UNLABELLED: By definition, supplemental teeth are supernumerary teeth (ST) resembling adjacent teeth at the end of a tooth series and are well aligned in the arch. A case of the non-syndrome, supplemental type of supernumerary lateral incisor is presented, along with an unusual habit that was noted accidentally in the same child. In the present case, of the two lateral incisors, the mesial supplemental lateral incisor was causing an impaction of 11. In addition, the patient was aesthetically concerned. So, the decision was made to extract the supplemental tooth with altered morphology (mesial

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the frequency of and describe the clinical characteristics and complications of patients with nonsyndromic multiple mandibular supernumerary premolars.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among 110,500 patients seen between July 2003 and January 2007, 32 cases of multiple (2 or more) mandibular supernumerary premolars were found. Data including age, gender, number, distribution, and location of supernumerary premolars, extraction procedure, and related complications (such as cystic changes, root resorption, or adjacent teeth eruption disturbance) were coll

Several cases of the ectopic supernumerary tooth in the nasal cavity have been reported; however, an eruption of the primary maxillary tooth in the nose following trauma is extremely rare. Clinical evaluation and discriminating features on CT imaging, particularly with bone window setting, are sufficient to confirm the diagnosis. We discuss a case of deciduous central maxillary incisor in the nasal cavity and specifically focus on its clinical and radiological presentation. None of the previous authors have discussed probable theories of the post-traumatic intranasal tooth; we consider two pos

Supernumerary teeth occur in a wide variety of sites, including the palate, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, orbit, maxillary antrum, and nasal cavity. Supernumerary teeth manifest in different ways depending on the site. Reported symptoms and signs associated with supernumerary teeth in the nasal cavity (nasal teeth) include facial pain, external nasal deformities, foul-smelling rhinorrhea, recurrent epistaxis, and oronasal fistula. Very rarely, septal perforation has been reported. We present a case in which eruption of a tooth into the nasal cavity was associated with nasal septal perf

Supernumerary tooth/hyperdontia is defined as those teeth which are present in excess of the usual distribution of twenty deciduous and thirty-two permanent teeth. It can be seen in both syndromic and nonsyndromic patients. In Nepalese population, prevalence of supernumerary tooth is documented to be 1.6%. To the best of our knowledge, no studies from Nepal have reported the incidence of bilateral maxillary paramolars or the combination of unilateral maxillary paramolar and distomolar till date. Hence, we are reporting these two cases with a brief review of literature to put emphasis on incide

Tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndromes (TRPS) are caused by mutation or deletion of TRPS1, a gene encoding a GATA transcription factor. These disorders are characterized by abnormalities of the hair, face, and selected bones. Rare cases of individuals with TRPS displaying supernumerary teeth have been reported, but none of these has been examined molecularly. We used two different approaches to investigate a possible role of TRPS1 during tooth development. We looked at the expression of Tprs1 during mouse tooth development and analyzed the craniofacial defects of Trps1 mutant mice. In parallel, we

Supernumerary teeth are those that form in excess to the normal dental formula and while there is no clear pathogenesis for their formation, they are known to vary in size, morphology, location and presentation. We present two cases of otherwise healthy patients who presented with pain, discomfort and discharge from the nasal passages. CT imaging identified a tooth-like density present in the bone of the nasal floor in both patients. In both cases, the tooth was extracted surgically under anaesthetic. A symptomatic supernumerary in the nasal floor might cause a plethora of symptoms and complic

Primary cilia function as critical sensory organelles that mediate multiple signaling pathways, including the Hedgehog (Hh) pathway, which is essential for organ patterning and morphogenesis. Disruptions in Hh signaling have been implicated in supernumerary tooth formation and molar fusion in mutant mice. Cilk1, a highly conserved serine/threonine-protein kinase localized within primary cilia, plays a critical role in ciliary transport. Loss of Cilk1 results in severe ciliopathy phenotypes, including polydactyly, edema, and cleft palate. However, the role of Cilk1 in tooth development remains

AIM: To assess the morphology of supernumerary lateral incisors and describe the concomitant malocclusion.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Intraoral examination and analysis of panoramic views as well as study casts has been proceeded in 18 patients with supernumerary laterals. The widths of the normal and supernumerary laterals were measured.
RESULTS: 20 supernumerary incisors were found (in 2 patients - bilateral). In 1 patient - the width of the supernumerary tooth was the same as this of the adjacent normal teeth and in 12 patients - the widths were lower. In cases of unilateral hyperdontia, 4 of

BACKGROUND: Supernumerary teeth (SPNs), as common odontogenic developmental anomalies, not only cause local complications such as dental crowding and impaction but also serve as key oral manifestations of multiple genetic syndromes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of multiple SPNs (7 teeth with an odontoma) in a 17-year-old Chinese male who presented without any genetic syndromes. Clinical examination revealed a permanent dentition exhibiting Angle Class II malocclusion with dental crowding, featuring an ectopically erupted tooth 34 positioned lingual to tooth 35, two supernumerary teeth i

BACKGROUND: A supernumerary tooth is an extra tooth above the normal number, of which approximately 90% occur in the premaxillary region and show rudimentary forms of crown morphology. Most cases occur singly, with bilateral occurrence in the maxillary canine regions very rare in children with no other associated diseases or syndromes.
CASE REPORT: A case of a 14-year-old boy with bilateral supernumerary teeth with normal crown shapes in both the maxillary canine and mandibular premolar regions. The supernumerary teeth in the maxilla were diagnosed at 12.2 years of age and in the mandible at

We report a case of secondary alveolar bone grafting (ABG) without removal of a supernumerary tooth in a patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate. A conical supernumerary tooth located distal to the upper left central incisor within the cleft site was left in situ at the time of ABG. The tooth within the ABG site commenced resorption from both the apical and incisal edges until only minor tooth remnants remained at 22 months. Although external root resorption of teeth neighboring a cleft site has been described previously, this is the first report of almost complete tooth resorption follow

Multiple supernumerary teeth are usually associated with syndromes. On the contrary, multiple supernumerary teeth without association with any syndromes are very rare. This article presents a report of two cases with multiple supernumerary teeth not associated with any syndrome and emphasizes the routine advice of orthopantomogram whenever a single supernumerary tooth is detected irrespective of whether the patient has any syndrome or not.

The congenital teeth are not only classified by Massler et al. as a natal tooth that has erupted at birth and a neonatal tooth that erupts at neonatal period, but also divided into a normal deciduous tooth and a supernumerary tooth. The congenital teeth are mostly found in the mandibular anterior region, but extremely rare in other regions. The authors met a rare case, that had a so-called congenital tooth in the maxillary anterior region, which was a supernumerary and fused tooth. The case was a boy patient, 4 months of age, who visited the pedodontic clinic, of Ohu University Dental Hospital

The mesiodens is the most common supernumerary tooth. It can be found in both the erupted and the impacted states. A case of a developing mesiodens located entirely in soft tissue is described. The lesion presented as a pedunculated palatal mass. No case of soft-tissue mesiodens has been previously reported. A theory of origin for this supernumerary tooth is proposed.

We re-examined tooth variation in specimens of the Siberian mole, Talpa altaica, from the collection of the Siberian Zoological Museum and discuss the mechanisms of dental evolution. The number of teeth counted in 1789 specimens ranged from 34 to 47, and supernumerary, absent, and connate teeth were observed. The most frequent tooth anomaly was an absent tooth in the premolar region (200 maxillary first premolars and 190 mandibular third premolars), which does not support Fujita and Kirino's terminal reduction hypothesis in the mandible [Fujita T, Kirino T. BACKGROUND: Although tooth agenesis has been consistently associated with reduced craniofacial size, the craniofacial implications of supernumerary teeth remain unexplored. This study aimed to assess whether the presence, number, and location of supernumerary teeth are associated with craniofacial size in non-syndromic individuals, and whether these effects differ by sex.
METHODS: A retrospective multicenter study was performed using > 10,000 orthodontic records from Switzerland and Greece (2002-2023). The sample included 200 individuals with supernumerary teeth (125 males, 75 females; mean a
