Aiming at ecological validity-Midfrontal theta oscillations in a toy gun shooting task.

Laboratory electroencephalography (EEG) studies have already provided important insights into the neuronal mechanisms of performance monitoring. However, to our knowledge no study so far has examined neuronal correlates of performance monitoring using an ecologically valid task outside a typical laboratory setting. Therefore, we examined midfrontal theta and the feedback-related negativity (FRN) using mobile EEG in a physical shooting task within an ecologically valid environment with highly dynamical visual feedback. Participants shot a target using a toy gun while moving and looking around f

Exploring the Role of the Nucleus Accumbens in Adaptive Behavior Using Concurrent Intracranial and Extracranial Electrophysiological Recordings in Humans.

Recent human electrophysiological evidence implicated θ-band communication between the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and frontal and parietal cortex in cognitive flexibility. Since the NAc is connected with the motor system, we tested whether phase and amplitude-based NAc-cortical connectivity and power modulation likewise underlie flexibility in motor action control. We combined concurrently recorded intracranial and extracranial electroencephalograms from seven psychiatric patients implanted with deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes who performed a stop signal task (SST). Inhibition success, as

Causal roles of prefrontal and temporo-parietal theta oscillations for inequity aversion.

The right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) and the right lateral prefrontal cortex (rLPFC) are known to play prominent roles in human social behaviour. However, it remains unknown which brain rhythms in these regions contribute to trading-off fairness norms against selfish interests as well as whether the influence of these oscillations depends on whether fairness violations are advantageous or disadvantageous for a decision maker. To answer these questions, we used non-invasive transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to determine which brain rhythms in rTPJ and rLPFC are causally

Midfrontal theta reactivity to conflict and error are linked to externalizing and internalizing respectively.

Dimensional psychopathology scores measure symptom severity; cutting across disorder categories. Their clinical utility is high given comorbidity, but their neural basis is unclear. We used scalp electroencephalography (EEG) to concurrently assess neural activity across internalizing and externalizing traits. "Theta rhythm" (4-7 Hz) spectral power at the frontal midline site Fz in specific goal conflict and action error phases within a trial of a Stop-Signal Task was extracted using process-specific contrasts. A final sample of 146 community participants (63 males, 83 females; mean age = 36; S

[Identification of neuroleptics by using the characteristics of the spatial organization of the EEG].

The electroencephalographic reactions to stelazine, aminazine and haloperidol were studied by the methods of multifactor and multidiscriminant analyses. The specific features of pharmacogenic spatial reorganization of the EEG were revealed for every neuroleptic which made it possible to recognize the drugs in 90.9, 88.9 and 82.9% of cases, respectively.

Aberrant Functional Connectivity and Brain Network Organization in High-Schizotypy Individuals: An Electroencephalography Study.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Oscillatory synchrony plays a crucial role in establishing functional connectivity across distinct brain regions. Within the realm of schizophrenia, suggested to be a neuropsychiatric disconnection syndrome, discernible aberrations arise in the organization of brain networks. We aim to investigate whether the resting-state functional network is already altered in healthy individuals with high schizotypy traits, highlighting the pivotal influence of brain rhythms in driving brain network alterations. STUDY DESIGN: Two-minute resting-state electroencephalography recor

Development of infant sustained attention and its relation to EEG oscillations: an EEG and cortical source analysis study.

The current study examined the relation between infant sustained attention and infant EEG oscillations. Fifty-nine infants were tested at 6 (N = 15), 8 (N = 17), 10 (N = 14), and 12 (N = 13) months. Three attention phases, stimulus orienting, sustained attention, and attention termination, were defined based on infants' heart rate changes. Frequency analysis using simultaneously recorded EEG focused on infant theta (2-6 Hz), alpha (6-9 Hz), and beta (9-14 Hz) rhythms. Cortical source analysis of EEG oscillations was conducted with realistic infant MRI models. Theta synchronization was found ov

Phase relations of rhythmic neuronal firing in the supramammillary nucleus and mammillary body to the hippocampal theta activity in urethane anesthetized rats.

Structures in the caudal diencephalon including the posterior hypothalamic nucleus, the supramammillary nucleus (SUM) and the nuclei of the mammillary body (MB) occupy a strategic position in the crossroads of ascending and descending traffic between the brainstem and the limbic forebrain (septum/hippocampus). In this study we analyzed the phase relations of rhythmically discharging SUM/MB cells to hippocampal theta rhythm in urethane anesthetized rats with a dual aim of separating different functional types of SUM and MB neurons and characterizing their coupling to septohippocampal theta osci

Theta-Alpha Dysregulation reveals impaired endogenous cognitive control in adolescent Obsessive-Compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by rigid thoughts and behaviors that may compromise cognitive flexibility, yet, especially in adolescence results are inconclusive. This is all the more the case concerning the question whether flexibility deficits emerge specifically when endogenous control, internal monitoring, and working-memory-dependent task-set management are required. In an EEG-beamforming study, we examined adolescents with OCD (N = 68) and healthy controls (HC) (N = 73) in a task-switching paradigm with cue-based (exogenous, externally guided) and memory-based (endo

The Role of Low-frequency Neural Oscillations in Speech Processing: Revisiting Delta Entrainment.

Studies that use measures of cerebro-acoustic coherence have shown that theta oscillations (3-10 Hz) entrain to syllable-size modulations in the energy envelope of speech. This entrainment creates sensory windows in processing acoustic cues. Recent reports submit that delta oscillations (<3 Hz) can be entrained by nonsensory content units like phrases and serve to process meaning-though such views face fundamental problems. Other studies suggest that delta underlies a sensory chunking linked to the processing of sequential attributes of speech sounds. This chunking associated with the "focus o

Drug effects on EEG frequency spectra as a function of interstimulus interval.

The frequency spectra of EEG background activity preceding the stimulus in a serial simple RT task were investigated as a function of interstimulus interval (ISI). The percentage of power in the alpha and theta bands increased with longer ISIs while the delta activity decreased. Additionally, the effects of an amphetamine and a barbiturate were investigated. The increase in alpha activity with longer ISI conditions were larger after barbiturate than after placebo, while it remained constant after amphetamine treatment. Contrary to expectation, no systemic changes in alpha activity were found d

EEG longitudinal studies in febrile convulsions. Genetic aspects.

It was the purpose of the study to obtain viewpoints on the genetics of febrile convulsions and their relationship to epilepsy by EEG long term follow up. 89 children with febrile convulsions could be followed up to the age of 11 to 13 years (in total 1046 EEG records). The study was concentrated on genetically determined EEG patterns: bilaterally synchronous spikes and waves, photosensitivity and 4-7 cps rhythms. The statistical evaluation was based on standards derived from known strict age dependence of the different patterns. Theta rhythms were found in 54%, spikes and waves of the resting

EEG Insights into Visual Attention and Affective Prosody Processing in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Examining the Theta/Alpha Ratio.

Attention is a fundamental cognitive process, and individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience challenges in both cognitive and emotional regulation. Although multiple object tracking (MOT) tasks are frequently used to assess attention impairments in ASD, most studies focus solely on behavioral responses and overlook physiological measures such as electroencephalogram (EEG). Moreover, the interaction between cognition and emotion during MOT tasks remains underexplored. This study addresses these gaps by examining cognitive load variations using the Theta/Alpha Ratio (TAR) i

Delayed modulation of alpha band activity increases response inhibition deficits in adolescents with AD(H)D.

Deficiencies in inhibitory control are one of the hallmarks of attention-deficit-(hyperactivity) disorder (AD(H)D). Response inhibition demands can become increased through additional conflicts, namely when already integrated representations of perception-action associations have to be updated. Yet, the neural mechanisms of how such conflicts worsen response inhibition in AD(H)D are unknown, but, if identified, could help to better understand the complex nature of AD(H)D-associated impulsivity. We investigated both behavioral performance and EEG activity in the theta and alpha band of adolesce

A causal role for the precuneus in network-wide theta and gamma oscillatory activity during complex memory retrieval.

OBJECTIVE: Divalproex sodium can interact with many drugs in which combination treatments are used; it can increase plasma concentrations of some drugs by inhibiting metabolism and can increase the free fractions of other medications by displacing them from plasma proteins. The combination of risperidone and divalproex sodium is used to treat the manic phase of bipolar disorder. However, the effect of risperidone on the pharmacokinetics of valproate has not previously been systematically studied. The aims of this study were to determine the effect of repeated doses of oral risperidone on the p

Network based statistics associates increased connectivity to REM sleep disorder and hallucinations in early DLB.

Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) is a heterogeneous disease characterized by four core clinical features: visual hallucinations, REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), cognitive fluctuations and Parkinsonism. We study the relationship between these features and functional connectivity from high-density electroencephalographic data of 33 subjects with early-stage DLB and 21 healthy controls. We used two connectivity metrics averaged on the individual theta and alpha bands, defined by determining the individual theta-to-alpha transition frequency through the package transfreq. After showing that DLB

Nicotinamide mononucleotide stimulates the activity of bursting slow-oscillation neurons in the supramammillary nucleus and enhances REM sleep.

Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) plays an important role in enhancing NAD+ levels and maintaining tissue functions in both mice and humans. Here, we show that NMN stimulates GABAergic neurons expressing Slc12a8, an NMN transporter, in the supramammillary (SuM) nucleus and enhances rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. By juxtacellular recording in the SuM, we have identified bursting slow-oscillation (SO) neurons that discharge in rhythmic theta burst at maximal rates during REM. Their firing frequency significantly decreases in aged mice, and NMN restores it to the level of young mice. The Slc12a8

Theta-Beta/Gamma Coupling Identifies Bothersome Tinnitus Induced by Thalamocortical Dysrhythmia.

BACKGROUND: The phantom sound of tinnitus can be an extremely debilitating condition. The thalamocortical dysrhythmia (TCD) hypothesis is a feature of subjective tinnitus; however, its consistency in characterizing different types of tinnitus remains unclear. METHOD: We compared theta-beta/gamma coupling in multichannel EEG recordings from subjects with bothersome tinnitus (BT), non-bothersome tinnitus (NBT), and healthy controls (HC). Additionally, we used these EEG features to distinguish BT from NBT by employing the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) model. RESULTS: Theta-beta/gamma phase-amplitude

Daily Dynamics of Resting-State Electroencephalographic Theta and Gamma Fluctuations Are Associated With Cognitive Performance in Healthy Aging.

OBJECTIVES: Healthy age-related cognitive changes are highly heterogeneous across individuals. This variability is increasingly explained through the lens of spontaneous fluctuations of brain activity, now considered a powerful index of age-related changes. However, brain activity is a biological process modulated by circadian rhythms, and how these fluctuations evolve throughout the day is under investigation. METHODS: We analyzed data from 101 healthy late middle-aged participants from the Cognitive Fitness in Aging study (68 women and 33 men; aged 50-69 years). Participants completed 5 ele

[Specifics of perception of acoustic image of intrinsic bioelectric brain activity].

We studied the particularities of perception of the acoustic image of intrinsic EEG. We found that the assessment of perception of sounds, the presentation of which was synchronized and was agreed with current bioelectric brain activity, is higher that assessment of perception of acoustic EEG image presented in recorded form. Presentation of recorded acoustic image of EEG is accompanied by increased activity of beta-band in the frontal areas, while real-time presentation of acoustic EEG image is accompanied by the increase of slow wave activity: theta- and delta-bands of occipital areas of the
