The impact of climate change on ecology of tick associated with tick-borne diseases.

Infectious diseases have caused significant economic and human losses worldwide. Growing concerns exist regarding climate change potentially exacerbating the spread of these diseases, particularly those transmitted by vectors such as ticks and mosquitoes. Tick-borne diseases, such as Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), can be particularly detrimental to elderly and immunocompromised individuals. This study utilizes a mathematical modeling approach to predict changes in tick populations under climate change scenarios, incorporating tick ecology and climate-sensitive parameters.

Virome analysis and detection of ticks and tick-borne viruses in Shanghai, China.

INTRODUCTION: Ticks are well-known ectoparasites and vectors responsible for transmitting a diverse range of pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and protozoa, many of which pose substantial risks to public health and livestock. In recent decades, the incidence and diversity of tick-borne diseases have increased globally, with several novel tick-borne viruses (TBVs) being discovered. METHODS: This study aimed to characterize the virome of ticks collected from various locations in Shanghai, China, using next-generation sequencing (NGS). A total of 2,568 ticks belonging to three dominant spe

Canine Ticks, Tick-Borne Pathogens and Associated Risk Factors in Nigeria.

Tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) pose a significant threat to canine health in Nigeria. Despite this, there is little data on the molecular identification of ticks and TBPs of dogs in Nigeria. This study assessed the prevalence of ticks and TBPs in Nigerian dogs, along with associated risk factors. A total of 259 dogs were enrolled in the study, from which 112 adult ticks were collected. Of these, 40 were characterized by molecular barcoding confirming Rhipicephalus sanguineus (R. sanguineus, 35/40) and Haemphysalis leachi (H. leachi, 5/40) infestations. Nucleotide sequences showed high percentage

Ticks and prevalence of tick-borne pathogens from domestic animals in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are important vectors of various pathogenic protozoa, bacteria and viruses that cause serious and life-threatening illnesses in humans and animals worldwide. Estimating tick-borne pathogen prevalence in tick populations is necessary to delineate how geographical differences, environmental variability and host factors influence pathogen prevalence and transmission. This study identified ticks and tick-borne pathogens in samples collected from June 2016 to December 2017 at seven sites within the Coastal, Sudan and Guinea savanna ecological zones of Ghana. METHODS: A total of 2

Tick gut barriers impacting tick-microbe interactions and pathogen persistence.

Ticks are regarded as one of the most ancient, unique, and highly evolved ectoparasites. They can parasitize diverse vertebrates and transmit a number of widespread infections. Once acquired from infected hosts, many tick-borne pathogens, like Borrelia burgdorferi, are confined within the tick gut lumen and are surrounded by discrete gut barriers. Such barriers include the peritrophic membrane (PM) and the dityrosine network (DTN), which are in close contact with resident microbiota and invading pathogens, influencing their survival within the vector. Herein, we review our current state of kno

Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases in Cuba, Half a Century of Scientific Research.

Ticks and the vast array of pathogens they transmit, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths, constitute a growing burden for human and animal health worldwide. In Cuba, the major tropical island in the Caribbean, ticks are an important cause of vector-borne diseases affecting livestock production, pet animal health and, to a lesser extent, human health. The higher number of tick species in the country belong to the Argasidae family and, probably less known, is the presence of an autochthonous tick species in the island, Ixodes capromydis. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review

Widespread distribution of ticks and selected tick-borne pathogens in Kentucky (USA).

The geographical distribution of Ixodes scapularis and Amblyomma maculatum ticks is poorly understood in Kentucky. We conducted a convenience survey of wildlife species (white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), elk (Cervus canadensis) and black bears (Ursus americanus)) for ticks from October 2015 to January 2017. We detected four tick species including Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor albipictus, I. scapularis and A. maculatum. Although the former two tick species were previously known to be widely distributed in Kentucky, we also found that I. scapularis and A. maculatum were also widesp

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding ticks and tick-borne diseases, Finland.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme borreliosis (LB) are endemic in Finland, with tens and thousands of cases, respectively, reported annually. We performed a field survey to investigate people's knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding ticks, tick-borne diseases, and prevention strategies. The KAP were assessed using a pre-validated anonymous questionnaire consisting of 39 questions and statements. On two consecutive days in July 2016, convenience sampling was used in the cities of Parainen and Kotka, located in high-risk areas of tick-borne diseases, particularly of TBE. In atti

Metabolomics of the tick-Borrelia interaction during the nymphal tick blood meal.

The causal agents of Lyme disease in North America, Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia mayonii, are transmitted primarily by Ixodes scapularis ticks. Due to their limited metabolic capacity, spirochetes rely on the tick blood meal for nutrients and metabolic intermediates while residing in the tick vector, competing with the tick for nutrients in the blood meal. Metabolomics is an effective methodology to explore dynamics of spirochete survival and multiplication in tick vectors before transmission to a vertebrate host via tick saliva. Using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, we i

Human Tick-Borne Encephalitis and Characterization of Virus from Biting Tick.

We report a case of human tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in which the TBE virus was isolated from the biting tick. Viral growth and sequence were characterized and compared with those of a reference strain. Virus isolation from ticks from patients with TBE may offer a new approach for studies of epidemiology and pathogenicity.

Identification of tick-borne encephalitis virus in ticks collected in southeastern Hungary.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is an arthropod-borne viral pathogen causing infections in Europe and is responsible for most arbovirus central nervous system infections in Hungary. Assessing the TBEV prevalence in ticks through detection of genomic RNA is a broadly accepted approach to estimate the transmission risk from a tick bite. For this purpose, 2731 ticks were collected from the neighboring area of the town of Dévaványa, located in southeastern Hungary, which is considered a low-risk-transmission area for TBEV. Altogether, 2300 ticks were collected from the vegetation, while 431 w

Prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus in ticks from southern Korea.

The prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in southern Korea was determined by collecting ticks using tick drags. A total of 4,077 of 6,788 ticks collected were pooled (649 pools) according to collection site, species, and developmental stage and assayed for TBEV. The TBEV protein E and NS5 gene fragments were detected using RT-nested PCR in six pools of nymphs collected from Jeju Island (2,491 ticks). The minimum field detection rates for TBEV were 0.17% and 0.14% for Haemaphysalis longicornis and Haemayphysalis. flava nymphs, respectively. The 252 bp NS5 and 477 bp protein E gene

Diagnosis and treatment of tick infestation and tick-borne diseases with cutaneous manifestations.

Hard and soft ticks may be associated directly or indirectly with a number of dermatoses, both infectious and inflammatory in origin. Morbidity may occur as a result of tick bites, tick toxicosis, and even infestation. These arthropod vectors may transmit life-threatening protozoan, bacterial, rickettsial, and viral diseases with systemic and cutaneous findings. Additionally, ticks may transmit more than one pathogen with subsequent human coinfection. This article reviews the presentation of tick-borne illnesses and the medical management of these diseases. Among others, diseases such as ehrli

Tick-borne encephalitis virus infections in Lithuanian domestic animals and ticks.

In order to obtain information about the distribution of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in Lithuania, sera of domestic animals were screened for TBEV antibodies by haemagglutination inhibition test. Samples were collected in 2001 from 423 cows, 561 goats and 118 sheep during a prophylactic examination or vaccination by a local veterinary specialist. In addition, a total of 3234 Ixodes ricinus ticks in 436 pools were collected and tested by RT-PCR for the presence of TBEV RNA (detailed analysis with genetic characterization is published separately [Han et al, J Med Virol 2005 (in press)])

Prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis virus in Ixodes ricinus ticks in Finland.

Approximately 20 cases of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) occur annually in Finland. The known endemic areas are situated mainly in the archipelago and coastal regions of Finland, with highest incidence in Aland islands. Ixodes ricinus panels collected in 1996-1997 from two endemic areas were screened for the presence of RNA. Two distinct RT-PCR methods were applied, and were shown to have an approximate detection limit of 10 focus forming doses (FFD)/100 microl. One out of 20 pools (a total of 139 ticks) from Helsinki Isosaari Island and one out of 48 pools (a total of 450 ticks) from Aland wer

Seasonal population dynamics of ixodes ticks and tick-borne encephalitis virus.

Seasonality of the epidemic and epizootic processes of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) depend on the period of activity of ixodid ticks Ixodes persulcatus Schulze and I. ricinus Linnaeus, which are the main reservoirs and vectors of TBE virus, and also on the process of their activation. The period of activity is the period during which the ticks occur in the active state. Activation is the transition into this state of ticks that moulted from the preceding stage and completed post-moulting development. For I. persulcatus, the first adult ticks generally emerge between April 10 and May 9. Under
