Orbital Apex Syndrome Causing Blindness Secondary to a Vertical Root Fracture of a Tooth.

The authors report a case of a 35-year-old man who presented with left maxillary toothache associated with left sided facial pain and a rapidly progressive loss of vision in the left eye. Clinical and radiological assessments revealed it to be an odontogenic orbital apex syndrome secondary to a vertical root fracture of a tooth. The infection was treated and controlled, postoperative follow-up showed no recurrent inflammation and the patient recovered well. However, the vision was lost permanently. Odontogenic orbital apex syndrome is a rare, aggressive disease. Once the infection spreads, it

Application of a new system for classifying tooth, root and canal morphology in the primary dentition.

Knowledge of root and canal morphology is essential for the effective practice of root canal treatment. Paediatric endodontics aims to preserve fully functional primary teeth in the dental arch; however, pulpectomy procedures in bizarre and tortuous canals encased in roots programmed for physiologic resorption are unique challenges. A new coding system for classifying the roots and main canals (https://doi.org/10.1111/iej.12685), accessory canals (https://doi.org/10.1111/iej.12800) and developmental anomalies (https://doi.org/10.1111/iej.12867) has been introduced recently. Impact of systemic diseases and tooth-based factors on outcome of root canal treatment.

AIM: To investigate the impact of systemic health and tooth-based factors on the outcome of root canal treatment (RCT). METHODOLOGY: The target population consisted of all patients receiving RCT at the Helsinki University Clinic in 2008-2011. The inclusion criteria were diagnosable pre- and postoperative (minimum 6 months after root filling) radiographs and adequate patient records of RCT available. Teeth extracted for nonendodontic reasons were excluded. Patient documents including digital radiographs of 640 permanent teeth in 504 patients were scrutinized. The radiographs were assessed by t

Orthodontically induced cervical root resorption in humans is associated with the amount of tooth movement.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the variation in the amount of the orthodontically induced cervical root resorption and the association with several factors, such as the amount of tooth displacement, location of tooth in the maxilla or mandible, and presence of an interference that may influence the amount of root resorption. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study included 30 subjects (20 females, 10 males) with an age range of 11.3 to 43.0 years. Using a standardized experimental orthodontic tooth movement, 59 premolars were moved buccaly during 8 weeks with application of 1

Why not to treat the tooth canal to solve external root resorptions? Here are the principles!

This paper aims at exposing the foundations or reasons why, in cases of external tooth resorption, including those of orthodontic origin, one should not perform a root canal to treat it. That should be done only to teeth with contamination or pulp necrosis, to remove the periapical inflammation induced by microbial products. When facing cases of external tooth resorption, one's conduct must always respect the following sequence of steps: first of all, identifying the cause accurately; then, planning the therapeutic approach and, finally, adopting the conducts in a very well-founded way. The si

The Effect of Ovariectomy and Orchiectomy on Orthodontic Tooth Movement and Root Resorption in Wistar Rats.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM: Root resorption (RR) after orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is known as a multifactorial complication of orthodontic treatments. Hormonal deficiencies and their effect on bone turnover are reported to have influences on the rate of tooth movement and root resorption. PURPOSE: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of female and male steroid sex hormones on tooth movement and root resorption. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Orthodontic appliances were placed on the right maxillary first molars of 10 ovariectomized female and 10 orchiectomized male Wistar rats as experi

Tooth movement and root resorption; the effect of ovariectomy on orthodontic force application in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the amount of tooth movement and orthodontically induced root resorption (OIRR) in ovariectomized rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five 10-week-old female Wistar rats undergoing ovariectomy (OVX) were investigated as the experimental group, and the other five without ovariectomy served as the control group. Four weeks after ovariectomy, 25-g nickel-titanium closed-coil springs were applied mesially to the maxillary left first molars. Micro-computed tomography was taken at day 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28. At day 28, the molars were extracted. The surface area of root resorpti

Effects of steroidal and nonsteroidal drugs on tooth movement and root resorption in the rat molar.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the administration of aspirin, acetaminophen, meloxicam, celecoxib, and prednisolone have no effect on root resorption and tooth movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mesial force of 50 g was applied to the left maxillary first molars of sixty 10-week-old male Wistar rats using nickel titanium closed coil springs attached to the cervical area of the incisors. The rats were randomly divided into 12 groups of 5 each. High and low doses of aspirin, acetaminophen, meloxicam, celecoxib, and prednisolone were administered via drinking water for 2 weeks. Tooth Movement Modulation and Root Protection via Piezo1-Mediated Production of Superoxide Dismutase 3.

AIMS: This study investigated the role of superoxide dismutase 3 (SOD3) in alveolar bone remodeling and cementum repair under orthodontic loading. METHODS: Mice were subjected to models of tooth movement with or without adenovirus-SOD3 treatment, and were examined for osteolytic activity, distance of tooth movement, and volume of root resorption. The periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) were cultured under mechanical loading or unloaded controls, in the presence or absence of piezo-type mechanosensitive ion channel component1 (Piezo1) inhibitor GsMTx4 or Yes-associated protein (YAP) inhibitor V

A Case of Advanced Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease Showing Extreme Lumbosacral Nerve Root Hypertrophy.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most common hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy. While diagnosis is typically established through clinical findings, nerve conduction studies (NCS), and genetic testing, imaging manifestations such as nerve root hypertrophy are increasingly recognized. This case report presents a 43-year-old man with lifelong progressive distal weakness who presented with severe lower extremity atrophy, pes cavus deformities, and wheelchair dependence. Neurologic examination revealed marked distal weakness and hyporeflexia, while nerve conduction studies demonstrate

A New Approach for Analyzing Root Development in Autogenous Tooth Transplants Using Computed Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate root development in autotransplanted teeth using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHODS: Twelve premolars with incomplete root formation, which were selected to replace prematurely lost upper central incisors, were analyzed by CBCT on two different occasions. The first CBCT examination (T1) was conducted before tooth autotransplantation. The second CBCT examination (T2) was performed over a follow-up period of at least 12 months and < 5 years. Three previously calibrated evaluators assessed root development. The positions of th

Micro-Osteoperforations Accelerate Tooth Movement without Exacerbating the Progression of Root Resorption in Rats.

A recent study reported that micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) accelerated tooth movement by activating alveolar bone remodeling. However, very little is known about the relationship between MOPs and external apical root resorption during orthodontic treatment. In this study, in order to investigate the mechanism through which MOPs accelerate tooth movement without exacerbating the progression of root resorption, we measured the volume of the resorbed root, and performed the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) method on exposed MOPs during ex

Crown-root reattachment of a severe subgingival tooth fracture: a 15-month periodontal evaluation.

Traumatic tooth fractures represent an intriguing challenge for clinicians, particularly when they involve the anterior region of the maxilla. In such situations, esthetic, psychosocial, functional, and therapeutic problems may have a negative effect on the patient's quality of life. In addition, fractures that involve the biologic width of the periodontium are even more difficult to treat. An interdisciplinary approach based on crown lengthening with or without orthodontic extrusion and the definitive prosthetic rehabilitation represent the standard modality of treatment for these conditions

Apical root resorption of upper incisors caused by intrusive tooth movement: a radiographic study.

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether root resorption of the upper incisors occurs during intrusion of maxillary incisors. It examines the possibility of a relationship between the amount of root shortening and duration of the intrusive force. The ratio of root length before and after intrusion was compared in 20 patients. In 66 incisors with an intrusion period of 29 weeks, an intrusion of 3.6 mm was performed. The control group consisted of 15 patients who underwent no orthodontic treatment. Consequently, 58 incisors had no intrusion. The follow-up time between 2 measurements w
