PURPOSE: The history of dentistry is not short; it started from ancient Egypt to ancient Romans and ancient Greeks. When it comes to extraction, all of them have made their own discoveries and progress. The progress they made also helped dentistry to move ahead in evolution of new extraction technique - the Physics Forceps. We have assessed the viability in using the Physics Forceps for routine dental extraction in our study for a period of 1 year.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was conducted on 241 patients indicated for extraction based on our inclusion criteria using Physics Forceps afte

BACKGROUND: More than 10 years have passed since the first nationwide study on the reasons for tooth extraction in Japan. In the present study, we conducted the second nationwide survey to update the previous data.
METHODS: This was a descriptive study. A sample population consisting of 5,250 dentists was selected by systematic random sampling using the 2018 membership directory of the Japan Dental Association. The reason for each permanent tooth extraction was documented by each dentist during a period of 1 week from June 4 to June 10, 2018. A questionnaire was provided for documentation. Re

Teeth with root fracture generally have a poor prognosis requiring extraction; however, some patients do not wish to have these teeth extracted. Dentists do not have enough information regarding the prognosis of teeth with root fracture. This study retrospectively examined the prognosis of teeth with root fracture in the maintenance phase of periodontal treatment and assessed the factors influencing the prognosis of teeth with root fracture. The clinical records of 100 patients, who had entered the maintenance phase of periodontal therapy in a university hospital and had experienced fracture o

This article presents a case of a palatogingival groove (PPG) in tooth No. 12 that was misdiagnosed as a mutilated root fracture. A PPG is a developmental anomaly that predisposes a tooth to a severe periodontal defect. The initial diagnosis of mutilated root fracture on tooth No. 12 was made solely from radiographs that showed a vertical and horizontal radiolucent line with a radiolucent halo-shaped bone resorption in relation to the root apex. Transillumination, bite test, surgical visualization of the site, and the use of high-end diagnostic modalitieswere not considered prior to the final

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of GPT-4o in identifying nine common dental conditions on panoramic radiographs, both overall and at specific tooth sites, and to assess whether the use of different tooth numbering systems (FDI and Universal) in prompts would affect its diagnostic accuracy. Methods: Fifty panoramic radiographs exhibiting various common dental conditions including missing teeth, impacted teeth, caries, endodontically treated teeth, teeth with restorations, periapical lesions, periodontal bone loss, tooth fractures, cracks, retained roots, dental

Instead of extraction this case report presents an alternative treatment option for a maxillary incisor with a vertical root fracture (VRF) causing pain in a 78-year-old patient. After retreatment of the existing root canal filling the tooth was stabilized with a dentine adhesive and a composite restoration. Then the tooth was extracted, the VRF gap enlarged with a small diamond bur and the existing retrograde root canal filling removed. The enlarged fracture line and the retrograde preparation were filled with a calcium-silicate-cement (Biodentine). Afterwards the tooth was replanted and a ti

A retrospective study of 622 patients (551 men and 71 women, age range 14-63 years) with 650 mandibular fractures crossing the third molar was conducted. In 183 patients (193 fracture lines) the wisdom tooth was retained or partially erupted and in 439 patients (457 fractures) the wisdom tooth in the fracture line was normally situated in the dentition. The analysis showed no statistically significant difference in the complication frequency associated with the extraction of retained or erupted wisdom teeth (12.50% and 8.37%, respectively). In treatment of fractures with retention of the wisdo

OBJECTIVE: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures in children can lead to severe aesthetic and functional complications, including pronounced facial asymmetry, visual impairment, associated ophthalmic injuries. The management of ZMC fractures in pediatric patients presents unique challenges. This article verified the feasibility of using absorbable plate through intraoral approach in the reduction and fixation of ZMC fractures in children.
METHODS: The operation was performed through the intraoral maxillary sulcus incisions. The 3D printed prototype and repaired models were used intraope

There has been a rise in incidence of dental trauma and crown fractures as reported in the literature. Children and teenagers are the most affected age groups, and the maxillary central incisors are the teeth most often affected. This article discusses reattachment techniques for the restoration of fractured teeth when the tooth fragment is recovered after a traumatic dental injury. This particular case study reports re-reattachment of a previously fractured and reattached tooth fragment.

BACKGROUND: Vertically fractured teeth often have a poor prognosis, and extraction is considered the most predictable treatment. Conventional management has consisted of preservation therapy involving extraction, bonding, root restoration, and replantation of fractured teeth. However, these methods fail to adequately address the periodontal tissue damage associated with root fractures. This report describes successful periodontal tissue regeneration using basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) combined with a carbonate apatite-based bone graft material (CaAp) as a scaffold during the replantat

For some wild canids, such as the Iberian wolf, there is a lack of in-depth knowledge about dental pathology. We aimed to evaluate it, in a standardized manner, in specimens from a Portuguese museum collection. Sixty-five deceased specimens of wild Iberian wolves, 61 complete skulls and 4 mandibles, collected in Portugal between 1977 and 1995, were analyzed. Sample comprised 18 females, 24 males and 23 individuals of undetermined sex. Teeth were evaluated by visual observation and dental radiography for tooth wear, periodontitis, fractures and other dental lesions. We have found several causes

AIM: To describe the innovative use of intentional replantation for Biodentine root reconstruction of a previously treated immature maxillary central incisor with vertically extended crown root fracture and root detachment.
SUMMARY: In the present case, the intentional replantation of a failing, previously treated maxillary central incisor with a vertical crown/root fracture in a 12-year-old male patient is reported. The gross extrusion of gutta-percha points beyond the apex and the pre-existing extensive, trauma related, distal cervical dentinal detachment justified the intentional replantat

Cracked teeth can pose a diagnostic dilemma for a clinician as they can mimic several other conditions. The constant physiological stress along with any pathological strain like trauma or iatrogenic causes can lead to the development of microcracks in the teeth. Constant exposure to immense stress can cause the progression of these often-undiagnosed tooth cracks to cause tooth fractures. This review aims to outline the etiology of tooth cracks, their classification, and recent advances in the diagnosis of enamel cracks. Diagnosing a cracked tooth can be an arduous task as symptoms differ accor

Knowledge on dental disorders in commercial sows is limited although such conditions may have important animal welfare implications. In a pilot study, the dental and periodontal health of 58 sows (Landrace*Yorkshire-crosses) from 8 Swedish commercial pig herds, slaughtered at one abattoir, were investigated. The oral cavity was inspected and abnormalities were recorded on a dental chart modified for pigs. Dental abnormalities, absence of teeth, supernumerary teeth, tooth fractures, signs of caries, and malalignment were recorded. The study revealed that 19% of the sows had supernumerary teeth

AIM: To report a maxillary central incisor tooth with a horizontal root fracture and incomplete root development that healed and was then moved orthodontically some years after the traumatic injury.
SUMMARY: A 7-year-old girl attended following trauma to the maxillary anterior region. Radiologic examination revealed a horizontal root fracture in the middle third of the maxillary right central incisor tooth that had an immature apex. After early treatment, the fractured tooth healed and pulpal health was retained. Recall examination after 2years revealed complete root development. Orthodontic

AIM: To investigate ex vivo the influence of the post system on fracture resistance and failure mode of root filled incisor, canine, premolar and molar teeth.
METHODOLOGY: Eighty human teeth were divided into eight groups (n = 10) resulting from the interaction between the two study factors: post system (glass fibre post; cast Ni-Cr alloy post and core) and type of tooth (maxillary incisors, maxillary canines, maxillary premolars and mandibular molars). All roots were prepared with a 2-mm ferrule and restored with metal crown. Fracture resistance (N) was assessed in a mechanical testing devic

This case report demonstrates sequential periodontic, orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment modalities to save and restore deep horizontally fractured maxillary central incisor. The location of fracture was deep in the mucosa which reveals less than 2 mm of tooth structure to receive the crown. The procedures like surgical crown lengthening, endodontic post placement, orthodontic forced eruption, core build-up and metal-ceramic crown restoration were sequentially performed to conserve the fractured tooth. Forced eruption is preferred to surgical removal of supporting alveolar bone, since for

Twelve patients with 13 mandibular fractures following third molar extraction were treated in our Department between 1980 and 1995. Clinical and radiographic data relating to these patients were analysed retrospectively to determine complication characteristics. Only one fracture occurred during surgery. The first week after the operation was found to be most critical for fracture occurrence. A "cracking" sound from the jaw while eating frequently indicated that a fracture had occurred, but repeated radiographic examination may be necessary for definitive diagnosis. Most teeth removed belonged
