Association between Erosive Tooth Wear and Sociodemographic Background Factors, Restorative Dental Treatment Need, and Periodontal Health among Young Finnish Men: A Cross-Sectional Epidemiological Study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to determine the level of erosive tooth wear (ETW) in young, healthy Finnish men in relation to their sociodemographic background; the number of decayed, missing due to caries, and filled teeth in their permanent dentition (DMFT); and Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Studies on the association between ETW and periodontal health, as well as those related to sociodemographic factors, have so far been inconclusive, indicating a need for further research on these associations. METHODS: The data used in this study were collected from the database of the "O

Analysis and comparison of tooth wear in late antiquity and early middle age in populations that lived in continental and coastal Croatia using digitized VistaMetrix method.

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is a non-pathological loss of hard tissues on the incisal and occlusal tooth surface. In archaeology, the loss of dental tissue through attrition is associated with living opportunities and habits, availability, characteristics and methods of food preparation. In forensics, tooth wear is used to estimate the dental age on cadavers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this study, we used an archaeological sample from two sample collections. In this study, tooth wear was compared in archaeological samples of well-preserved maxilla and mandible specimens (n=392) from Croatian coasta

Older age, smoking, tooth loss and denture-wearing but neither xerostomia nor salivary gland hypofunction are associated with low intakes of fruit and vegetables in older Danish adults.

Xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction are prevalent conditions in older people and may adversely influence the intake of certain foods, notably fruit and vegetables. Here, we aimed to investigate whether xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction were associated with a lower intake of fruit and vegetables. The study included 621 community-dwelling adults, mean age 75⋅2 ± 6⋅4 years, 58⋅9 % female, who had participated in the Copenhagen City Heart Study follow-up, and undergone interviews regarding food intake (preceding month), oral and general health (xerostomia, taste alterations, diseas

Tooth surface loss: causes, management, and prevention.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth wear, also referred to as tooth surface loss, occurs due to causes other than caries. This involves the loss of hard tissues, namely enamel, dentin, and/or cementum. Types of tooth wear/tooth surface loss are abrasion, abfraction, attrition, and erosion. These multifactorial conditions can be caused by factors such as lifestyle, diet, or even habits, and may not be symptomatic. The focus of this article is to provide clinicians with detailed examples and explanations of the causes of tooth loss to aid in early diagnosis. Through early identification, the preventive measures o

Cervical wear and occlusal wear from a periodontal perspective.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cervical wear was associated with occlusal wear and clinical periodontal parameters in relatively older adults. A total of 30 patients, with multiple non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and without a disease or condition that could cause heavy tooth wear, were included in the study. The periodontal parameters including plaque index, probing pocket depth, gingival recession (GR) and tooth mobility were obtained from 641 teeth of which 475 (74·1%) displayed NCCLs. The levels of cervical wear and occlusal wear were determined according to a tooth

Up is down: testing the equivalence in dental wear patterns of the upper and lower carnassial.

The analysis of dental microwear is widely applied to reconstruct the diet of different fossil species. Dental microwear is usually sampled on worn facets, that are produced during food processing. To maximize the sample size, tooth wear is sampled on upper and lower teeth assuming equality in wear patterns between two homologous opposite facets. Anyhow, previous research on fossil herbivores have highlighted potential discrepancies between upper and lower teeth, particularly in non-homologous facets, raising questions about the validity of this practice. Here we test if wear of the homologous

An experimental approach on dynamic occlusal fingerprint analysis to simulate use-wear localisation and development on stone tools.

Information about the use of stone tools in the past is encoded in the wear patterns left on their surface; however, post-depositional processes can modify and obstruct these traces. One aim in the field of lithic functional analysis is to develop methods to detect and quantify these traces on stone tools. The occlusal fingerprint analysis (OFA) is a well-established method in dental wear studies to virtually simulate dental occlusal (contact between teeth) stroke movements and thus locate and quantify the sequential contact between opposing tooth crowns. Reaching across disciplines, we conduc

Relationship between tooth macrowear and jaw morphofunctional traits in representative hypercarnivores.

The mammalian adult dentition is a non-renewable resource. Tooth attrition and disease must be accommodated by individuals using behavioral, physiological, and/or musculoskeletal shifts to minimize impact on masticatory performance. From a biomechanical perspective, the musculoskeletal system becomes less efficient at producing bite force for a given amount of muscle input force over an individual's life, because tooth-food contact area increases as cusps wear. In this study we ask the question: does mandibular biomechanical performance show evidence of compensation with increasing tooth wear?

Dental adaptations of Bronze Age Harappans: Occlusal wear, crown size, and dental pathology.

Systematic study of dental attributes yields insights regarding diet and subsistence that cannot be gained from the archaeological record alone. This analysis documents occlusal tooth wear, tooth crown dimensions and dental pathology of an expanded dental sample from Harappa (2550-2030cal BC; Pakistan). New floral and faunal evidence of subsistence indicates a mix of agriculture and pastoralism that can be integrated with evidence of dental attributes and disease to reveal the impact of Harappan diet on oral health. An enlarged dental sample (58 specimens, 910 teeth) from mature phase Harappa

[Analysis of etiological factors involved in noncarious cervical lesions].

PURPOSE: The etiopathology of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) is multifactorial and still not fully understood. Tooth wear is defined as loss of dental hard tissue by a chemical or mechanical process that does not involve bacteria. This form of tooth surface loss includes attrition, abrasion, erosion, and abfraction. Noncarious cervical lesions represent loss of tooth structure at the cementoenamel junction. The purpose of this clinical study of NCCL was to analyze the etiology in relation to age and to identify the most important risk factors associated with cervical lesions, as well as pa

Monitoring erosive toothwear: BEWE, a simple tool to protect patients and the profession.

Erosive tooth wear is the third most commonly observed oral condition after caries and periodontal disease, with a prevalence similar to that of dentine hypersensitivity. However, it is not a condition that is routinely screened, or monitored, as part of the standard dental examination. Following a meeting held in 2018, this paper considers the outlook for erosive tooth wear and the need for dental professionals to monitor for signs of the condition as part of an oral health assessment, to provide protection for patients and the profession. The use of the basic erosive wear examination (BEWE)

Dental disorders in sows from Swedish commercial herds.

Knowledge on dental disorders in commercial sows is limited although such conditions may have important animal welfare implications. In a pilot study, the dental and periodontal health of 58 sows (Landrace*Yorkshire-crosses) from 8 Swedish commercial pig herds, slaughtered at one abattoir, were investigated. The oral cavity was inspected and abnormalities were recorded on a dental chart modified for pigs. Dental abnormalities, absence of teeth, supernumerary teeth, tooth fractures, signs of caries, and malalignment were recorded. The study revealed that 19% of the sows had supernumerary teeth

The pathogenesis of excessive wear in the permanent teeth of sheep.

The two central pairs of permanent incisor teeth (l1P, I2P) were compared post mortem in sheep from two flocks, one of which showed excessive wear. Sheep were usually killed in groups of six. Excessive wear occurred during the winter and spring after the eruption of l1P. When l1P erupted at an early age it was also subject to that season;s wear but when it erupted at a later age, it was subject to less wear according to the amount of time it was in apposition with the dental pad during the high wear season. A small amount of compensatory growth at the root of the tooth occurred in some sheep w

Validation of the Basic Erosive Wear Examination.

The Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) is a practical index for screening tooth wear, using a 4-point ordinal scale (0-3). The highest score is recorded in each sextant and a total score (or BEWE sextant cumulative) is calculated per subject. This study aims to investigate if the BEWE sextant cumulative score compares to one comprising a percentage score from all tooth surfaces and as a highest BEWE per subject. The aim is to assess the validity of this score. A total of 350 subjects were recruited from hospital and general practice in south-east England. Buccal, occlusal and lingual/palata

Oral and perioral changes in professional morsing players: a descriptive exploratory pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The morsing, a traditional South Indian jaw harp, is played by holding two metal forks against the anterior teeth. Prolonged playing of mouth-contact musical instruments may be accompanied by structural and functional changes in the oral and perioral regions. The effects of morsing playing on oral health have not been well studied, despite its cultural significance. AIM: The purpose of this study was to assess oral and paraoral alterations, such as tooth wear and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms, among professional morsing players. METHODS: This exploratory study was conduc
