Orthodontic tooth movement in the mixed dentition. Histological study of a human specimen.

MATERIAL AND METHOD: We present a retrospective analysis of periodontal tissue reactions and clinically relevant phases of permanent tooth eruption and deciduous tooth resorption after half a year of orthodontic tooth movement in the upper and lower jaw of a deceased male (age 9 years 3 months). Specimens of the horizontal plane (lower jaw) and sagittal plane (upper jaw) were prepared by the ground microsection technique without prior decalcification. RESULTS: Histologically, reactions in the periodontal ligament presented as characteristic appositional/resorptive metaplastic processes in the

[A case of a so-called congenital tooth appeared in maxilla].

The congenital teeth are not only classified by Massler et al. as a natal tooth that has erupted at birth and a neonatal tooth that erupts at neonatal period, but also divided into a normal deciduous tooth and a supernumerary tooth. The congenital teeth are mostly found in the mandibular anterior region, but extremely rare in other regions. The authors met a rare case, that had a so-called congenital tooth in the maxillary anterior region, which was a supernumerary and fused tooth. The case was a boy patient, 4 months of age, who visited the pedodontic clinic, of Ohu University Dental Hospital

[How I treat… An open bite secondary to ankylosis of a primary molar tooth].

Infraclusion is a consequence of dentoalveolar ankylosis. Associated complications include extrusion of the opposing tooth, open bites, and tilts. Early detection and management are crucial to limit and/or correct these complications. Different therapeutic options exist when a deciduous tooth is ankylosed : preservation or extraction (with or without space closure). The goal of this article is to highlight the advantages of the injected composite technique for restoring the tooth when preservation has been chosen.

[Frequency of the developmental disturbances of tooth structure].

In permanent and deciduous dentitions, the frequency of congenitally missing teeth, supernumerary teeth, conical teeth, fused teeth, germinate teeth, abnormal tubercles (basal ridge of incisor or canine, central cusps of molars, Carabelli's cusp, protostylid, and para-molar tubercles), and enamel hypoplasia (white spots, pigmentation, and enamel defects) were surveyed. Furthermore, mesio-distal and bucco-lingual dimensions of the crowns were measured and the relationship between developmental disturbances of dental hard tissue and tooth size was examined. For the deciduous dentition, the frequ

Adenine nucleotide contents and ATPases activities in porcine deciduous dental pulp during the root formation, in fully formed root and during root resorption phases.

Nucleotide content and activity of certain enzymes were compared in pigs of various ages in order to study the energetic metabolism of deciduous dental pulps in the three phases of the cycle of tooth ontogeny, namely, root formation, fully formed root and root resorption phases. The frozen pulps were removed with the help of a screw vise and analysed for ATP, ADP and AMP contents and Ca2+ and Mg2+-ATPases activities. The highest ATP content in the first deciduous molar pulp was found when the tooth was still in an intrabony position. The calculated energy charge, although low for all groups, a

Unusual forms of collagen in human dentin.

Unusual fibrillar and segmental forms of collagen have been documented in several tissues, including rodent dentin - but not human dentin, which was analyzed here for the presence of such structures. Of six normal human permanent and deciduous teeth examined, cusps of two deciduous molars displayed atypical formations, designated here symmetrical collagen segments (SCSs). They were detected inside of dentinal tubules. It was evident that the 264-nm long, cross-banded SCSs were occasionally arranged vertically and laterally in a staggered manner into thick, irregularly shaped aggregates. Two de

Replantation of a Permanent Tooth With a Curved Root From Infected Tooth Germ: A Case Report With a Four-Year Follow-Up.

Intentional reimplantation has long been supported by many clinicians as a last resort before tooth extraction. With the accumulation of data and the development of techniques, the survival rate of reimplantation has increased. However, although there have been many reports and studies on replantation for common causes such as root fracture, root resorption, inadequate root canal treatment, perforation, and apical periodontitis, the method of replantation in unusual cases is not yet clear, and many cases result in tooth extraction. In this report, we describe a special case in which a patient

Distant consequences of traumatic injuries to deciduous teeth--a case report.

The ever increasing number of injuries to deciduous teeth in children constitutes a serious problem in paedodontics. Among many factors that facilitate tooth injuries are malocclusions, and most specifically protrusions of upper incisors of Class II/1 according to Angle. This is a case report of a 6-year-old girl with irregularities of upper permanent incisors due to traumatic injuries to deciduous teeth. In view of the ongoing child development processes, medical check-ups following injuries to deciduous teeth should be undertaken once every two or three months. Since such injuries have an im

Role of inflammation in developmental odontogenic pathosis.

Periapical infection in the primary tooth may lead to periapical abscess, granuloma, radicular cyst and even osteomyelitis. The infection in primary teeth can also affect the developing successor teeth leading to hypomineralization, hypoplasia, arrest of tooth development, regional odontodysplasia, delayed eruption etc. The purpose of this article is to report a case of malformed permanent tooth in relation to overlying infected deciduous teeth. The probable role of inflammation in pathogenesis of the present condition is also being discussed.

A rare case of unerupted second deciduous molar located inferior to the second premolar: case report.

AIM: Tooth eruption is defined as the movement of a tooth from its site of development within the alveolar process to its functional position in the oral cavity [Massler et al., 1941]. The process of tooth eruption can be divided into different phases: pre-eruptive bone stage, alveolar bone stage, mucosal stage, preocclusal stage, occlusal stage and maturation stage [Andreasen et al., 1997]. Any disturbance in these phases can lead to eruptive anomalies. The incidence of unerupted teeth is usually higher among permanent teeth than among deciduous ones [Walker et al., 2004; Otsuka et al., 2001;

Circumstances favoring jaw tumors in Burkitt's lymphoma.

In Burkitt's lymphoma, dental structures may provide the route for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in saliva to penetrate the jaws, thereby promoting tumor formation. In children, EBV could enter tooth sockets exposed following deciduous tooth loss and thereby contact jaw marrow lymphocytes stimulating neoplastic transformation. Marrow contact by EBV probably also occurs through carious teeth. Jaw tumors are rare in adults because their jaw marrow is no longer hematopoietic and so lacks the lymphoid substrate for the virus. In adults, jaw marrow lymphocytosis, as accompanies infectious mononucleosis

Changes in the Distribution of Periodontal Nerve Fibers during Dentition Transition in the Cat.

The periodontal ligament has a rich sensory nerve supply which originates from the trigeminal ganglion and trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus. Although various types of mechanoreceptors have been reported in the periodontal ligament, the Ruffini ending is an essential one. It is unknown whether the distribution of periodontal nerve fibers in deciduous teeth is identical to that in permanent teeth or not. Moreover, morphological changes in the distribution of periodontal nerve fibers during resorption of deciduous teeth and eruption of successional permanent teeth in diphyodont animals have not b

Bilateral radicular cysts of mandibular deciduous teeth: a case report.

While common in adult teeth, radicular cysts are uncommon in deciduous teeth. When they do occur, they are associated with non-vital teeth and typically present 6 months to 5 years after vitality is lost. They cause swelling, bone-loss and permanent tooth bud displacement. Often, they are incidental findings. A case involving radicular cysts on the left and right sides of the mandible is presented. If non-vital deciduous teeth receive pulp therapy, regular post- operative reviews are recommended.

Caries prevalence and other dental pathological conditions in Vikings from Varnhem, Sweden.

In a late Swedish Viking Age population dating from around 10th-12th century AD, the prevalence, distribution and location of dental caries were studied. Tooth wear, other dental pathology and anatomical variations were identified and recorded clinically and radiographically. A total of 3293 teeth were analyzed from 171 individuals with complete and partial dentitions, of which 133 were permanent and 38 deciduous/mixed dentition. The dentitions were studied clinically, using a dental probe under a strong light source, and radiographs were taken for 18 of the individuals to verify and complemen

Association between teething and independent walking in healthy children.

Developing teeth provide a reliable indication of maturation and biological age. The objective of this study was to establish whether there is any association between the time of emergence of the first primary tooth and the time when independent walking occurs. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 206 healthy children (95 girls and 111 boys) aged 12 to 60 (mean: 29.79±0.66) months who were able to walk independently. The study was conducted using a questionnaire that was filled out by the parents. The first primary tooth emerged at 6.86±0.14 (min: 3-max: 13) months; the mean
