Diabetic retinopathy is a common diabetes complication representing a heavy burden in terms of visual impairment and heath expenditure. Optical coherence tomography angiography is a relatively new imaging method and has proven to be a powerful tool in the analysis of diabetic retinopathy common features, including microaneurysms, intraretinal microvascular abnormalities, or neovascularization, as well as in research field, challenging the gold standard of fluorescein angiography. Many studies underlined the vascular impairment observed through optical coherence tomography angiography and its t

PURPOSE: To investigate the density of conjunctival blood vessels in normal eyes and in eyes with pinguecula or pterygium.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the conjunctival blood vessel density of 15 normal eyes, 15 pinguecula eyes, and 15 pterygium eyes of 43 healthy adults was assessed using optical coherence tomography angiography with an anterior segment lens adapter. The nasal surface of each eye (3 × 3 mm) was scanned 3 times to a depth of 800 μm. Conjunctival vessel density was defined as the percent of the scanned volume occupied by vessels in which blood flow was measured.

High-resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) with spectral-domain or swept-source techniques has become a mainstay in glaucoma and progression diagnosis. Imaging and morphometry of ganglion cell (GCL) and retinal nerve fiber (RNF) layer thickness and Bruch's membrane based minimum neuroretinal rim width (BMO-MRW) measurement allow the detection of pathologic changes. Graphic display of these measurements facilitate a comparison with normative data. False positive (red disease) and false negative (green disease) results represent pitfalls in OCT diagnosis. Pathologies of the posterior pol

A diagnostic sign refers to a quantifiable biological parameter that is measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological, pathogenic, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic intervention. When used in translational research discussions, the term itself often alludes to a sign used to accelerate or aid in diagnosis or monitoring and provide insight into "personalized" medicine. Many new diagnostic signs are being developed that involve imaging technology. Optical coherence tomography is an imaging technique that provides in vivo quasi-histological images of the ocular tissues and

Lacrimal canaliculus (LC) has a key role in tear drainage, but it is difficult to evaluate the LC in detail, using the existing examinations. In this study, our novel LC imaging technique provided the high-resolution images of LC in a non-invasive manner. Three-dimensional images of LC were acquired via the palpebral conjunctiva from 20 healthy volunteers (20 eyes) and 10 patients with various lacrimal disorders (10 eyes), using optical coherence tomography (OCT) dacryography (OCTD). The LC images showed morphological differences between the vertical and horizontal segments. The function of LC

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a prevalent, interferometric, high-resolution imaging method with broad biomedical applications. Nonetheless, OCT images suffer from an artifact called speckle, which degrades the image quality. Digital filters offer an opportunity for image improvement in clinical OCT devices, where hardware modification to enhance images is expensive. To reduce speckle, a wide variety of digital filters have been proposed; selecting the most appropriate filter for an OCT image/image set is a challenging decision, especially in dermatology applications of OCT where a diff

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) is an emerging technology that allows for the non-invasive imaging of the ocular microvasculature. Despite the wealth of observations and numerous research studies illustrating the potential clinical uses of OCT-A, this technique is currently rarely used in routine clinical settings. In this review, technical and clinical aspects of OCT-A imaging are discussed, and the future clinical potential of OCT-A is considered. An understanding of the basic principles and limitations of OCT-A technology will better inform clinicians of its future potentia

Intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) is a noninvasive imaging modality that provides a real-time dynamic feedback of the various surgical steps. Comprehensive literature search was performed in MEDLINE using "intraoperative optical coherence tomography" and "iOCT" as keywords. The use of iOCT as an aid to decision-making has been successfully reported in cases undergoing keratoplasty, implantable Collamer lens (ICL) implantation as well as cataract surgery. iOCT helps to assess the graft-host relationship in penetrating keratoplasty. It helps confirm the presence of a big bubble,

The optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) microvascular features of branch and central retinal artery occlusion are described and correlated with fluorescein angiographic and clinical findings. There may be differences in the distribution of reduced vascular perfusion/flow between the superficial and deep retinal capillary plexuses in retinal artery occlusive disease. The extent of macular ischemia and the status of flow in the radial peripapillary capillaries can be evaluated with OCTA. Overall, OCTA can be used to monitor changes in vascular flow during the clinical course of retin

Recently, in vivo visualization of the cochlea and the smaller structures inside of it has been achieved by optical coherence tomography (OCT). This makes it possible to use OCT imaging for diagnosis of diseases such as Meniere's disease through measuring the degree of endolymphatic hydrops. To this end, we present a novel method for 3D segmentation of these cochlear OCT images that is based on superpixels and diffusion maps. The method takes as input grayscale volumetric OCT images and outputs a binary image with the segmented cochlea. We show that the proposed method is suitable for segmenti
