Neisseria meningitidis Serogroup C Clonal Complex 10217 Outbreak in West Kpendjal Prefecture, Togo 2019.

Togo has reported seasonal meningitis outbreaks caused by non-Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A (NmA) pathogens since the introduction of meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine (MACV, MenAfriVac) in 2014. From 2016 to 2017, NmW caused several outbreaks. In early 2019, a NmC outbreak was detected in the Savanes region of Togo and its investigation is described here. Under case-based surveillance, epidemiological and clinical data, and cerebrospinal fluid specimens were collected for every suspected case of meningitis. Specimens were tested for meningitis pathogens using confirmatory micro

Pneumococcal serotype distribution among meningitis cases from Togo and Burkina Faso during 2007-2009.

We evaluated pneumococcal serotype/group distribution using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing on cerebrospinal fluid collected from patients from Burkina Faso and Togo who presented for care during 2007-2009. We identified 282 pneumococcal meningitis cases based on PCR, latex agglutination, or culture, of which 206 underwent serotyping. Serotype 1 was identified for 18% of serotyped cases from patients aged <5 years and 66% of those aged ≥5 years. The 13-valent and 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV-13 and PCV-10) contain 53% of serotypes identified among children age <5 year

[Rare muscular localization of tuberculosis mimicking a cervical tumor: a case report from Togo].

OBJECTIVE: The detection of tuberculosis in an apparently isolated location, such as the sternocleidomastoid muscle, is exceptional. It can be mistaken for a cervical tumor. This report presents a case with its diagnostic and therapeutic particularities. OBSERVATION: An immunocompetent patient presented with right anterolateral cervical swelling, which was suggestive of a thyroid tumor. Paraclinical investigations revealed tuberculosis of the right sternocleidomastoid muscle and a latent homolateral pulmonary focus. The patient responded well to medical treatment. CONCLUSION: Muscular tuberc

Molecular characterization of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) in women in Lomé, Togo.

BACKGROUND: The causative agent of cervical cancer referred to as Human papillomavirus (HPV) remains a real public health problem. Many countries in West Africa, such as Togo have no data on the high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection and genotypes distribution. In order to fill the knowledge gap in the field in Togo, the main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of pre-cancerous lesions of the cervix and HR-HPV genotypes among Togolese women. METHODS: Samples were collected from 240 women by introducing a swab in the cervix. Then, the screening of precancerous cervical lesions us

Trapping Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Moths in Different Crop Habitats in Togo and Ghana.

The economic impact of the invasion of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) into Africa has so far been limited to maize agriculture but could potentially impact many other crops. Trapping based on pheromone lures provides a cost-effective method for detecting this important pest (commonly known as fall armyworm) and will be essential for large-scale monitoring of populations to determine its geographical distribution and migration behavior as the species equilibrates to its new environment. However, the effective use of pheromone trapping requires optimization for a give

Natural immunity against capsular group X N. meningitidis following an outbreak in Togo, 2007.

BACKGROUND: Capsular group X N. meningitidis (MenX) has emerged as a cause of localized disease outbreaks in sub-Saharan Africa, but the human immune response following exposure to MenX antigens is poorly described. We therefore assessed the natural immunity against MenX in individuals who were living in an area affected by a MenX outbreak during 2007 in Togo, West Africa. During 2009, 300 healthy individuals (100 aged 3-5 years, 100 aged 13-19 years and 100 aged 20-25 years) were included in the study, and serum responses were compared with sera from age-matched controls from the U.K. and Bur

Formal and informal antimicrobial trade and usage in farmed animals of the urban area of Lomé, Togo.

Inappropriate antibiotic use in livestock is a key driver of antimicrobial resistance. Surveillance and prevention efforts in low-income countries are challenged by widespread informal sales and administration. We investigated the antibiotics trade network for farm animals and farmers' antibiotic purchasing and usage behaviors in an urban region with high human and animal population density and prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 116 farmers in Lomé, Togo, in areas where multidrug-resistant bacteria had been identified. Using multiple-factor ana

Reaching elimination of onchocerciasis transmission with long-term vector control and ivermectin treatment in Togo.

The Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa implemented vector control (VC) and ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA) to eliminate blindness, intensifying efforts in Special Intervention Zones (SIZ). Togo aims to eliminate onchocerciasis transmission (EOT) by 2030. We use the EPIONCHO-IBM model to project microfilarial prevalence trends across Togo's five regions by SIZ status, MDA coverage (65%-80%) and VC efficacy (60%-100%). We compare projections with prevalence surveys (400 villages, 1970-2017) stratified by hypoendemic, mesoendemic, hyperendemic, and holoendemic baseline ende

Influence of vodou rites and initiation practices on incidence of early pregnancy in the maritime region of Togo.

Togo, like other sub-Saharan African countries, is not spared from the phenomenon of teenage pregnancies. Each year, on average, about ten cases of teenage student pregnancies are recorded in schools. Despite multiple efforts by the Togolese government and non-governmental organizations to stem this phenomenon, it still persists and is growing. This paper aims to analyse the influence of the Vodou workshop practice on the occurrence of adolescent pregnancies. The paper relied on analysis of 105 Key Informant Interviews in four villages in the maritime region. The results reveal that the Vodou
