Endoscopically assisted removal of ectopic teeth in the floor of the orbit. Case report and latest literature review.

Ectopic sinonasal third molar is a rare condition characterized by the aberrant position of the third molar in the maxillar sinus. The etiology of the teeth in the maxillary sinus is commonly associated to trauma and iatrogenic dental procedures. We present the clinical case of a 33-year-old man who presents an ectopic tooth in the right maxillary sinus, located in the orbital floor, who requires endoscopic control through a maxillary approach when performing the extraction. The endoscopic technique is being increasingly used in the maxillofacial field. Thanks to the endoscopic control for com

Management of an Unsuccessful Regenerative Endodontic Procedure after Tooth Fracture: A Case Report.

Dental trauma is a very frequent occurrence in children and adolescents, which creates a great impact on the esthetics, functions, and phonetics. Traumatic dental injuries can range from simple enamel fractures to permanent tooth loss. This case report presents an eight-year-old patient with an uncomplicated crown fracture of tooth 21, and 30 days after trauma, it was diagnosed as necrotic pulp. The first treatment choice was a regenerative endodontic procedure (REP), however, the failure led to apexification with Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA). The chosen rehabilitation was a composite vene

Self-repaired Process of a Traumatized Maxillary Central Incisor with Pulp Infarct after Horizontal Root Fracture Monitored by Laser Doppler Flowmetry Combined with Tissue Oxygen Monitor.

Achieving a precise diagnosis of the pulp status of traumatized teeth is difficult. The time to interfere through endodontic treatment for these teeth is greatly dependent on the doctor's experience. A 24-year-old male patient suffered a traumatic injury to tooth #9 that resulted in an apical root horizontal fracture 3 days before he came to the hospital. The injured tooth showed no response to pulp sensitivity testing at the first visit and was discolored 1 week later. Tooth #9 was immobilized to its adjacent teeth for 4 weeks by a composite splint. The patient was asked to make regular follo

Preserving alveolar bone growth following cervical root fracture: a case report.

Root fracture injuries affect 0.5%-7% of permanent teeth. Although cervical root fractures are less frequent in children, their serious consequences and poor prognosis may lead to tooth loss. In this case presentation, we discuss a treatment approach chosen to preserve alveolar bone growth following a cervical root fracture in an 8-Year-old boy.

Invasive Cervical Resorption: A Case Series with 3-Year Follow-Up.

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) lesion is an aggressive form of tooth destruction that usually begins immediately below the epithelial attachment. It has been described as a purely inflammatory reaction that can be started by microorganism infection, or an aseptic resorptive process that can be secondarily infected. The potential etiologic and predisposing factors for ICR are orthodontic treatment, traumatic injuries, bleaching, periodontal therapy, and idiopathic factors. This case series with a 3-year follow-up shows that Class 2 ICR lesions have a good prognosis in 100% of cases. Class 3

A Missing Tooth Found in the Nasal Cavity After an Attempt at Insertion of a Nasogastric Tube: A Case Report.

Dental injury is one of the most common complications of tracheal intubation. Although teeth dislodged during tracheal intubation are usually found in the oral cavity, we encountered a case of a missing tooth found in the nasal cavity in an intubated patient. A 62-year-old man with 4 loose teeth in the upper jaw was scheduled for laparoscopic hernia repair. After our second attempt at insertion of a nasogastric tube via the left naris, we discovered that a tooth had been dislodged. A lateral-view radiograph revealed the dislodged tooth in the nasal cavity. The ectopic tooth was removed by an o

Successful autotransplantation of a mature mesiodens to replace a traumatized maxillary central incisor.

AIM: This case describes the successful transplantation of a mature mesiodens tooth to replace a traumatized maxillary central incisor. SUMMARY: A 17-year-old male attended 1 week after a traumatic injury to his left maxillary central incisor (tooth 21). Radiographs revealed a horizontal root fracture and a poor prognosis. The tooth was atraumatically removed and replaced with a mesiodens lying in the same region. After stabilization, root canal treatment was performed and aesthetics were restored with a tooth coloured restoration. A 2-year follow-up revealed the tooth had good aesthetics and

What is the Best Root Surface Treatment for Avulsed Teeth?

Dental avulsion is the most severe type of traumatic tooth injuries since it causes damage to several structures and results in avulsion of the tooth from its socket. Management protocols for avulsed teeth should include management of the pulp and periodontal ligament (PDL) cells in order to improve the long-term prognosis and survival of these teeth. The prognosis of the treatment as well as the survival of an avulsed tooth depends on intrinsic and extrinsic factors, such as the duration of the tooth's extra-alveolar period, replantation time, the type of storage medium, PDL status and durati

Complications and survival rates of teeth after dental trauma over a 5-year period.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the current guidelines of the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) for emergency care of traumatised teeth result in lower complication rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Therapeutic strategies of 361 dental injuries in 291 patients treated at a university dental hospital over a 5-year period were investigated by evaluating the patients' records. Adherence to the guidelines of the IADT (Flores et al. Dent Traumatol 17:1-4, 2001; 49-52, 2001; 97-102, 2001; 145-148, 2001; and 193-196, 2001; Flores et al. Dent Traumatol

Prognosis of replanted primary incisors after injuries.

Between 1979 and 1997, 58 avulsed primary teeth were treated at the Pedodontic Clinic of Niigata University Dental Hospital. Among these, we replanted six avulsed incisors of four patients and treated two teeth of two patients replanted at other dental clinics. Referring to the clinical records, oral photographs and radiographs, we examined the injury age, cause of injury, condition of tooth storage, length of time until replantation, and also the prognosis after replantation. Three teeth of two cases remained until eruption of their permanent successors, and one tooth of one case remained und

Ribbond for treatment of complicated crown fractures: report of 3 cases.

Dental trauma is relatively common and can occur secondary to sporting injuries, falls, fights, or accidents. According to the International Association of Dental Traumatology, 50% of children experience dental trauma between the ages of 8 to 12. There are many options for endodontic and restorative treatments of traumatized teeth. Ribbond, which was introduced in the market in 1992, consists of bondable, reinforced ultra-high strength polyethylene fibers. Ribbond may be an option for the treatment of traumatized teeth because of its aesthetic properties; absence of additional tooth preparatio

Multidisciplinary approach to the rehabilitation of a crown fracture with glass-fibre-reinforced composite: a case report.

Traumatic tooth injuries are common in children. When permanent teeth are involved, it can be a challenge to save these teeth. This clinical case study describes the multidisciplinary treatment of a complex crown fracture and luxation of a right maxillary incisor along with esthetic management. After periodontal surgery including guided bone regeneration and endodontic treatment, we used a glass-fibre-reinforced composite post to increase retention and distribute stress along the root. The restoration was completed using composite in an incremental technique. During follow-up appointments, cli

Ridge Preservation Strategies in Children Following Anterior Tooth Trauma.

The sequelae associated with anterior oral trauma during childhood growth may require a protracted period of clinical management to achieve an optimal foundation for future prosthetic therapy. This article presents two case examples of long-term ridge development and preservation in children after anterior dental and alveolar trauma. These two patients were managed for periods of 11 years, one from age 8 to 19 and the other from age 9 to 20, until they were old enough to receive implantsupported restorations. Two different treatment plans were prescribed based on whether or not the teeth in qu

Embedded Tooth: Unique Mimicker of Keratoacanthoma.

A 58-year-old woman presented with a 30-day history of a moderately painful enlarging nodule on her upper cutaneous lip. Two weeks prior to presentation, she fell on the sidewalk leading to injuries of the oral mucosa, right temple, and knees. Physical examination revealed a 1.3-cm erythematous crusty nodule on the upper cutaneous lip and vermillion border resembling a keratoacanthoma-type squamous cell carcinoma. With gentle compression, a tooth was expressed from the wound. Dental traumas are usually associated with damage to the surrounding tissues, varying from bruises to deep lacerations.
