[National experts consensus on tracheotomy and intubation for burn patients (2018 version)].

Airway edema, stenosis, obstruction and even asphyxia are easy to occur in patients with extensive burn, deep burn of head, face, and neck area, inhalation injuries, etc., which threaten life. Timely tracheotomy and intubation is an important treatment measure, but lack of knowledge and improper handling in some hospitals resulted in airway obstruction. The technique of percutaneous tracheotomy and intubation provides convenience for emergency treatment of critical burns and mass burn. The Chinese Geriatrics Society organized some experts in China to discuss the indications, timing, methods, e

[A case report of tracheotomy complicated by hemorrhage after radical operation of tongue].

A 55-year old middle-aged male presented swelling lymph nodes in neck and mass in left tongue for three mouths. Physical examination shows a size 5 cm×5 cm mass in tongue and went over the midline. The mandibular lymph nodes were touched with moderate tenderness and little mobility in bilateral. The laboratory results, function of the kidney and heart liver, nasopharyngeal fiber area were basically normal. The result of CT and MRI shows the mass reached the lingual muscle layer and several suspected metastatic lymph nodes in neck. Pathological examination shows much atypical squamous cell reac

Prevalence of Tracheotomy and Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy in Patients with Guillain-Barré Syndrome.

Some patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome require respiratory management by tracheotomy and/or nutritional management by tube feeding; however, few studies have reported the follow-up course in these patients. The objective of this study was to investigate the follow-up course of tracheotomy and gastrostomy in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome. The study subjects were 50 patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (25 males, 25 females; mean age, 51.1 ± 18.7 years) who were admitted to the Hiroshima City Rehabilitation Hospital during the period from April 2008 to December 2015. We retrospectiv

Factors associated with tracheotomy and decannulation in pediatric bilateral vocal fold immobility.

OBJECTIVE: Describe the natural history of all-cause bilateral vocal fold immobility (BVFI) in pediatric patients and analyze factors associated with tracheotomy and subsequent decannulation. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with complete or partial BVFI at a metropolitan private pediatric otolaryngology practice between 2001 and 2012. Records were reviewed for data on demographics, etiologies, vocal fold position, and BVFI resolution. Patients requiring tracheotomy were further investigated for tracheotomy duration and associated complications and procedures.

[Survival analysis for patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities following tracheotomy].

To investigate the survival rate and causes of death in patients with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMIDs) that necessitated tracheotomy, we retrospectively analyzed 90 patients who underwent tracheotomy between 1990 and 2009. Indications for tracheotomy in these patients were upper airway obstruction (44 patients), recurrent aspiration pneumonia (28 patients), retained secretions (23 patients), prolonged mechanical ventilation (18 patients), chronic respiratory failure (9 patients), central respiratory failure (5 patients), and gastroesophageal reflux (8 patients). Most of the p

Tracheotomy in the first year of life: outcomes in term infants, the Vanderbilt experience.

OBJECTIVE: In an era emphasizing critical care of preterm infants, we characterize the indications and outcomes of tracheotomies performed in the first year of life in term infants compared to preterm infants. METHODS: Retrospective study of 127 tracheotomies performed in the first year of life at a tertiary-care children's hospital between 1988-2004. RESULTS: Mean gestational ages of the term and preterm groups were 38.97 and 29.71 weeks, respectively (P < 0.001). Indications for tracheotomy were upper airway abnormalities in 53% for the term group. The number of subsequent airway procedure

Need for tracheotomy is rare in patients with acute supraglottitis: findings of a retrospective study.

We retrospectively reviewed the cases of 23 adults and six children who had been given a presumed diagnosis of acute supraglottitis between 1987 and 1997. The most common symptoms in these patients were odynophagia, dysphagia, hoarseness, and fever. Stridor and drooling were also observed, primarily in the children. Fiberoptic laryngoscopy confirmed the presence of edema and erythema of the supraglottic structures in all patients. Blood cultures were positive for Hemophilus influenzae type b in three children and for Serratia marcescens in one adult. All other blood cultures were negative. All

[Permanent mechanical ventilation at home via a tracheotomy in chronic respiratory insufficiency].

This study describes our experience from 1960 onwards of 222 patients suffering from terminal chronic respiratory failure; we report our results of domiciliary mechanical ventilation for 11-17 hours per day using tracheotomy. The method was easy to use at home at a reasonable cost and was far less than in a medical environment. The results were excellent both for length of survival and quality of life for all cases where respiratory failure was due to chest wall problems (neurological, muscular or restrictive syndromes due to chest deformity). The majority of cases were sequelae of polio, myop

Unveiled central hypoventilation after tracheotomy in anti-IgLON5 disease: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Anti-IgLON5 disease is a recently described entity that has been associated with neurological symptoms and sleep disturbances including sleep breathing disorders. Sleep stridor as well as obstructive and less often central sleep apnea have been reported but rarely needing ventilation on tracheotomy. We report the case of a patient in whom obstructive sleep apnea with secondary development of dysphagia and recurrent aspiration pneumonia led to the diagnosis of anti-IgLON 5 disease. Acute respiratory failure due to laryngospasm required intubation and eventually tracheotomy. Yet hypo

Treatment of secondary benign airway stenosis after tracheotomy with Montgomery T-tube.

Objective: With the improvement of surgical operation, increasing incidence of secondary benign airway stenosis, as a complication of long-term tracheal intubation and tracheotomy, leads to significant increases in morbidity and mortality. Previous treatment of secondary benign airway stenosis was mainly based on surgical resection and reconstruction. There is an urgent need for new treatment methods except surgery, especially for those inoperable patients. Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 20 patients who had treatments of secondary benign airway stenosis after tracheotomy with Mon

Pediatric tracheotomy: A 25-year experience at a portuguese tertiary children's hospital.

Tracheotomy is a procedure that aims to ensure airway patency in patients with respiratory failure, when there is a high risk of upper airway obstruction or a need for prolonged mechanical ventilation. It has, as expected, profound implications for patients' quality of life and family dynamics. The aim of this study is to present the case series of pediatric tracheotomies over the last 25 years in a tertiary pediatric hospital. A retrospective observational study was conducted on pediatric patients who underwent tracheotomy at the Otolaryngology Department of Coimbra's Local Health Unit, betwe

Bronchoscopic Internal Traction for Airway Foreign Body Removal via Tracheotomy Under ECMO.

We present a technique utilizing internal traction-assisted mobilization to effectively retrieve objects, such as pen caps, that lack an external grasping surface and resist conventional rigid bronchoscopy. In this case, tracheotomy served as an alternative extraction route for impacted foreign bodies that failed to pass across the glottis or subglottic region. Concurrently, ECMO maintains oxygenation during complex airway manipulation and reduces the risk of hypoxia.

Our Experience with Percutaneous and Surgical Tracheotomy in Intubated Critically Ill Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Open surgical tracheotomy (OST) and percutaneous dilatational tracheotomy (PDT) are commonly used for securing airway in intubated critically ill patients. The purpose of this study was to compare the safety of OST and PDT, particularly in intubated critically ill patients. METHODS: The medical records of intubated critically ill patients who underwent tracheotomy between August 2006 and July 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. Minor and major complication rates were compared according to the tracheotomy technique. Preoperative intubation time, postoperative decannulation time, rea
