Genetic polymorphisms in external apical root resorption and orthodontic tooth movements: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: External apical root resorption (EARR) is characterized by permanent loss of dental structure at the root apex. This study aimed to systematically review gene polymorphisms associated with EARR in orthodontic patients. METHODS: Electronic database searches were performed across several databases. RESULTS: This systematic review included 21 studies. Outcome measures were based on tooth dimensions observed on radiographs obtained before and after treatment. Polymorphisms in the following genes were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism an

Micro-Osteoperforations Accelerate Tooth Movement without Exacerbating the Progression of Root Resorption in Rats.

A recent study reported that micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) accelerated tooth movement by activating alveolar bone remodeling. However, very little is known about the relationship between MOPs and external apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment. In this study, in order to investigate the mechanism through which MOPs accelerate tooth movement without exacerbating the progression of root resorption, we measured the volume of the resorbed root, and performed the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) method on exposed MOPs during ex

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis: Investigating individual incisor disease patterns using radiological classification.

BACKGROUND: Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a destructive, painful and underdiagnosed dental disorder. Radiography is necessary to fully assess the disease as early stages occur on clinically normal teeth. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the distribution pattern of appearance of EOTRH within the incisor arcade. In particular, we aimed to determine the influence of tooth position and horse age on the severity of EOTRH as well as on the frequency of the individual severity stages. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cross-sectional radiographic case study. METHODS: Dig

Apical root resorption of upper incisors caused by intrusive tooth movement: a radiographic study.

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether root resorption of the upper incisors occurs during intrusion of maxillary incisors. It examines the possibility of a relationship between the amount of root shortening and duration of the intrusive force. The ratio of root length before and after intrusion was compared in 20 patients. In 66 incisors with an intrusion period of 29 weeks, an intrusion of 3.6 mm was performed. The control group consisted of 15 patients who underwent no orthodontic treatment. Consequently, 58 incisors had no intrusion. The follow-up time between 2 measurements w

Management of an intruded tooth and adjacent tooth showing external resorption as a late complication of dental injury: three-year follow-up.

Treatment and prognosis of intrusive luxation can vary depending on the age of the patient, type of dentition, stage of root development, and time and severity of the trauma. Some studies have demonstrated that intrusions of up to 3.0 mm have an excellent prognosis, whereas teeth with severe intrusion or teeth that are intruded more than 6.0 mm present an unfavorable prognosis because of the occurrence of inflammatory resorption and pulp necrosis. The aim of this case report is to present an 11-year-old male patient with complete intrusion of the permanent maxillary left lateral incisor, assoc

Comparison between Two Radiological Methods for Assessment of Tooth Root Resorption: An In Vitro Study.

PURPOSE: This study aims to verify the validity of the radiographic image and the most effective radiological techniques for the diagnosis of root resorption to prevent, cure, and reduce it and to verify if radiological images can be helpful in medical and legal situations. METHODS: 19 dental elements without root resorption extracted from several patients were examined: endooral and panoramic radiographs were performed, with traditional and digital methods. Then the root of each tooth was dipped into 3-4 mm of 10% nitric acid for 24 hours to simulate the resorption of the root and later subm

Efficacy of Lesion Sterilization and Tissue Repair in Primary Tooth with Internal Resorption: A Case Series.

Lesion sterilization and tissue repair (LSTR) treatment involves the use of a triple antibiotic mixture in a suitable vehicle, which is used to disinfect root canal systems. This report highlights three cases where LSTR therapy using triple antibiotic paste was attempted in primary molars exhibiting gross periradicular pathosis and internal resorption. Follow-up examinations revealed reduction of periradicular pathosis and reversal of internal resorption in all the three cases. This case series opens a perspective on the use of LSTR therapy as an alternative option to extraction in treating pr

Radiographic evaluation in clinical practice of the types and stage of incisor tooth resorption and hypercementosis in horses.

BACKGROUND: There are several reports of incisor tooth resorption and hypercementosis in horses but, to date, studies have been limited in case numbers and to advanced lesions. Tooth resorption in other species is a radiographic diagnosis of types of resorption that are often identified before clinical signs. Our goal was to evaluate radiographically incisor tooth resorption in a large population of horses, utilising interpretation criteria from canine and human dentistry. OBJECTIVE: To document and classify incisor tooth resorption and hypercementosis. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective descriptiv

Effect of LED-mediated-photobiomodulation therapy on orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in rats.

The aim of this experimental study was to evaluate the effects of light-emitting diode-mediated-photobiomodulation therapy (LPT), on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement (TM) and orthodontically induced root resorption, in rats. Twenty male 12-week-old Wistar rats were separated into two groups (control and LPT) and 50 cN of force was applied between maxillary left molar and incisor with a coil spring. In the treatment group, LPT was applied with an energy density of 20 mW/cm(2) over a period of 10 consecutive days directly over the movement of the first molar teeth area. The distance betwee

Alveolar ridge resorption after tooth extraction: A consequence of a fundamental principle of bone physiology.

It is well established that tooth extraction is followed by a reduction of the buccolingual as well as the apicocoronal dimension of the alveolar ridge. Different measures have been taken to avoid this bone modelling process, such as immediate implant placement and bone grafting, but in most cases with disappointing results. One fundamental principle of bone physiology is the adaptation of bone mass and bone structure to the levels and frequencies of strain. In the present article, it is shown that the reduction of the alveolar ridge dimensions after tooth extraction is a natural consequence o

Apoptosis of the reduced enamel epithelium and its implications for bone resorption during tooth eruption.

Bone remodeling, the selective deposition and resorption of bone, is an important cause of tooth eruption. During tooth eruption, reduced enamel epithelia of the enamel organ interact with follicle cells to recruit osteoclasts for bone remodeling. However, little is known about the relationship between cellular activity of reduced enamel epithelium and bone resorption during tooth eruption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of apoptosis in reduced enamel epithelium on osteoclastogenesis and its implications for bone resorption. We have analyzed erupting mandibular molars

The effect of prostaglandin E2 and calcium gluconate on orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption in rats.

Possible modifications in orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and root resorption as a result of local injections of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) alone and with calcium gluconate (Ca) formed the aim of the present study. Twenty-four 8-week-old male Wistar rats were selected and randomly divided into three groups of eight. Both quadrants of the upper jaws of the first group of animals were used; therefore this group comprised two groups: control and normal. The upper left first molars of these eight animals were not placed under orthodontic force and received no injection, to serve as the normal group,

External Cervical Resorption Secondary to Orthodontic Treatment in a Previously Traumatized Tooth: A Case Report.

A history of dental trauma and orthodontic treatment can directly or indirectly cause external root resorption (ERR), which may significantly compromise the structural integrity, pulp vitality, and periapical health of affected teeth. External cervical resorption (ECR) is an invasive form of ERR that originates at the cementoenamel junction and progresses three-dimensionally along the root surface. In this case, a 20-year-old woman presented with discoloration of the maxillary right central incisor following orthodontic treatment, with a history of prior dental trauma. The maxillary right cent
