuclei. Thalamic input differentially affects presubicular neurons: layer 3 pyramidal neurons and fast-spiking parvalbumin-expressing interneurons are directly and monosynaptically activated, with depressing dynamics, wh

Background. Neuroimaging studies of spinal cord injury (SCI) have mostly examined the functional organization of the cortex, with only limited focus on the subcortical substrates of the injury. However, thalamus is an important modulator and sensory relay that requires investigation at a subnuclei level to gain insight into the neuroplasticity following SCI. Objective. To use resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine the functional connectivity (FC) of thalamic subnuclei in complete SCI patients. Methods. A seed-based connectivity analysis was applied for 3 thalamic subnuc

To understand better how the brainstem may influence thalamocortical activity, we have examined the projection patterns of different brainstem nuclei to the thalamic reticular nucleus. Iontophoretic injections of biotinylated dextran were made into various nuclei of the brainstem (superior colliculus, periaqueductal grey matter, parabrachial nucleus, pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus, laterodorsal tegmental nucleus, substantia nigra, ventral tegmental area, and locus coeruleus) of Sprague-Dawley rats by using stereotaxic coordinates. Our results show that afferents from each brainstem nucleus

Hexanucleotide repeat expansion (HRE) within C9orf72 is the most common genetic cause of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Thalamic atrophy occurs in both sporadic and familial FTD but is thought to distinctly affect HRE carriers. Separately, emerging evidence suggests widespread derepression of transposable elements (TEs) in the brain in several neurodegenerative diseases, including C9orf72 HRE-mediated FTD (C9-FTD). Whether TE activation can be measured in peripheral blood and how the reduction in peripheral C9orf72 expression observed in HRE carriers relates to atrophy and clinical impairment

Neurochemical and key connectional characteristics of the anterior entopeduncular nucleus (Enta) of the turtle (Testudo horsfieldi) were studied by axonal tracing techniques and immunohistochemistry of parvalbumin, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). We showed that the Enta, which is located within the dorsal peduncle of the lateral forebrain bundle (Pedd), has roughly topographically organized reciprocal connections with the dorsal thalamic visual nuclei, the nucleus rotundus (Rot) and dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (GLd). The Enta receives projections fro

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We know remarkably little about the mechanisms underlying cortical activation. Such mechanisms might be better understood by studying the effect of well-localized lesions on the cortical activations in simple paradigms.
METHODS: We used H(2)(15)O and positron emission tomography to measure regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) at rest and during hand vibration in 7 patients with unilateral thalamic lesion involving the ventroposterior (VP) somatosensory thalamic relay nuclei. We compared the results with those obtained in 6 patients with thalamic lesions sparing the VP n

INTRODUCTION: Glymphatic dysfunction is implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its mechanism remains unclear. This study investigated the associations of the analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS) index, brain reserve, and cognitive outcomes across the AD continuum.
METHODS: This study enrolled two cohorts from the local hospital (n = 95) and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI; n = 178). We calculated the diffusion tensor image ALPS to assess the whole-brain glymphatic function and evaluated its associations with cognition and brain structure.
RESULTS: A higher

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in thalamic structure and function are a consistent feature of psychosis spectrum disorders including schizophrenia (SZ), schizoaffective (SAD), and bipolar disorder with psychosis (BDP), yet the extent to which specific thalamic nuclei differ across diagnoses, and how these differences relate to cognition and psychopathology, remains unclear. We examined these questions, focusing on two nuclei - the mediodorsal (MD) and pulvinar (Pu), among individuals with psychosis (n = 2160) in the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes consortium.

The morphology of nucleus rotundus, a visual thalamic nucleus, was investigated in one species of reptiles. Caiman crocodilus, using Nisst stained material in transverse, sagittal, and horizontal planes. The topographical location of nucleus rotundus and its relationship to surrounding thalamic nuclear groups are described. Nucleus rotundus in Caiman can be subdivided into three areas: (1) an outer shell; (2) an inner core; and (3) a cell poor zone located between the shell and core. Most rotundal core neurons were round, fusiform, triangular, pear-shaped, or elliptical. Core neurons were not

1. The cytoarchitecture and the exact borders of the thalamic ventralis intermedius (Vim) nucleus of humans as originally delineated by Hassler (17) have been studied on the basis of stereotaxic coordinates correlated with Nissl- and Golgi-impregnated sections, using a microscopic image analyzer. 2. The Vim nucleus forms part of a relatively "cell-sparse zone" which includes the other ventrolateral thalamic subnuclei. It is distinguished by the presence of darkly stained, large and medium sized, angular cells with areas of approximately 500-1,000 microns 2 and 300-400 microns 2, respectively,

The diencephalon of the vervet monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) is described and compared with that of other primates, particularly the macaque monkey (Macaca mulatta). In the vervet monkey, the thalamus is divided into six nuclear groups: anterior, midline, medial, dorsolateral, ventrolateral and posterior. The anterior nuclear group shows a regressive nucleus anterodorsalis and a poorly defined demarcation between the nuclei anteromedialis and anteroventralis. There is a large interthalamic adhesion in which the ventral region containing nuclei centralis medialis, interventralis and reuniens,

OBJECTIVE: Although magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) at the ventral intermediate (VIM) thalamic nucleus is a novel and effective treatment for medication-refractory essential tremor (ET), it is unclear how the ablation lesion affects functional activity. The current study sought to evaluate the functional impact of MRgFUS thalamotomy in patients with ET, as well as to investigate the relationship between neuronal activity changes and tremor control.
METHODS: This study included 30 patients with ET who underwent MRgFUS thalamotomy with a 6-month follow-up involving MRI and

Tremor is the most prevalent movement disorder in adults. Patients who are refractory to medical management can explore surgical intervention. Deep-brain stimulation (DBS) and radiofrequency thalamotomy (RFT) are surgical procedures for intractable tremor that target the ventralis intermedius (VIM) nucleus to relieve contralateral tremor. For patients who are not candidates for surgical procedures, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a minimally invasive management option for tremor relief. SRS has been used for the elderly, those considered high surgical risk for other surgical procedures, tho

The forebrain somatic sensory locus for input from sensors on the surface of an active prosthesis is an important component of the Brain Machine Interface. We now review the neuronal responses to controlled cutaneous stimuli and the sensations produced by Threshold Stimulation at Microampere current levels (TMIS) in such a locus, the human thalamic Ventral Caudal nucleus (Vc). The responses of these neurons to tactile stimuli mirror those for the corresponding class of tactile mechanoreceptor fiber in the peripheral nerve, and TMIS can evoke sensations like those produced by the stimuli that o

New data on neural organization of the human thalamic parafascicular (CM-Pf) complex were revealed with microelectrode technique during 11 stereotaxic operations in alert diskinetic patients suffering from the tonic forms of spasmodic torticollis. The data were obtained as follows: the functional heterogeneity in cellular organization of the human CM-Pf thalamic nuclei and the existence of three (A, B and C) different types of neurons in these thalamic nuclei: with the irregular discharges (A-type, 18%); with short (10-20 ms) bursts characterised by unstable rhythmic 2-5 Hz pattern and by the

Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is a severe neurological disorder caused by vitamin B1 deficiency. The aim of the study was to analyse MRI findings typical for this disease and to evaluate the significance of their correlations with clinical symptoms. Magnetic resonance images and clinical features of 12 patients with WE were analysed. The patients underwent MR imaging within 3-14 days after onset of clinical symptoms. In 7 of 12 patients MR imaging showed symmetrical diencephalic and midbrain lesions. Postcontrast T1-weighted images from 5 of 9 patients examined during the initial 6 days of acut
