Toxocariasis, usually caused by Toxocara canis, is a zoonosis acquired by ingestion of worms which inhabit the gut of young canines. Domestic pets, such as dogs, become infected from soil in public parks and playgrounds which are often heavily contaminated. Although toxocariasis is often regarded as having two principal, though uncommon, manifestations--visceral larva migrans (VLM) and ocular toxocariasis (OT)--recent studies have suggested otherwise. A third, more common, condition, termed 'covert toxocariasis', describes patients in whom positive toxocara serology is associated with a number

Demographic characteristics associated with human Toxocara canis infection in children aged one to 11 years were investigated using data from the Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 1971 to 1973. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with larval stage antigen was used to measure the concentration of antibodies to T. canis in 1,409 available sera. From 4.6 to 7.3% of the children in different geographic regions of the United States have been infected, with serologic prevalence approaching 30% among black children of lower socioeconomic status aged six to 11 years. For both blacks and whit

Twenty-five white mice were experimentally invaded by the larvae of Toxocara cati, and their blood count was followed. On the seventh day after invasion the number of eosinophil leucocytes started to increase and the maximum (28%) was reached on the twenty-first day. After 45 days the mice were newly invaded by eggs of Ascaris suum. The number of eosinophil leucocytes increased again and reached its maximum on the fourteenth day (26%). The increased eosinophilia in mice was observed until the 204th day after invasion, or until the 159th day after the new invasion. Between the number of eosinop

BACKGROUND: Human toxocariasis is among the most common helminthic zoonoses worldwide, and larvae traverse the lungs during visceral migration. Respiratory morbidity among diagnosed patients remains poorly characterised, in contrast to the much larger seroepidemiological literature linking Toxocara seropositivity to asthma.
OBJECTIVES: To map the reported occurrence and clinical spectrum of respiratory disease in confirmed or probable human toxocariasis, and to identify evidence gaps.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Case reports, case series, cross-sectional studies, cohorts and trials reporting a res

The aim of the present report is to describe a clinical case of toxocariasis. 37-year - old man was admitted to Pirogov Municipal Clinical Hospital No.1 in Moscow. He was presented with intense generalized abdominal pain. Three months before the described hospitalization, the patient had acute bronchitis, then pneumonia. During the examination there were found hyperthermia, ascites, shortness of breath, sweating, hypereosinophilia. Patient lost 8 kilos over the last 6 months. There were arisen many hypotheses, however, after a more detailed survey about patient's life it turned out that he tra

Toxocariasis, caused by Toxocara canis or Toxocara catis, is a worldwide occurring parasitic disease, reaching high prevalences especially in tropical and subtropical countries. The clinical presentation can range from asymptomatic seropositivity to life threatenting disease, depending on the organ system involved. Cardiac involvement, one of the possible manifestations of human Toxocara spp. infection, is rarely reported in case reports. As far as we know, no systematic reviews of clinical presentations have been published till now and no clear recommendations regarding the treatment of Toxoc

Most panuveitis in children are caused by infectious agents. A detailed clinical history and clinical examination are helpful in the diagnosis, but specific techniques are sometimes required to identify the causing specimen. We report the first published case of panuveitis in a child caused by simultaneous ocular infection by Toxocara canis and a fly larva and the innovative use of immunodiffusion technique in the vitreous for the diagnosis.

Toxocariasis caused by the nematode larvae of the Toxocara genus is a worldwide parasitic zoonosis. Diagnosis of human toxocariasis commonly relies on serological tests since the symptoms and signs of Toxocara infection are not pathognomonic. However Toxocara larval excretory-secretory (TES) antigen used in serological tests may exhibit low specificity due to the cross-reactions between related helminth infections such as ascariasis, anisakiasis, strongyloidosis and filariasis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the possible effect of Trichinella cross-reactions in the serological diagnosis o

Clinical involvement of the nervous system in visceral larva migrans due to Toxocara is rare, although in experimental animals the larvae frequently migrate to the brain. A review of the literature from the early 50's to date found 29 cases of brain involvement in toxocariasis. In 20 cases, various clinical and laboratory manifestations of eosinophilic meningitis, encephalitis, myelitis or radiculopathy were reported. We report two children with neurological manifestations, in which there was cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis with marked eosinophilia and a positive serology for Toxocara both in

INTRODUCTION: Toxocariasis is a worldwide human helminthiasis, which is mostly asymptomatic and caused by toxocara canis, a roundworm in dogs. These can cause visceral larva migrans syndrome in humans who ingest contaminated soil. CNS manifestation with a focal mass lesion is very rare, seizures often being the first symptom.
CASE REPORT: We describe an 11-year-old girl presenting with a generalized epileptic seizure and eosinophilia in blood. Under antibiotic therapy under the assumption of toxoplasmosis the lesion did not decrease and surgical resection was considered. We used computer-assi

Toxocariasis is a worldwide-occurring parasitic infection leading to tissue damage in various organs due to wandering Toxocara larvae (visceral larva migrans). More than 40 cases of CNS involvement in children and immunocompetent adults have been documented in detail to date. Here, we present evidence of eosinophilic meningomyelitis in an adult without known risk factors and with positive Toxocara antibody response in CSF, but not in blood. Toxocariasis has to remain among the differential diagnosis in patients with eosinophilic CNS infection even if serological tests in blood are negative. Ad

PURPOSE: To evaluate abdominal ultrasound (US) findings in children infected with Toxocara canis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen children, 18 months to 7 years of age, with serological diagnosis of T.canis infection underwent abdominal US. Eosinophil counts, hemoglobin levels and immunoglobulin E titers were measured for all patients.
RESULTS: Abdominal ultrasound revealed multiple hypoechoic areas in the livers of 15 patients (83.3%). Hepatohilar lymph-node enlargement was present in 14 patients (77.7%), 2 of whom also showed peripancreatic lymph-node enlargement. Hepatomegaly was present

We report the case of a 3-year-old girl with stage I Wilms' tumor of favorable histology. During the course of chemotherapy 5 months post-diagnosis, an abdominal ultrasonogram revealed hypoechoic areas consistent with hepatic tumor recurrence. A liver biopsy performed to rule out recurrence of the malignancy was suggestive of toxocariasis and the diagnosis was confirmed by serologic testing. Although the patient had few classic signs of visceral larva migrans, her eosinophilia and family social history should have suggested this possibility. This case demonstrates that hepatic toxocariasis sho
