INTRODUCTION: Corynebacterium striatum is a non-Diphteriae commensal bacterium with a wide range of pathogenicity. The identification of multidrug-resistant (MDR) C. striatum is concerning because drug susceptibility testing is not usually performed in microbiology laboratories. PURPOSE: This retrospective study reports on the diagnostic and surgical treatment of 10 patients with ascending thrombophlebitis in the proximal great saphenous vein with free-floating thrombi reaching into the common femoral vein.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 10 patients were operated in our clinic for thrombophlebitis with free-floating thrombi in the saphenofemoral junction. Diagnosis of free-floating thrombi was made by B-mode and color-coded duplex ultrasound examination. Surgical thrombectomy was performed immediately.

Suppurative thrombophlebitis is a well recognised and potentially fatal complication of intravenous cannulation in burns patients. We report a case of an Afro-Caribbean patient with noninsulin-dependent diabetes who developed signs of systemic sepsis two weeks after a 14% total body surface area flame burn. Despite an initial paucity of clinical signs at the cannulation site, exploratory venotomy revealed frank suppuration within the long saphenous vein from the ankle to the groin. CASE REPORT: A 76-year-old woman was treated with corticosteroid therapy for 1 year for suppurated thrombophlebitis of the right greater saphenous vein. Ascending thrombophlebitis of the superficial leg veins is known to propagate into the deep leg veins and to embolize. In a prospective study we followed up 44 patients with sonographically diagnosed ascending thrombophlebitis into the deep veins (V. saphena magna n = 40, V. saphena parva n = 4). In 15 of 44 cases (34%) thrombosis of the crossing veins was found intraoperatively and 6 of 44 crossings were filled with floating thrombi into the deep vein lumina (14%).
