Ectopic thyroid gland tissue can occur either as the only detectable thyroid gland tissue or in addition to a normotopic thyroid gland. After a total thyroidectomy thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) can induce a compensatory volume increase of previously asymptomatic ectopic tissue. This hyperplastic ectopic tissue can occur as an unclear cervical space-occupying lesion. Prior to surgical exploration of an unclear cervical mass the possibility of ectopic thyroid tissue should be included in the differential diagnostic considerations.

PURPOSES: Knowledge of visual analog scale (VAS) pain assessment for transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) is limited. The purpose of this analysis was to classify the postoperative discomfort scores in patients undergoing TOETVA compared to open thyroidectomy.
METHODS: Observational clinical study of patients who underwent thyroidectomy by VAS pain assessment from September 2016 to March 2017. Patients were stratified into two groups: patients eligible for TOETVA (Group TOETVA) and non-candidates for endoscopic intervention (open thyroidectomy approach-OTA). VAS was

OBJECTIVE: According to American Thyroid Association (ATA) guideline, thyroid lobectomy is recommended for the management of papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMC) with a diameter lesser than 1 cm. However, this procedure is associated with a risk of potential complications such as vocal cord palsy. Thus, we considered the applicability of conservative thyroidectomy, involving partial removal of the thyroid cancer lesion, not the entire ipsilateral thyroid lobe.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all PTMC patients who underwent conservative thyroidectomy at Konkuk University Hospital betw

Total thyroidectomy for hyperthyroidism is usually curative. We report the unusual recurrence of thyrotoxicosis following a near-total thyroidectomy. The patient, a 27-year-old woman, elected to have a total thyroidectomy and began levothyroxine after the procedure. Approximately 2 years later, recurrent thyrotoxicosis was evident off levothyroxine. Vascularized thyroid tissue was noted on ultrasound, and a radioactive iodine scan indicated increased uptake in the right thyroid region. She began antithyroid medication and was subsequently treated with radioactive iodine once a euthyroid state

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) in thyroid surgery has revealed the need to develop new strategies for cases in which a loss of signal (LOS) occurs on the first side of a planned total thyroidectomy.
OBJECTIVES: This study reviews the experience of the authors in using IONM for planned total thyroidectomy after LOS on the first thyroid lobe. The aims were to estimate the incidence of LOS on the first side of resection and to compare intraoperative strategies applied after this event.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Intermittent IONM was performed with stimulati

UNLABELLED: Thyroid surgery is the most commonly performed procedure in the field of endocrine surgery. Studies are still ongoing on the development of a single algorithm for diagnosis and care of patients at risk of postoperative hypoparathyroidism. The aim of the study was to determine the biochemical marker that would allow the most accurate diagnosis of patient groups at risk of developing hypoparathyroidism and to identify risk factors for this disorder.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The prospective study included 142 consecutive patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for benign goiter from Jan

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to identify a simple and effective way of calculating levothyroxine doses for postsurgical hypothyroidism.
METHODS: Levothyroxine dosage was calculated using a weight (μg/kg)-based formula for patients who underwent thyroidectomy for benign disease from 2001 to 2011. Other formulas using age, sex, ideal body weight, body mass index, and body surface area were also evaluated.
RESULTS: Four hundred four patients were included; 85% were women. The mean initial levothyroxine dosage was 1.4 μg/kg, which resulted in thyroid-stimulating hormone normalization i

BACKGROUND: Calcium and calcitriol supplements are standard for patients with post-thyroidectomy serum calcium <2.0 mmol/L; however, we wondered whether we overtreat post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia with intraoperative parathyroid hormone (PTH). We examined quick-intraoperative intact PTH (QiPTH) assay results to find a suitable treatment for post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia.
METHODS: We studied 197 bilateral thyroidectomy patients. Post-thyroidectomy hypocalcemia was defined as serum calcium <2.0 mmol/L. A QiPTH assay was done 15 min after the thyroidectomy (QiPTH(15)), and hypoparathyroidism

INTRODUCTION: "Forgotten" goiter is an extremely rare disease which is defined as a mediastinal thyroid mass found after total thyroidectomy.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report two cases with forgotten goiter. One underwent total thyroidectomy due to thyroid papillary cancer and TSH level was in normal range one month after surgery. The thyroid scintigraphy scan revealed mediastinal thyroid mass. The second case underwent total thyroidectomy due to Graves' disease and TSH level was low after surgery. At postoperative seventh year, patients were admitted to our Endocrinology Division due to persi

INTRODUCTION: We have developed a collaborative approach to pediatric thyroid surgery, with operations performed at a children's hospital by a pediatric surgeon and an endocrine surgeon. We hypothesize that this strategy minimizes specialist-specific limitations and optimizes care of children with surgical thyroid disease.
METHODS: Data from all partial and total thyroidectomies performed by the pediatric-endocrine surgery team at a tertiary children's hospital between 1995 and 2009 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Statistical analyses were performed with IBM SPSS software (SPSS,

AIM: The paper's aim is to examine and analyse the incidence rate of postoperative pareses of N. recurrens in 1311 operated thyroid sides and 909 patients.
PATIENTS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUE: In histology we found nodular changes in 92.6% of 840 operated benignant strumata. In 69 malignant strumata the papillary thyroid carcinoma was the most common. The surgical concept changed within the last years from subtotal resections and enuclations to functional and total resections.
RESULTS: Preoperative pareses of N. recurrens were seen in 5.3% of the patients, which emphasizes the demand for a preop

Completion thyroidectomy is performed because of a deferred diagnosis of differentiated carcinoma of the thyroid or a significant thyroid remnant after initial operation. During a period of 6 years, data from 40 patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma undergoing completion thyroidectomy were retrospectively reviewed. There were 4 men and 36 women (1:9), and the average age was 39.6+/-1.9 years (range, 20 to 62 years). The indications for the initial surgery were a solitary thyroid nodule in 36 (90%) patients, multinodular goiter in 3 (7.5%) patients, and Graves' disease in 1 (2.5%) pati

We report a case of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis, diagnosed with a systematic laboratory investigation in a 64-year-old patient, for haematuria. Despite the interruption of amiodarone, hyperthyroidism and a goiter occurred. Conventional therapy betablockers, antithyroid agents, prednisone, potassium perchlorate) did not result in any clinical improvement. The development of a malignant thyrotoxicosis with neurologic disturbances and acute respiratory insufficiency required mechanical ventilation and a subtotal thyroidectomy. The patient's status improved progressively and he was discharge

Completion thyroidectomy is defined as the surgical removal of the remnant thyroid tissue following procedures less than total or near-total thyroidectomy. The extent of surgical management for differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is controversial. Although some authors advocate subtotal thyroidectomy with lower complication rates, total or near-total thyroidectomy and completion thyroidectomy have been defended by others because of the improved survival and lower morbidity that is comparable with subtotal thyroidectomy. In this study, the incidence of residual tumor and surgical complicatio
