Polyethylene Liner Fracture in Touch Trapeziometacarpal Prosthesis: A Case Report.

Total joint arthroplasty is a common surgical treatment option for trapeziometacarpal joint arthritis. The case report reflects the seldom complication of a fracture of the polyethylene liner in a double mobility trapeziometacarpal joint prosthesis (Touch). Unique about this case is that the affected patient had no symptoms despite a slight clicking during thumb abduction. X-rays and the clinical evaluation showed no abnormalities. A computed tomography scan and dynamic x-rays gave a hint about abnormal decentralization of the head. In a revision surgery, the fractured polyethylene liner was f

Interlocked transcription factor feedback loops maintain and restore touch sensation.

The sense of touch relies on the continuous function of specialized mechanosensory circuits, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we report that the conserved transcription factors (TFs) CFI-1 (ARID3) and EGL-5 (HOXA7) jointly maintain in adult C. elegans the molecular identity of two key interneuron types, securing information processing within a mechanosensory circuit. Toggling between normal and low levels of CFI-1 or EGL-5 in adults generated digital-like (ON/OFF) effects both on touch-evoked escape response and interneuron identity. Strikingly, reintrodu

Rapid visual engagement in neural processing of detailed touch interactions.

Touch perception is an inherently multisensory process in which vision plays an essential role. However, our understanding of how vision encodes sensory and emotional-affective aspects of observed touch, and the timing of these processes, remains limited. To address this gap, we investigated the neural dynamics of visual touch perception using electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings from participants who viewed videos depicting detailed tactile hand interactions from the Validated Touch-Video Database. We examined how the brain encodes basic body cues, such as hand orientation and viewing per

Adherence and the Diabetic Foot: High Tech Meets High Touch?

Diabetic foot ulcers, which are a common complication of diabetes, can have a negative impact on a person's physical and mental health, including an increased risk of depression. Patients suffering from depression are less likely to keep up with diabetic foot care, thus increasing the risk of developing ulcers. However, with the use of artificial intelligence (AI), at-home patient care has become easier, which increases adherence. To better understand how new technologies, including machine learning algorithms and wearable sensors, might improve patient adherence and outcomes, we conducted a l

Losing your touch? Sustained inattentional numbness for dynamic tactile events.

It is now well-known that a lack of attention can leave people unaware of clearly-noticeable, long-lasting and dynamic stimuli, such as a visible person dressed as a gorilla or an audible person claiming to be a gorilla. However, the question of whether touch can ever be susceptible to such extreme inattentional effects remains open. Here, we present evidence across two experiments that the absence of attention can leave people "numb" to the presence of a tactile stimulus that lasts for 3.5 s and moves across six different skin locations, establishing the new phenomenon of "sustained inattenti

Hands-off? Lessons from high-touch professionals about going virtual.

The COVID-19 crisis has fundamentally changed how many businesses operate and connect with their customers. Previously unheard-of government restrictions and sheltering-in-place requirements forced most professional services to transition to remote delivery methods (e.g., email, telephone, video consults, Shopify storefronts). Providers of low-touch services (e.g., lawyers, accountants) naturally lent themselves to remote delivery; however, those that offer high-touch services, particularly those in healthcare (e.g., doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists), experienced a drastic change in

C-tactile afferent stimulating touch carries a positive affective value.

The rewarding sensation of touch in affiliative interactions is hypothesized to be underpinned by a specialized system of nerve fibers called C-Tactile afferents (CTs), which respond optimally to slowly moving, gentle touch, typical of a caress. However, empirical evidence to support the theory that CTs encode socially relevant, rewarding tactile information in humans is currently limited. While in healthy participants, touch applied at CT optimal velocities (1-10cm/sec) is reliably rated as subjectively pleasant, neuronopathy patients lacking large myelinated afferents, but with intact C-fibr

Sensory and Emotional Perception of Wooden Surfaces through Fingertip Touch.

Previous studies on tactile experiences have investigated a wide range of material surfaces across various skin sites of the human body in self-touch or other touch modes. Here, we investigate whether the sensory and emotional aspects of touch are related when evaluating wooden surfaces using fingertips in the absence of other sensory modalities. Twenty participants evaluated eight different pine and oak wood surfaces, using sensory and emotional touch descriptors, through the lateral motion of active fingertip exploration. The data showed that natural and smooth wood surfaces were perceived m

"Universal Precautions": perinatal touch and examination after childhood sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse is a common experience of Australian women with 1 woman in 3 reporting unwanted sexual activity, and 1 in 10 reporting attempted or penetrative sexual abuse before 16 years of age. The objective of this study was to explore women's responses to perinatal professional touch and examination of themselves and their babies. METHODS: Eighteen women were interviewed using an in-depth semistructured qualitative method. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. The interviews were coded and thematically analyzed, using NVivo to assist with data management. To ensure

Self-training of dynamic touch: striking improves judgment by wielding.

In traditional theories of perceptual learning, sensory modalities support one another. A good example comes from research on dynamic touch, the wielding of an unseen object to perceive its properties. Wielding provides the haptic system with mechanical information related to the length of the object. Visual feedback can improve the accuracy of subsequent length judgments; visual perception supports haptic perception. Such cross-modal support is not the only route to perceptual learning. We present a dynamic touch task in which we replaced visual feedback with the instruction to strike the uns

Utility and diagnostic accuracy of fallopian tube touch imprint cytology.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of cytology smears in distinguishing between tube and non-tube structures. METHODS: One hundred cytology smears of fallopian tube and non-tube structures (vessels, round and ovarian ligaments) were prepared from surgically removed uterus and fallopian tube specimens and stained by the Papanicolaou method. The slides were reviewed blindly by pathologists and interpreted as tube or non-tube structures. The results were compared to the histological examination of the same specimens. FINDINGS: Results indicated an overall accuracy of 97% with a spe

Management of cornea-lens touch after filtering surgery for glaucoma.

The success of filtering surgery for glaucoma may be compromised by a postoperative flat anterior chamber associated with cornea-lens touch, hypotony, and absence of wound leakage. The clinical course of eight patients with this complication was reviewed. Six patients had chronic angle-closure glaucoma. Only one patient responded to medical therapy which included frequent topical application of atropine sulfate 3.0% for 1 hour. Reformation of the anterior chamber with air and drainage of any suprachoroidal fluid was immediately performed in the remaining seven. At the time of follow-up (mean,

An assessment of the optimal lens fit rate in keratoconus subjects using three-point-touch and apical touch fitting approaches with the rose K2 lens.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the number of ordered lenses required to achieve an optimal lens fit between three-point-touch and apical touch fittings in keratoconus subjects with nipple and oval cones using the first definite apical clearance lens (FDACL) as a starting point. METHODS: First trial lens was selected following manufacturer's guidelines and the back optic zone radius (BOZR) was flattened or steepened in 0.10 mm steps until a FDACL was found. Subsequently, subjects were randomly allocated to three-point-touch (BOZR 0.10 mm flatter than FDACL) and apical touch fittings (BOZR 0.40 mm flat

Sensory neuron PIEZO1 deletion inhibits dynamic light touch sensitivity in uninjured mice, prevents neuropathic light touch hypersensitivity, and drives compensatory changes in dorsal root ganglia.

Mechanotransduction is vital for sensing various mechanical stimuli, including blunt force and dynamic light touch. The sensation of a punctate mechanical force is very different from that of a brush swept across the skin, yet both involve mechanical stimulation of the skin and embedded sensory afferent endings. However, the sensory neuron mechanisms contributing to punctate vs light touch somatosensation, and how they might become dysregulated in nerve injury to cause pain, remain unclear. Here, we use mice with sensory neuron-specific PIEZO1 deletion to demonstrate sensory neuron PIEZO1 is r

Research protocol design and implementation of a hybrid no-touch and low-touch prospective observational study during the COVID-19 public health emergency: the VISION study.

INTRODUCTION: The conduct of clinical research is essential during public health emergencies, including COVID-19, to characterise the natural history of the infection to inform case definitions, identify risk factors for severe disease, transmission patterns, short and long-term complications and safe and effective treatments and vaccines. Policies aimed at mitigating transmission of SARS-CoV-2 proved challenging to conduct clinical research. Here, we describe the Vital Status and Outcomes of COVID-19 (VISION) study, a hybrid no-touch and low-touch clinical research protocol following particip

Penetrating spinal cord injury transiently inhibits responsiveness to touch in mice.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating mechanical trauma of the spinal cord. We recently showed that penetration of fine needles from dorsal to ventral regions in the spinal cord disturbed spontaneous locomotion in mice. However, it has not been verified if penetrating SCI at the dorsal side of the spinal cord, responsible regions for sensory functions, changes movements after sensory stimulation. In this study, penetration into the dorsal midline or dorsolateral regions was separately applied to mice. Using these mice, we evaluated withdrawal movements after tactile and thermal stimulation

Speech-touch integration for affective human-robot interaction: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence is increasingly capable of expressing empathy through language, yet the integration of physical touch-an important cue for social connection-remains fragmented. Although robots utilise language or touch individually, few systems coordinate both modalities, potentially limiting their capacity for affective human-robot interaction (HRI). This scoping review maps social robots that combine spoken language and tactile interaction (e.g., hugging, stroking, warmth, vibration), examines how these modalities are coordinated in existing systems, and synthesises repor
