Haptic feedback is essential for precise motor control, making its integration into artificial limbs a critical design challenge. Current approaches to restoring lost tactile input in patients have focused on interfacing with somatosensory pathways at the brain, nerve, or skin level, achieving partial restoration. However, augmentative artificial limbs, devices that provide novel movement capabilities beyond the biological body, pose unique challenges. These limbs lack dedicated sensory pathways, raising fundamental questions about how to deliver tactile feedback for these devices without disr

The fingernails have been considered passive support structures that enhance tactile sensitivity by providing a rigid background, preventing the fingertips from slipping when interacting with objects. Recent studies have provided evidence that the people can perform basic tactile judgments of stimuli applied to the fingernails. In this study, we investigate whether fingernails also contribute to more complex, higher-order spatial processing. Specifically, we examine graphesthesia - the ability to recognise shapes or letters traced onto the skin - and assess whether this tactile capacity extend

Human skin and its underlying tissues constitute a viscoelastic medium, implying that any deformation depends not only on the currently applied force, but also on the recent loading history. The extent to which this physical memory influences the signaling of first-order tactile neurons during natural hand use is not well understood. Here, we examined the effect of past loading on the responses of fast-adapting (FA-1) and slowly-adapting (SA-1 and SA-2) first-order tactile neurons innervating the human fingertip to loadings applied in different directions representative of object manipulation

Sotos syndrome (Sotos) and Tatton-Brown-Rahman Syndrome (TBRS) are two of the most common overgrowth disorders associated with intellectual disability. Individuals with these syndromes tend to have similar cognitive profiles and high likelihood of autism symptomatology. However, whether and how sensory processing is affected is currently unknown. Parents/caregivers of 36 children with Sotos and 20 children with TBRS completed the Child Sensory Profile-2 (CSP-2) and the Sensory Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ) along with other standardized questionnaires assessing autistic traits (Social Responsive

The normal organization and plasticity of the cutaneous core of the thalamic principal somatosensory nucleus (ventral caudal, Vc) have been studied by single-neuron recordings and microstimulation in patients undergoing awake stereotactic operations for essential tremor (ET) without apparent somatic sensory abnormality and in patients with dystonia or chronic pain secondary to major nervous system injury. In patients with ET, most Vc neurons responded to one of the four stimuli, each of which optimally activates one mechanoreceptor type. Sensations evoked by microstimulation were similar to th

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess if patients can be divided into different strata, and to explore if these correspond to the risk of diabetic foot complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A set of 28 demographic, vascular, neurological and biomechanical measures from 2,284 (1,310 men, 974 women) patients were included in this study. A two-step cluster analysis technique was utilised to divide the patients into groups, each with similar characteristics.
RESULTS: Only two distinct groups: group 1 (n = 1,199; 669 men, 530 women) and group 2 (n = 1,072; 636 men, 436 women) were identi

How do humans recognize objects in their environment using either vision or touch, even when only one sense is available? Humans routinely integrate visual and haptic sensory systems for object recognition, yet the mechanisms behind cross-modal transfer of category information are not fully understood. In this study, we collected behavioral and fMRI data from 134 participants. Fifty participants (25 per group; 13 females each) performed a similarity rating task with novel 3D objects ("digital embryos") using either visual or haptic modalities. The remaining 84 participants completed a 3D objec

Seeing an embodied humanoid avatar move its arms can induce in the observer the illusion that its own (static) arms are moving accordingly, the kinematic signals emanating from this avatar thus being considered like those from the biological body. Here, we investigated the causal relationship between these kinaesthetic illusions and the illusion of body ownership, manipulated through visuomotor synchronisation. The results of two experiments revealed that the sense of body ownership over an avatar seen from a first-person perspective was intimately linked to visuomotor synchrony. This was not

In the natural world, self-motion always stimulates several different sensory modalities. Here we investigated the interplay between a visual optic flow stimulus simulating self-motion and a tactile stimulus (air flow resulting from self-motion) while human observers were engaged in a distance reproduction task. We found that adding congruent tactile information (i.e., speed of the air flow and speed of visual motion are directly proportional) to the visual information significantly improves the precision of the actively reproduced distances. This improvement, however, was smaller than predict

There is general agreement that horses have dichromatic colour vision with similar capabilities to human beings with red-green colour deficiencies. However, whether colour perception has an impact on equine jumping performance and how pronounced the colour stimulus might be for a horse is unknown. The present study investigated the relationship between the colour of the fences (blue or green) and the show jumping performance of 20 horses ridden by two riders using an indoor and outdoor set of green and blue fences. In the indoor arena, significantly more touches and faults were made on blue fe

Localizing touch relies on the activation of skin-based and externally defined spatial frames of reference. Psychophysical studies have demonstrated that early visual deprivation prevents the automatic remapping of touch into external space. We used fMRI to characterize how visual experience impacts the brain circuits dedicated to the spatial processing of touch. Sighted and congenitally blind humans performed a tactile temporal order judgment (TOJ) task, either with the hands uncrossed or crossed over the body midline. Behavioral data confirmed that crossing the hands has a detrimental effect

With the improvement of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technology, virtual objects with realistic shapes have opened up the possibility for the blind or visually impaired (BVI) to improve the cognitive ability of objects by perceiving a large number of objects. In order to help BVI learn and recognize objects more conveniently, we constructed a virtual object shape recognition system (VOSRS) based on 3D reconstruction. We first proposed an improved 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) method for precise 3D reconstruction of objects. Then, we introduced a mesh extraction method for 3D Gaussian t

Anosmia, the complete loss of olfactory perception, has been associated with sensory compensation in non-chemical senses such as vision and hearing, but its relationship with tactile perception remains unclear. This study investigates whether isolated congenital anosmia (ICA)-a rare condition in which individuals are born without a sense of smell but are otherwise healthy-is linked to heightened self-reported tactile sensitivity compared to healthy controls. Drawing on sensory compensation theory and anecdotal evidence from related studies, we hypothesized that individuals with ICA would repor

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were studied in 27 patients with central post-stroke pain and in 19 controls. A scoring system for SEP was used, in which increasing abnormalities rendered increasing scores. SEPs evoked by electrical stimulation of the median and tibial nerves were compared to perception thresholds for touch, vibration, innocuous and noxious temperature. All patients had reduced temperature sensibility, while the threshold for touch and vibration was abnormal in only 52% and 41%, respectively. Decreased touch and vibration sensibility had a high correlation with high SEP

A growing body of evidence suggests an involvement of the somatosensory cortices for social perception. For example, it has been shown that observing touch on other bodies (in the absence of any real touch on the own body) affects somatosensory brain areas. Thus, understanding others' sensory experiences seems to rely on vicarious activation of somatosensory cortices. Recent studies also demonstrated that observation of painful and nonpainful touch engages the observer's somatosensory cortex differentially. The somatosensory activation during observation of painful stimulation has been related

Can you tell what's inside a sealed container just by touching it? Prior work in "container haptics" has focused on numbers-how many marbles are rolling around, or how full a bottle is. Here, we explore whether humans can make qualitative judgments-what kind of thing is inside-without seeing it. Across three studies, participants explored containers filled with dry food items (e.g., flour or granola) using touch, with or without sound. Surprisingly, even with no visual (or auditory cues), participants could often identify, or at least describe, the contents based on texture, size, and density.

Social perception is a multimodal process involving vision and audition as central input sources for human social cognitive processes. However, it remains unclear how profoundly deaf people assess others in the context of mating and social interaction. The current study explored the relative importance of different sensory modalities (vision, smell, and touch) in assessments of opposite- and same-sex strangers. We focused on potential sensory compensation processes in mate selection (i.e., increased importance of the intact senses in forming impressions of an opposite-sex stranger as a potenti

The dimensions of objects and our body parts influence our perception of the weight of objects in our surroundings. It has been recently described a dramatic underestimation of the perceived weight of the hand. However, little is known on how perceived size informs the perceived weight of our own body parts. Here we investigated the effects of embodying an enlarged and a shrunken hand on perceived hand weight. We manipulated hand size using a visual-tactile illusion with magnifying and minifying mirrors. We then measured perceived hand weight using a psychophysical matching task in which parti

PURPOSE: The study goal was to determine how sensory function varies across the border of impaired sensitivity to pinprick in patients with mandibular nerve injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Borders of decreased sensitivity to pinprick were mapped in 15 patients who reported altered sensation. Four mechanoreceptive, 2 thermoreceptive, and 2 thermonociceptive functions were studied at 5 sites separated by 0.6 cm across the border. The tests were repeated to evaluate day-to-day consistency in the pattern of variation for each sensory measure.
RESULTS: The estimates of sensory function were not f
