A century of exercise physiology: concepts that ignited the study of human thermoregulation. Part 2: physiological measurements.

In this, the second of four historical reviews on human thermoregulation during exercise, we examine the research techniques developed by our forebears. We emphasise calorimetry and thermometry, and measurements of vasomotor and sudomotor function. Since its first human use (1899), direct calorimetry has provided the foundation for modern respirometric methods for quantifying metabolic rate, and remains the most precise index of whole-body heat exchange and storage. Its alternative, biophysical modelling, relies upon many, often dubious assumptions. Thermometry, used for >300 y to assess deep-

[A method for the combined treatment of cancer of the esophagus and cardia by using intensive preoperative gamma teletherapy and intracavity hyperthermia].

Local intracavitary hyperthermia and simultaneous intensive-concentrated irradiation were used in 23 patients with esophageal cancer and 64 cases of cardioesophageal malignancy prior to surgery. The procedure for thermometry is described. Hyperthermia was carried out after the second and fifth (out of six) radiation fractions, thermotolerability being taken into account. Complete and partial response rate was 72.7% in the study group compared to 56.5% in controls. The volume fraction of viable parenchyma dropped to 2.1 +/- 0.2% (16.6 +/- 1.5% in controls) whereas the injury index according to

Contralateral foot temperature monitoring during Charcot immobilisation: A systematic review.

AIMS: Contralateral temperature difference (CTD) is a frequently used marker of healing in Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy (CN). We aimed to determine whether there is a consistent approach to CTD measurement during healing and the decision-making process around cessation of immobilisation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched until February 2022 for peer-reviewed studies using keywords, including (('arthropathy' OR 'osteoarthropathy' OR 'osteopathy' OR 'neuroarthropathy') AND 'Charcot' AND ('temperature')), which returned 789 results excluding duplicates. Subcutaneous thermal sensor microchip validation in vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) during normothermic and hypothermic situations.

BACKGROUND: Internal temperature data are essential for clinical evaluation in veterinary medicine. During the last decade, new thermometry devices have been developed. Identification microchips with a temperature sensor offer double utility to clinicians by satisfying animal identification regulations and providing a non-invasive method for temperature measurement. METHODS: During this study, 26 healthy vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) were implanted with a subcutaneous temperature transponding microchip. For each monkey, internal temperature measurements from the microchip and from

Hyperthermic treatment of malignant diseases: current status and a view toward the future.

New studies in hyperthermia at the basic science, engineering, and clinical level have stimulated renewed enthusiasm for re-investigating its potential as an anticancer therapy. This article reviews the salient features of these recent results and points out areas for additional investigation. Highlighting these new results is the publication of several positive phase III trials for thermoradiotherapy compared to radiotherapy alone. Important highlights are the encouraging results using magnetic resonance imaging for noninvasive thermometry. If this technology is successfully implemented with

Comparison of computer simulations and clinical treatment results of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) of uterine fibroids.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) can be used to noninvasively treat symptomatic uterine fibroids by heating with focused ultrasound sonications while monitoring the temperature with magnetic resonance (MR) thermometry. While prior studies have compared focused ultrasound simulations to clinical results, studies involving uterine fibroids remain scarce. In our study, we perform such a comparison to assess the suitability of simulations for treatment planning. METHODS: Sonications (N = 67) were simulated retrospectively using acoustic and thermal models bas

Optimal strategy for measuring intraventricular temperature using acceleration motion compensation diffusion-weighted imaging.

DWI thermometry is affected by CSF pulsation. To achieve more accurate determination of intraventricular temperature, we compared conventional DWI (c-DWI), acceleration motion compensation DWI (aMC-DWI), and motion compensation DWI (MC-DWI) when using two different b values (commonly used b value [1000 s/mm2] and theoretically optimized b value according to the diffusion coefficient of the CSF [400 s/mm2]). Eight healthy volunteers were scanned using a 3.0-T magnetic resonance (MR) system. The temperature map was created using the diffusion coefficient from DWI with b = 1000 and 400 s/mm2, res

Assessing rectal temperature with a novel non-invasive sensor.

Athletes, soldiers, and workers who perform intense physical activities under extreme hot conditions might encounter increased physiological thermal strain. Consequently, the increase in body core temperature (Tc) might result in heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Thus, continuously following changes in Tc is of utmost importance. Recently, the Tcore sensor (Dräger, Germany), which employs a unique dual-sensor heat flux technology, became commercially available to measure Tc, in a hospital-controlled environment. This study aimed to evaluate the possibility of using the Tcore sensor to accurately

The Safety of Using Body-Transmit MRI in Patients with Implanted Deep Brain Stimulation Devices.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established treatment for patients with movement disorders. Patients receiving chronic DBS provide a unique opportunity to explore the underlying mechanisms of DBS using functional MRI. It has been shown that the main safety concern with MRI in these patients is heating at the electrode tips - which can be minimised with strict adherence to a supervised acquisition protocol using a head-transmit/receive coil at 1.5T. MRI using the body-transmit coil with a multi-channel receive head coil has a number of potential advantages including an improved s

Atmosphere-Controlled Valence Engineering of Eu in Aluminate Crystals Enabling High-Performance Temperature Sensing and Flexible X-Ray Imaging.

Developing scintillators that simultaneously deliver high light yield, radiation stability, flexibility, and environmental sustainability remains a long-standing challenge, while optical thermometry is further limited by narrow working ranges and insufficient sensitivity. Here, we propose a buried-carbon reduction concept that enables precise regulation of Eu valence states through controlled carbon burial depth from a single precursor, thereby unlocking multifunctionality within one material system. By such strategy, fully reduced SrMgAl10O17:Eu2+ is utilized in x-ray detection and imaging. H

Ocular infrared thermography combined with stacked ensemble machine learning enables contact-free rectal temperature prediction in Murrah buffaloes.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate core body temperature monitoring is central to health assessment in buffaloes, yet conventional rectal thermometry demands physical restraint and direct animal contact, causing stress to animals and posing injury risk to handlers. METHODS: This study developed and validated a contact-free prediction framework combining ocular infrared thermography with stacked ensemble machine learning, using medial canthus temperatures of both eyes alongside environmental variables as predictors of rectal temperature in 471 adult female Murrah buffaloes. Normalisation parameters were d

Impact of breast biopsy markers on magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: The placement of a biopsy marker at the time of breast biopsy is standard of care to mark the biopsy site and facilitate surgical excision. However, their impact on incisionless treatments like magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound remains underexplored. These factors are important considerations for the design and execution of translational research in this field. METHODS: Five commercially available markers were evaluated. Magnetic resonance imaging studies characterized artifact size across various treatment planning and monitoring sequences, as well as MR thermometry pe

Non-Axillary Chest Skin Temperature Underestimates Core Temperature During Redistribution Hypothermia Following Spinal Anesthesia.

Accurate temperature monitoring is essential for detecting perioperative hypothermia during spinal anesthesia, where rapid redistribution of body heat commonly occurs. Although zero-heat-flux (ZHF) thermometry has emerged as a noninvasive method for estimating core temperature, the reliability of chest skin temperature monitoring in this context remains unclear. In this prospective observational study, temperature measurements were obtained at 5-minute intervals using a forehead ZHF sensor, an infrared tympanic thermometer, and a non-axillary chest skin probe in patients undergoing orthopedic

Fiducial markers and their impact on ablation outcome for patients treated with MR-guided transurethral ablation (TULSA): a retrospective technical analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Fiducial markers improve accuracy in external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for treatment of prostate cancer (PCa). However, many patients recur after EBRT necessitating additional treatment, such as MR-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation (TULSA). Residual markers may compromise TULSA through ultrasound field distortions and generation of local susceptibility artifacts. The objective was to investigate how markers affect the ablation outcome during clinical TULSA treatments. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on nine patients with radiorecurrent PCa

Alteration of brain temperature and systemic inflammation in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Parkinson's disease (PD) is known to be related to various factors, including neuroinflammation, increased oxidative stress, and brain temperature alteration. We aimed to evaluate the correlation between these factors using diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) thermometry and blood tests of systemic inflammation. METHODS: From July 2012 to Jun 2017, 103 patients with PD (44 men and 59 women; mean age, 60.43 ± 9.12 years) and 106 sex- and age-matched healthy volunteers (48 men and 58 women; mean age, 58.16 ± 8.45 years) retrospectively underwent magnetic resonance DWI thermometry to es

Construction and evaluation of an anatomically correct multi-image modality compatible phantom for prostate cancer focal ablation.

PURPOSE: Focal therapy using lasers is emerging as an alternative strategy for prostate cancer treatment. However, to our knowledge no anatomically correct models are available to test imaging and ablation techniques. Animal models present ethical, anatomical and cost challenges. We designed and validated an inexpensive but anatomically correct prostate phantom incorporating tumor, rectum and urethra that can be used for simulated and experimental magnetic resonance guided focal intervention. Our secondary aim was to asses the phantom using other imaging modalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The

Histopathological evaluation of prostate specimens after thermal ablation may be confounded by the presence of thermally-fixed cells.

Purpose: Prostate cancer can be eradicated with heat exposure. However, high and rapid temperature elevations may cause thermofixation giving the appearance of viable tissue. The purpose was to characterize the immunoprofile and evaluate the viability of prostate regions with suspected thermofixation. Methods and materials: A prospective, ethics-approved and registered study (NCT03350529) enrolled six patients with MRI-visible, biopsy-concordant prostate cancer to undergo lesion-targeted MRI-guided transurethral ultrasound ablation (TULSA) followed by radical prostatectomy at 3 weeks, to evalu
