Gender Differences in Psychosocial Outcomes of Hair Loss Resulting from Childhood Irradiation for Tinea Capitis.

Recent studies have linked hair loss due to childhood irradiation for tinea capitis, a fungal infection of the scalp, to adverse psychosocial and health outcomes in women. However, no study to date has examined gender differences in the outcomes of this type of hair loss. The current study aimed to investigate gender differences in health and psychosocial outcomes of hair loss resulting from childhood irradiation for tinea capitis, and to identify the risk factors associated with depression in both men and women. Medical records held at the archives of the Israel National Center for Compensati

Three Skulls Dating from the French Revolutionary Years Diagnosed with Tinea Capitis: A Paleopathologic Approach.

The Musée Dupuytren was a Parisian pathology museum established in 1835. This museum hosted 3 skulls with severe craniofacial lesions initially tagged as aggressive forms of tinea capitis. The aim of this study was to investigate these specimens and discuss the initial diagnosis. Historical investigations were conducted based on the biographic data from the tags of the 3 skulls and entries on the catalog of the museum. Age was determined using dentition and the patency of cranial base synchondroses. The computed tomography scans were performed using standard medical devices. The 3 skulls were

Alert on imported fungal infection: the first report of tinea capitis due to Microsporum audouinii in China.

We report cases of Microsporum audouinii infections on the scalp of three individuals from an African family, originating from Mali and residing in Guangzhou. This is the first time that M. audouinii has been reported in China. The index case involved a 2-year-old boy who presented with scalp patches and scaling for more than 1 year. Dermatological examination revealed scattered dark brown patches with scales on the scalp without noticeable alopecia or pustules. Fungal microscopy revealed the presence of Ectothrix hyphae and abundant clusters of arthroconidia. On Sabouraud Dextrose Agar, pale

Comparative analysis of whole genomes and transcriptomes of Microsporum canis from invasive dermatophytosis and tinea capitis.

ABSTRACTGenomes of strains of the zoophilic dermatophyte Microsporum canis from invasive (disseminated and subcutaneous) and noninvasive (tinea capitis) infections were compared. Especially the disseminated strain showed significant syntenic rearrangements, including multiple translocations and inversions, and numerous SNPs and Indels in comparison to the noninvasive strain. In transcriptome analysis, both invasive strains were enriched for GO pathways related to components of the membrane, iron binding and heme binding, which possibly enables them to invade deeper into dermis and blood vessel

[Profile of basal cell carcinomas of the scalp after radiotherapy for tinea capitis (about 63 cases)].

The induction of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the scalp by X-ray therapy for tinea capitis is well known. The aim of the study was to specify the epidemiological, clinical and histological characteristics of this disease. In a retrospective study, we collected data from the files of 63 patients, with a history of radiotherapy for tinea capitis, followed between January 1995 and December 2004. Fifty one men and 12 women with a total of 108 BCC of the scalp are reported (1.76 lesion per patient and 1.13 cm on average of diameter). The mean age at the occurrence of the BCC was 45.5 years. Thirty

Unravelling Childhood Tinea Capitis: A Multi-Dimensional Investigation Using Dermoscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Mass Spectrometry.

Tinea capitis, a common cutaneous fungal infection, shows an increasing prevalence with the increasing number of pets. We present tinea capitis in a 4-year-old girl presenting without typical symptoms such as alopecia or hair breakage. After a comprehensive evaluation including dermoscopy, Wood's light, direct KOH fluorescent staining, scanning electron microscopy, fungal culture and mass spectrometry analysis, a diagnosis of tinea capitis infected Microsporum canis carried by domestic cats was made. We preliminarily explored the two modes of hair erosion by tinea capitis fungi and analyzed th

Tinea capitis in Older Adults: A Neglected and Misdiagnosed Scalp Infection-A Systematic Review of Reported Cases.

Background/Objectives: Tinea capitis is traditionally a childhood infection, yet recent reports describe its emergence among older adults. In this population, hormonal changes, comorbidities, and frequent corticosteroid use may modify clinical presentation and delay diagnosis. This systematic review aimed to consolidate current evidence on Tinea capitis in individuals aged 65 years or older, focusing on epidemiologic, clinical, and mycological characteristics as well as therapeutic outcomes. Methods: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus,

Inflammatory tinea capitis mimicking dissecting cellulitis in a postpubertal male: a case report and review of the literature.

Tinea capitis in postpubertal patients is unusual and may be misdiagnosed as dissecting cellulitis. We report a case of a healthy 19-year-old Hispanic male presenting with a 2-month history of a large, painful subcutaneous boggy plaque on the scalp with patchy alopecia, erythematous papules, cysts and pustules. Although initially diagnosed as dissecting cellulitis, potassium hydroxide evaluation (KOH preparation) of the hair from the affected region was positive. A punch biopsy of the scalp demonstrated endothrix consistent with tinea capitis, but with a brisk, deep mixed inflammatory infiltra

[A case of tinea capitis with a couple of nodular lesions possibly resulting from topical application of tacrolimus].

We herein report a case of tinea capitis initially showing a couple of nodular lesions. The patient was a 66-year-old woman who had seen a nearby dermatologist for itching on her head and had been treated with a topical steroid followed by tacrolimus application for one month. Because pseudolymphoma-like erythematous nodules developed at two sites, she visited us. Two weeks after stopping all medication, some slight scaling was found around these nodules. On KOH direct microscopic examination, many filamentous elements around hair shafts were observed. Biopsy of the nodules confirmed the destr

Tumors and other diseases following childhood x-ray treatment for ringworm of the scalp (Tinea capitis).

The objective of the study is to characterize the risk of tumors from radiation exposure to the head and neck. A cohort of 2,224 children given x-ray treatment and 1,380 given only topical medications for ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis) during 1940-1959 have been followed up for a median of 39 y to determine tumor incidence. Follow-ups were by mail/telephone questionnaire, with 84-88% of the original cohort followed and with medical verification of diseases of interest. Sixteen intracranial tumors [7 brain cancers, 4 meningiomas, and 5 acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas)] occurred

Long-Term Effects of Exposure to Ionizing Irradiation on Periodontal Health Status - The Tinea capitis Cohort Study.

Studies among long-term survivors of childhood cancer who had received high-dose irradiation therapy of 4-60 Gy, demonstrated acute and chronic dental effects, including periodontal diseases. However, the possible effects of low to moderate doses of radiation on dental health are sparse. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between childhood exposure to low-moderate doses of ionizing radiation and periodontal health following 50 years since exposure. The study population included 253 irradiated subjects (treated for Tinea capitis in the 1950s) and, 162 non-irradiated subject

Dermoscopic Features of Tinea Capitis in Korean Patients: Correlation With Clinical Subtypes, Age Groups and Causative Dermatophytes.

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis (TC) presents with diverse clinical manifestations that may complicate diagnosis. Dermoscopy is a useful adjunctive tool, but data correlating dermoscopic findings with clinical and mycological characteristics in Korean patients remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To characterize dermoscopic features of TC in Korean patients and evaluate their associations with clinical subtypes, age distributions and causative dermatophytes. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 71 patients with mycologically confirmed TC diagnosed between 2011 and 2025. Dermoscopic patterns were compared ac

Elongated Corkscrew Hairs as a Possible Novel Trichoscopic Sign in Endothrix Tinea Capitis Affecting Adults with Immunosuppression.

INTRODUCTION: Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp in which trichoscopy plays an important role by allowing early identification of characteristic hair shaft alterations before mycological confirmation. METHODS: We describe two adult women who are immunosuppressed with endothrix tinea capitis caused by Trichophyton violaceum. RESULTS: Both patients presented with diffuse scalp alopecia and scaling. Trichoscopic examination revealed unusually elongated corkscrew hairs, and fungal cultures confirmed the diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: Elongated corkscrew hairs represent a previously unrep

Expression Profiles of Protease in Onychomycosis-Related Pathogenic Trichophyton rubrum and Tinea Capitis-Related Pathogenic Trichophyton violaceum.

The two fungal species Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton violaceum are common pathogens on human, infecting keratinized tissue of the outer body parts. Both species are belonging to the "Trichophyton rubrum complex" and share very high similarity in the genome. Secreted proteinases, key factors for keratin degradation, are nearly identical. Contrary, the ecological niches are differing. Trichophyton rubrum preferably infects skin and nails, whereas T. violaceum preferably infects the scalp. We postulate, that differences in the protease expression contribute to differences in ecological pre

Long-term follow-up for brain tumor development after childhood exposure to ionizing radiation for tinea capitis.

Ionizing radiation is an established risk factor for brain tumors, yet quantitative information on the long-term risk of different types of brain tumors is sparse. Our aims were to assess the risk of radiation-induced malignant brain tumors and benign meningiomas after childhood exposure and to investigate the role of potential modifiers of that risk. The study population included 10,834 individuals who were treated for tinea capitis with X rays in the 1950s and two matched nonirradiated groups, comprising population and sibling comparison groups. The mean estimated radiation dose to the brain

Trichoscopy as a useful method to differentiate tinea capitis from alopecia areata in children at Zagazig University Hospitals.

Trichoscopy corresponds to the scalp, and hair dermoscopy has been increasingly used as an aid in the diagnosis, follow-up, and prognosis of hair disorders. Trichoscopy represents a valuable link between clinical and histological diagnosis. Tinea capitis (TC) and alopecia areata (AA) are considered the most common causes of hairless patches of the scalp in pediatrics. TC may have the same clinical appearance of AA, so dermoscopy has recently become a useful diagnostic tool for AA and TC, particularly in doubtful cases. The aim of this study is to identify the trichoscopic features of TC and AA
