Here we report the cases of five patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) who developed hydrothorax because of pleuroperitoneal communication. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) peritoneography revealed penetrated sites on the diaphragm in all patients. All patients underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), and a dialysate containing indigo carmine was injected intraperitoneally through a CAPD catheter to confirm the fistula. In all patients, a thinned bleb was found at the center of the diaphragmatic tendon consistent with that noted on preoperative CT peri

INTRODUCTION: The totally thoracoscopic approach for mitral valve (MV) disease is a minimally invasive method. We investigated the procedure's feasibility, safety and effectiveness when it was performed by an experienced operator.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 96 consecutive patients with MV disease treated between March 2016 and November 2019 by minimally invasive procedures. The procedures were performed on a femoral artery-vein bypass through two ports, including a main operation port and a thoracoscopic port. The clinical data of patients were collected, including preoperative card

Foregut duplication is more common in girls, particularly if there is bronchopulmonary involvement. The incidence of oesophageal duplication cyst is estimated to be one in 8200 live births with male prevalence. Most duplications are benign, but the presence of ectopic gastric mucosa and the potential for malignant degeneration remain a concern. A newborn female, antenatally diagnosed with right-sided thoracic mass, was diagnosed with a foregut duplication cyst of size 4.1 cm × 3.7 cm × 8 cm in the posterior mediastinum. Thoracoscopic resection was done on day of life 14. The postoperative reco

Rib fractures result in serious morbidity and mortality after trauma. Although there is ongoing debate about surgical rib fixation, it is increasingly important for some patients. Minimally invasive techniques for rib fixation are gaining traction within the trauma community. We present an observational experience at our level 1 trauma center with our first 10 cases of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) internal rib fixation. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery internal plates are especially helpful for rib fractures under the scapula, which are difficult to access traditionally. Thi

Pulmonary adenofibroma is a rare biphasic tumor that contains epithelial and stromal components. We report a case of pulmonary adenofibroma in which the tumor was resected by thoracoscopic surgery and the diagnosis was established by histopathology. A 59-year-old woman with a past medical history of pyelonephritis visited our hospital for evaluation of an abnormal opacity on a plain chest x-ray during a comprehensive medical examination. A follow-up chest x-ray showed enlargement of the lesion, and the patient was referred to our department for further management. Chest computed tomography rev

Thoracoscopic plication for congenital diaphragmatic eventration in an adult. Diaphragmatic eventration is known to be abnormal elevation of diaphragm and congenital causes are due to abnormal diaphragm muscle development. Here we report surgical treatment of congenital diaphragmatic eventration. A 45-year-old woman who complained of cough was admitted to our hospital. She had history of cough and was diagnosed as diaphragmatic eventration in childhood. Chest X-ray showed elevated left hemidiaphragm with a bowel gas underneath. Under the diagnosis of congenital eventration of left hemidiaphrag

Esophageal bronchogenic cysts are rare, and since a limited number of cases has been reported, the treatment plan for asymptomatic patients is difficult. A 55-year-old man without any symptoms visited our hospital for further examination of an esophageal mass detected on simple computed tomography. Upper endoscopy showed the protruding, submucosal mass covered by normal mucosa, and endoscopic sonography confirmed hypoechoic lesions originating from the muscularis propria. The patient was diagnosed as having an esophageal duplication cyst and underwent thoracoscopic resection. Pathological find

BACKGROUND: The continuous evolvement of minimally invasive thymectomy over the last decades has potential advantages over trans-sternal thymectomy with similar oncologic outcomes of thymoma and complete remission for myasthenia gravis patients. A variety of different minimally invasive approaches have been described previously. The aim of this article is to present our subxiphoid and subcostal approaches in thymectomy for patients with myasthenia gravis and thymomas and to investigate the early surgical outcomes of these patients.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of 95 patient

Epicardial Convergent ablation followed by endocardial touch-up and an additional ablation may be superior to catheter-based interventions in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation. We sought to extend the epicardial lesion set by changing the standard subxiphoid thoracotomy to a left-lateral, totally thoracoscopic approach. This tutorial depicts a closed-chest, beating-heart procedure, including ablation of the left atrial posterior wall, the left atrial dome, and the left pulmonary veins. The left atrial appendage is closed using an epicardial occlusion device.

Minimally invasive pulmonary segmentectomy allows adequate oncologic treatment in selected cases while preserving lung parenchyma and minimizing perioperative morbidity and length of hospital stay. Most lung segments may be resected as segmentectomies or as part of bisegmentectomies (as is the case for the lingula). However, the resection of individual basal segments may be particularly challenging. Although several variations of minimally invasive pulmonary segmentectomy have been described, I favor a fully thoracoscopic multiport approach that allows direct access to the segmental structures

AIM: Destroyed lung refers to destruction of a large portion of a lung induced by chronic or recurrent lung infections. The aim of this single-center retrospective review was to evaluate patients with a diagnosis of destroyed lung undergoing pneumonectomy via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, in terms of surgical technique, postoperative morbidity and mortality, and long-term outcomes.
METHODS: Data of 15 patients who underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic pneumonectomy for destroyed lung during a 4-year period were analyzed retrospectively. There were 9 (60%) males and 6 (40%) females wi

Background: Coelomic cysts are uncommon benign cyctic lesions of the mediastinum. Complete resection of the cyst with surgical treatment is indicated depending on whether the patient is symptomatic or whether the cyst grows during follow-up, or whether the diagnosis is uncertain. Surgical treatment prevents complications, relieves symptoms, and establishes diagnosis. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is the best method for excision of these cysts. This approach is safe and effective, has low morbidity, and shortens the length of hospital stay Objectives: We aimed to analyze our exper

Video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy is increasingly performed for thymic disorders. However, intraoperative bleeding, especially from the innominate vein, is often inevitable, and is the major reason for conversion. Successful control under thoracoscopic thymectomy is crucial for the safety of the patient. We hereby report two cases of intraoperative bleeding and strategies for safe and effective bleeding control during the conventional three-port video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy. The first case was an 80-year-old male patient diagnosed with cystic thymoma, and injury to a thymic ve

Recently, thoracoscopic esophagectomy has been widely accepted as a minimally invasive surgery and a possible standard procedure for esophageal cancer patients. Furthermore, it has an advantage for meticulous lymph node dissection by providing a magnification view and less blood loss. Mediastinal lymphadenectomy, especially upper mediastinal lymph node dissection, is a key point for esophageal cancer surgery because of its high frequency of metastasis and dissection efficacy. To avoid complications such as recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, pneumoniae, chylothorax and unexpected injury in medias

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether laryngeal mask anesthesia had more favorable postoperative outcomes than double-lumen tube intubation anesthesia in uniportal thoracoscopic thymectomy.
METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively from December 2013 to December 2017. A total of 96 patients with anterior mediastinum mass underwent nonintubated uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy with laryngeal mask, and 129 patients underwent intubated uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy. A single incision of ∼3 cm was made in an intercostal space along the anterior axillary line. P
