Roller traction: mobilizing patients with acetabular fractures.

Patients with acetabular fractures unamenable to open reduction and internal fixation are subject to 6-12 weeks of traction and, traditionally, bed rest. Using roller traction allows the patient to be mobilized to a bedside chair and to stand without disrupting the traction. This is accomplished by slightly modifying a standard lower extremity skeletal traction setup. Roller pulleys and stopper clamps are substituted for the usual pulleys. These are attached to extra-long horizontal bars that expand the lateral space that the patient can now use around the bed. Roller traction helps prevent th

[Neurogenic bladder caused by spinal cord traction].

A neurogenic bladder was the presenting syndrome in three cases of spinal cord traction. Of the typical symptomatic triad: neuro-orthopedic, cutaneous and urologic, the latter was of primary importance. Symptoms in the first case were incomplete bladder retention with distention of upper urinary tract, right-sided vesicorenal reflux and renal insufficiency. Six months after excision of a sacral lipoma and freeing of the filum terminale, micturition had become normal without residue, and renal function normalized. Right-sided reflux was corrected by submucosal advancement surgery with good resu

Complications of halo-pelvic traction. Case report.

When halo-pelvic traction is applied at a rapid rate it may induce cranial nerve palsies. The sixth, ninth, and tenth cranial nerves appear to be the most vulnerable. A proposed etiology is the stretching of these nerves resulting in a compromised blood supply with a consequent temporary paralysis which usually improves within 8 to 10 weeks.

Radiographical characteristics and traction duration of impacted maxillary canine requiring surgical exposure and orthodontic traction: a cross-sectional study.

This cross-sectional study aimed to classify the radiographical characteristics of impacted maxillary canines that were surgically exposed following orthodontic traction and to find out which factor is most closely related to traction duration. This study enrolled 74 patients with 87 maxillary canines. Cone-beam computed tomography images, panoramic radiographs, and medical records were analyzed. Cystic-appearing lesion and resorption of adjacent roots were observed in 26.4% and 23.0% of cases, respectively. Impacted maxillary canines were mostly distributed in the lateral incisor area. Morphofunctional evaluation of peripapillary retinoschisis associated with myopic posterior staphyloma and hyaloid traction: does it cause peripapillary vitreoretinal traction?

This case report presents the details of a 33-year-old female patient who was referred to a specialized retina service because of mild vision loss in her right eye). The patient's visual acuity was 20/25 in right eye and 20/50 in the left eye (; amblyopic); the spherical equivalent was -12.75 diopters (right eye) and -14.75 diopters (left eye). Multimodal retinal imaging showed peripapillary schisis in both the inner and outer retinal layers, grade II posterior vitreous detachment, and a tessellated fundus. Using Humphrey perimetry and MP-3 microperimetry, the functional evaluation indicated m

Pre-operative Traction in Severe Rigid Kyphoscoliosis - CT-based Navigation Pelvic Pin Insertion in Halo-Pelvic Traction: A Case Report.

Neglected severe rigid kyphoscoliosis can lead to rapid curve progression, presenting a challenge for surgical correction and carrying higher risks of mortality, morbidity, and neurological injury, potentially resulting in permanent paralysis. Halo-pelvic traction (HPT) has been reported to be effective in improving curve flexibility, assisting the surgical correction process, and reducing the likelihood of neurological complications. We report the case of a 15-year-old girl with mosaic Turner syndrome and severe kyphoscoliosis, who experienced progressive curve progression (from 41° to 158°)

Intraoperative Traction for Cephalomedullary Nailing in Amputation Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral fracture fixation in lower-limb amputees is challenging due to limited limb purchase, altered biomechanics, and sparse guidance. We describe an intraoperative skeletal-traction technique to facilitate cephalomedullary nailing (CMN). CASE REPORT: Two amputee patients with extracapsular proximal femur fractures underwent CMN. Under biplanar fluoroscopy, a 5-mm distal femoral traction pin was placed through the residual limb and secured to the traction boot to restore length, correct alignment, and permit controlled reduction. RESULTS: Patient 1 (65-year-old female; prior

Preventing traction suture skin indentation in oculofacial surgery.

In oculofacial surgery, traction sutures are often used to maintain tissue exposure, but they can cause temporary skin indentations or erythema, impacting patient satisfaction. This article presents a simple technique to mitigate these effects by repurposing the adhesive foam packaging from soft dissectors as a cushioning platform. The foam is applied to the patient's forehead, allowing the sutures to rest on it instead of directly on the skin, distributing pressure more evenly. This method effectively reduces skin marks, enhances postoperative aesthetics, is cost-effective, and seamlessly int

Severe Intraoperative Shock Related to Mesenteric Traction Syndrome.

Mesenteric traction syndrome is defined as arterial hypotension, facial flushing, and tachycardia related to mesenteric traction. We describe a case of mesenteric traction syndrome refractory to catecholamine and vasopressin infusions. The patient, who had Crohn disease, developed severe distributive shock after mesenteric traction while undergoing resection of an intestinal inflammatory mass, accompanied by facial flushing and unaltered readings for pulse oximetry, capnography, and bispectral index monitoring. The absence of tachycardia in this case was attributed to long-term use of timolol.

Attempted traction of impacted and ankylosed maxillary canines.

The aim of this article is to report the clinical orthodontic treatment of an adult patient with 2 impacted maxillary canines. Traction was applied to the impacted teeth; however, after 7 months, the teeth were found to be ankylosed and were extracted. The extraction spaces were closed by moving the posterior teeth mesially with mini-implant anchorage. The results were satisfactory, with the premolars in the functional position of the canines.

Local antibiotics: panacea for long term skeletal traction.

Long periods of skeletal traction are frequently needed in busy tertiary centres due to long waiting lists for surgery. A frequent complication is pin track infection, which leads to revision of pin insertion or switching over to skin traction. A prospective study was conducted on sixty patients with upper tibial pin insertion for various causes. Antibiotic (injection Cephazolin 0.5 g after sensitivity testing--250 mg on each side) was injected on thirty patients at the site of pin insertion and no antibiotic was injected in 30 controls. Only one stage one pin track infection was seen in the s
