Cyhalothrin--a novel acaricidal and insecticidal synthetic pyrethroid for the control of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) and the buffalo fly (Haematobia irritans exigua).

Cyhalothrin, a novel synthetic pyrethroid, was evaluated for control of the major resistant strains of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) and for control of the buffalo fly (Haematobia irritans exigua) on cattle. In regulated treatment trials with 0.007% cyhalothrin, greater than 99% control of the Biarra, Mackay, Mt Alford, DDT resistant and Ulam cattle tick strains was obtained. Protective-period trials were conducted in which animals which had been sprayed with 0.007% cyhalothrin then received a continuing heavy challenge of the organophosphate-resistant Biarra tick strain. The first sem

Willingness to pay for residential property-based and community-based tick control methods in Lyme disease-endemic areas of the Upper Midwest, United States.

Ticks and tickborne diseases are of increasing concern in the United States, and the burden is high in certain focal areas. While the acceptability of various tick control and disease prevention methods has been studied, the public's willingness to pay for environmental interventions at the individual or community level is less well described. Using data collected as part of a larger survey, we performed an additional analysis of residents of Lyme disease-endemic counties of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to assess their willingness to support and pay annually for various methods of proper

Autism spectrum disorder, flea and tick medication, and adjustments for exposure misclassification: the CHARGE (CHildhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment) case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The environmental contribution to autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is largely unknown, but household pesticides are receiving increased attention. We examined associations between ASD and maternally-reported use of imidacloprid, a common flea and tick treatment for pets. METHODS: Bayesian logistic models were used to estimate the association between ASD and imidacloprid and to correct for potential differential exposure misclassification due to recall in a case control study of ASD. RESULTS: Our analytic dataset included complete information for 262 typically developing controls a

Biological control of ticks in domestic environments: Modeling the potential impact of entomopathogenic fungi on the transmission of East Coast fever in cattle.

Biological control of ticks using entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) is a highly desired alternative to chemical acaricides for the control of tick-borne pathogens. For Metarhizium anisopliae isolate ICIPE 7, one of these EPFs, efficacy against multiple tick species has been demonstrated in laboratory and field settings. However, we currently have little quantitative understanding of how EPFs can impact transmission. We developed a deterministic model of tick-host-pathogen interactions to explore how the effects of EPF on Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks may impact the transmission dynamics of Eas

Productivity and health effects of anaplasmosis and babesiosis on Bos indicus cattle and their crosses, and the effects of differing intensity of tick control in Australia.

Tick fever is an important disease of cattle where Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus acts as a vector for the three causal organisms Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale. Bos indicus cattle and their crosses are more resistant to the clinical effects of infection with B. bovis and B. bigemina than are Bos taurus cattle. Resistance is not complete, however, and herds of B. indicus-cross cattle are still at risk of babesiosis in environments where exposure to B. bovis is light in most years but occasionally high. The susceptibility of B. indicus cattle and their crosses to i

A survey of cattle producers in the Boophilus microplus endemic area of Queensland to determine attitudes to the control of and vaccination against tick fever.

A survey by mail was used to determine the views of beef producers in the Boophilus microplus endemic area of Queensland on the control of and vaccination against tick fever. Data from 448 questionnaires were analysed, representing 2.7% of beef producers in the survey area. Producers considered buffalo fly (Haematobia irritans exigua) infestation as the most important problem whereas tick fever ranked sixth overall. Private veterinarians were regarded as the most important source of information on vaccines for cattle followed by a weekly rural newspaper. From the survey we estimate that about

The control of Hyalomma ticks, vectors of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus: Where are we now and where are we going?

At a time of major global, societal, and environmental changes, the shifting distribution of pathogen vectors represents a real danger in certain regions of the world as generating opportunities for emergency. For example, the recent arrival of the Hyalomma marginatum ticks in southern France and the concurrent appearance of cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF)-a disease vectored by this tick species-in neighboring Spain raises many concerns about the associated risks for the European continent. This context has created an urgent need for effective methods for control, surveillance,

Future challenges for parasitology: vector control and 'One health' in Europe: the veterinary medicinal view on CVBDs such as tick borreliosis, rickettsiosis and canine leishmaniosis.

The medical as well as the veterinary importance of parasitic arthropods or ectoparasites in general terms, is characterized by the primary or secondary impact on the health of humans and companion animals alike. The parasitic arthropods addressed here are those ectoparasites belong to the class of insects, such as fleas and sand flies, or the subclass of acarids, such as ticks. These parasitic arthropods interact intensively with their hosts by blood feeding. Fleas, sand flies and ticks hold the vector capacity to transmit pathogens such as virus, bacteria or protozoa to cats, dogs and humans

Evaluation of different chemical groups used for the control of Rhipicephalus microplus against ticks from the Amblyomma cajennense complex parasitizing cattle.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of different chemical groups, approved as acaricide to Rhipicephalus microplus, against ticks from the Amblyomma cajennense complex parasitizing cattle under laboratory and field conditions. Laboratory trials (LT) used calves artificially infested with Amblyomma tonelliae, while field trials (FT) involved cattle naturally infested with Amblyomma sculptum. Bovines were treated with commercial formulations of amitraz (only FT), doramectin, deltamethrin, fipronil, ivermectin, or a combination of fipronil and ivermectin, using doses recommen

A single dose of doxycycline after an ixodes ricinus tick bite to prevent Lyme borreliosis: An open-label randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: A single dose of doxycycline after a tick bite can prevent the development of Lyme borreliosis in North America, but extrapolation to Europe is hampered by differences in Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato genospecies and tick species. We assessed the efficacy of prophylaxis after a tick bite in Europe. METHODS: We conducted an open-label randomized controlled trial, administering a single dose of 200 mg doxycycline within 72 h after removing an attached tick from the skin, compared to no treatment. Potential participants ≥ 8 years of age who reported a recent tick bite online were i

A sustained release gel formulation of doramectin for control of lone star ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) and horn flies (Diptera: Muscidae) on cattle.

A gel formulation formed by incorporating technical doramectin into a 10% hydroxypropyl methylcellulose aqueous solution was used to subcutaneously inject steers at varying dosages. Doramectin serum concentration of steers receiving 600 microg (AI)/kg body weight declined from 21.9 ppb at 0.5 wk to below detectable at 8 wk postinjection. The 1,200 microg (AI)/kg injection resulted in serum concentrations of 29.1 ppb at 0.5 wk and declined to 0.5 ppb at 8 wk postinjection. Both the 600 and 1,200 microg (AI)/kg injections provided 100% inhibition of index of fecundity (IF) in adult lone star tic

Efficacy of pheromone-acaricide-impregnated tail-tag decoys for controlling the bont tick, Amblyomma hebraeum (Acari: Ixodidae), on cattle in Zimbabwe.

A large-scale field test using pheromone-acaricide-impregnated plastic tail-tag decoys demonstrated excellent efficacy of these devices for control of the bont tick, Amblyomma hebraeum, on cattle in Zimbabwe. The tail tags were impregnated with a mixture containing o-nitrophenol, methyl salicylate, 2,6-dichlorophenol and phenylacetaldehyde and one of three different acaricides (cyfluthrin, flumethrin or alphacypermethrin). o-Nitrophenol and methyl salicylate are components of the A. hebraeum attraction-aggregation-attachment pheromone, while 2,6-dichlorophenol and phenylacetaldehyde are proven

Feasibility of an adjunctive INtervention for Debilitating symptom complexes attributed to ticks (FIND): study protocol for a randomised, waitlist-controlled feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: Debilitating Symptom Complexes Attributed to Ticks (DSCATT) is a new term for an unexplained Australian syndrome-people who suffer from a chronic, multifaceted and debilitating illness, characteristically attributed to tick bites, but in a country without endemic Lyme disease. Despite the profound morbidity of DSCATT, no single causative agent has been identified and there are no recognised treatments for the illness at present. An increasing body of evidence shows psychological therapies such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can be effective in reducing symptom-related d

Acceptability of 4-poster deer treatment devices for community-wide tick control among residents of high Lyme disease incidence counties in Connecticut and New York, USA.

The 4-Poster Tick Control Deer Feeder (4-poster) device applies acaricide to white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and can reduce populations of the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis), which transmits the agents of Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Powassan virus disease in the Northeastern United States. While 4-poster devices have the potential to provide community-wide management of blacklegged ticks in Lyme disease endemic areas, no recent study has assessed their acceptability among residents. We conducted a survey of residents from 16 counties with high annual average Ly

Towards an attract-and-kill strategy for sustainable tick control: combined effects of Metarhizium anisopliae and phytochemical attractants from Senna didymobotrya against Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus.

Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus are ticks of veterinary and zoonotic importance in sub-Saharan Africa. Presently, their control mainly relies on synthetic acaricides, which are limited by resistance and environmental harm. Sustainable alternatives, such as combining tick attractants with entomopathogenic fungi in attract-and-kill strategies, are therefore needed. This study aimed to determine (i) the effect of attractants from Senna didymobotrya (methanol extract of S. didymobotrya flowers, squalene, linoleic acid, and squalene: linoleic acid (1:1) blend) on Metarhizium a
